About this project

Mosaics for Heroes

My Project: Create poster size picture Mosaics honoring our fallen soldiers.

I have been creating picture mosaics for my family and friends for years and I have decided to give something back to the families of our fallen soldiers.  The mosaics I make are a lasting tribute and remembrance of the person they represent.

My goal is to identify some of the families of fallen soldiers and simply offer them a free picture mosaic of their loved one. If the family agrees, I will produce a poster sized (2' by 3') mosaic, have it framed and shipped to the family. The mosaic will also be accompanied by a Sponsor Sheet listing the names of people who have invested in my project.

I will attempt to reach out to as many of the families as I can but this effort is going to be limited to my time constraints because I will be doing this on my own.  The production of a mosaic usually takes 2-3 days.

The family will be asked to provide a head shot of their loved one and they can also provide additional photos that will be incorporated into the mosaic.

Risks and challenges

The main challenge in building a mosaic is collecting enough pictures from the family. The quality of the final mosaic is directly related to the quantity and diversity of the individual photos that are used to make it. For this reason, I have built a collection of alternate photos which can used to supplement.

The next challenge is finding and contacting the families of a fallen soldier. I have found some websites that provide a list of fallen soldiers but they don't give contact information which I understand, so I will have to work on this.

The next challenge will be selecting the computer system and peripherals for a production environment. The monies raised from this project are needed for the following items:

1. Desktop computer needed to build and store the Mosaics;
2. Large format printer needed for printing the Mosaics;
3. Photo grade paper and ink supplies;
4. Purchase of frames for Mosaics;
5. Purchase of Domain and website hosting;
6. Shipping cost of Mosaics to families.

I started a free website subscription on wix.com but it's just a start. The URL is: http://cazman7.wix.com/mosaicsforheroes

Wish me luck!
