About this project
Life happens fast. We don’t always have the luxury of a professional videographer or even a competent friend to capture it all. But that shouldn’t stop us.
Introducing MOTUS, the first SMART robot cameraman for your phone.
MOTUS intelligently follows your every move. It auto zooms and records. It even captures photos while recording video.
It’s easy to setup. It’s silent, fast, and silky smooth.
MOTUS is highly programmable to react to action happening in the scene. Automatically record a burst of photos when you jump. Stop and start recording when you stop and go. Take a picture whenever you approach the camera. And so much more!
Unlike optical tracking and GPS devices, MOTUS uses advanced ultra-wideband RF tracking for incredible precision indoors and outside.
MOTUS locates the subject wearing the durable, weather-proof TAG.
The TAG can be worn in your pocket, around your neck, or mounted to a helmet. The Anchor and Base Unit easily mount to a tripod, fence, tree or just about anywhere.
Smart technology in the Base Unit then lets MOTUS make rapid-fire decisions about when to pan, tilt, zoom, and start/stop filming.
The TAG is packed with three locating antennas and five sensors for displaying metrics like speed, g-force, orientation, etc.
You can use the TAG as a remote control for interviews, landscapes, etc.
Rotate your hand for natural control of pan and tilt. Use the TAG buttons to start & stop recording.
Record from multiple angles with two MOTUS's.
What makes MOTUS smart?
MOTUS doesn't just point the camera in your direction. It's a professional grade system for recording, training and coaching.
- Auto zoom – keeps you at the size you want in frame
- Auto pickup – returns to designated position if subject is out of range
- Perfect focus – keeps you in focus while tracking and zooming
- Silent motors – fast, brushless motors keep up with the action
- Silky smooth pan & tilt – jitter free filming
- Captures directly to your phone's video library – easy playback for review & sharing
- Captures photos & bursts while recording video
- Charges your phone
- Locates you 50x a second
- TAG contains advanced sensors for g-force, speed, and orientation
- Use TAG metrics as triggers – start/stop recording, capture photo bursts, enable slow motion, etc.
- Record video for hours, hands free
We greatly appreciate our backers and believe in going the extra mile. We're so confident that you'll love your MOTUS that we'll happily refund you if you're not 100% satisfied after you receive your MOTUS.
MOTUS is the same hardware regardless of your phone. The iPhone app will be available when your Kickstarter MOTUS ships. The Android app will be available at a later date.
The MOTUS app integrates at a low level with the phone's camera zoom and focus. Each model of Android needs to be individually coded and tested.
Take your training and social media videos to a new level!
Whether you're working on your game or just want to show off, MOTUS has you covered.
Metrics collected by the TAG sensors can be displayed over the MOTUS video in real-time or added afterwards for sharing on social media.
Metrics can be displayed in different styles or disabled altogether.
MOTUS's silky smooth zoom keeps you visible in the frame.
Adjust the desired frame size in the MOTUS app.
Framing position can also be adjusted with the TAG buttons.
MOTUS lets you use any app to stream live to your audience. Just keep the MOTUS app running in the background and live stream hands free!
University of San Francisco, Men's Tennis Head Coach reviews MOTUS as a training tool for his team and private tennis students.
"I've never been able to get video like this on my guys... the more video a player can watch, the better. Always."
Elijah Jennet reviews MOTUS for use in filming his parkour sessions.
Legendary skater Mike McGill, inventor of the McTwist, wants a MOTUS.
Martial arts with raw TAG sensor data shown on screen.
MOTUS works both indoors and outside with exceptional range and accuracy. It uses RF signals with advanced triangulation instead of GPS, allowing location speeds of 50x per second and accuracy 10x greater than GPS.
Ideal: 100ft, 30m
Max: 200ft, 66m
Location Accuracy: 10cm
Will not interfere with WIFI, Bluetooth or other RF devices.
MOTUS uses your phone's camera to record video and images. Most modes supported by your camera are also supported by the MOTUS app.

JON HORVATH,Founder & CEO
After more than a decade working on Wall Street, Jon traded in the virtual action of the stock market for the real-life thrills of his true passion: action sports photography. Frustrated with the existing solutions, Jon combined his engineering skills with his business acumen—he holds an MBA from Kellogg—and MOTUS was created. Born in Northern Sweden, Jon practically grew up on skis and has since added a host of other sports to his repertoire. Fond of pushing his own limits, Jon has even been known to resort to public displays of karaoke when good snow, surf, or biking terrain can't be found.
ARNAUD GLATRON, Advisor
Arnaud is an experienced free diver who loves being underwater, though he has a real gift for keeping tech-centric startups on solid ground. He’s a Creative Executive who has spent the past two decades bringing a host of cutting-edge products to market. Arnaud excels at shepherding products through every stage of development, from the boardroom table to the drawing table and beyond. As an intuitive thinker who always backs up instinct with data, he knows MOTUS is much more than a robotic cameraman. It’s a revolutionary new way to capture those epic moments you just can't miss.
CHIO SAEPHAN, Embedded Systems Engineer
As MOTUS’s jack-of-all-trades engineering genius, Chio writes the code that controls MOTUS and integrates new hardware components. Chio has degrees in both electrical engineering and mathematics, but claims pulling a 28 pound Chinook salmon from the Sacramento River is actually the hardest thing he’s ever done.
SUBRAT NAYAK, Power Systems Engineer
Since he’s always been a mover and a shaker in his own right, it makes sense that Subrat is the man behind the circuits and software powering MOTUS. He holds dual master’s degrees in mechanical and electrical engineering, and has successfully made a wide range of things move—from humanoid robots to submarines and drones. But Subrat doesn’t limit his fascination with movement to tech. He’s trained as a counsellor and has been known to dance with complete abandon on the Burning Man playa.
PAUL PAN, iPhone App Developer
As an adventurous world traveler, Paul had a bad brush with bird flu in Beijing, but that didn’t dampen his wanderlust. When this well-rounded and creative engineer isn’t perfecting the software behind the MOTUS app, you might find him eating ramen in Japan, drinking beer in Munich, or hanging out with gorillas in Rwanda. We can’t wait to see Paul put MOTUS to use in the wild. (Though we’re defining “wild” quite loosely here. No hippos and orangutans required.)
Risks and challenges
As with all Kickstarter projects, some risks are inherent to the process so please be sure to read the Kickstarter guideline. To mitigate manufacturing risk we have been working on Design For Manufacturing with a local contract manufacturer for over a year now. This contract manufacturer also has manufacturing operations in China and offices in Taiwan which is where the worlds largest electronics manufacturing hubs are located.
Most of the integrated circuits, discrete components and other parts that we have designed into MOTUS have low lead times and are easy to obtain for assembly. However, we can't forecast unforeseen disruptions to the supply chain which can cause temporary shortages of components.
We selected estimated shipping times that are conservative. Most importantly, we have created a strong community around MOTUS and will be completely transparent in our progress and challenges. Join us on the journey!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
