"I love comics, but I can't get my kids/ friends/ romantic partner to read them with me.  I wish there were a comic that appealed to people who aren't into fist fights and eye lasers...."

Here's your chance! Naomi Yamata is an 80-something year old Japanese-American who plays hooky from her elderly-cruise vacation plans, in favor of traveling around the world, looking for a dragon.

Every world culture has a dragon story, and she goes to darn near every corner of the world looking for one!  From Nepal to Norway, Africa to Japan, her adventures land her in colorful and vividly drawn spots around the globe.

What happens if--sorry, when--she finds the dragon?  What if the dragon find her?

"Naomi and the Dragon" is a story for kids of all ages written by the light mind of Stephanie Bryant and drawn by quirky hand of Toby Strauss. The story follows the style of a Miyazaki film (like "Spirited Away"), and the art is drawn in a folksy, pen and watercolor (with a hint of chibi) stype.

The Project

We started Naomi and the Dragon as a 24-Hour Comic Book., which is a challenge to write and draw a 24-page comic book in 24 hours.

Although we didn't finish before the 24 hours were up, we feel we had a great little script to work with, and we'd especially like to add a few pages and give it more time and attention. When finished, Naomi and the Dragon will be around 30 pages long.

The comic will be full color. The medium is ink, watercolor pencils, and a little bit of computer manipulation, as shown in an early mock-up of our scene of heroine in Africa:

Naomi looks for dragons everywhere!
Naomi looks for dragons everywhere!

The comic is 100% scripted, and about 50% drawn in black and white. We had a personal goal of finishing the project this year, and figured "why not share it?"  There are costs associated with publishing a comic, and this Kickstarter is our way of sharing Naomi and the Dragon with people like you!

Rewards

We kept the rewards very simple for this project, so we can focus on delivering a great comic book to you.

For $5, you get a digital version of the comic book in DRM-free PDF and CDR (Comixology) formats.

For $25, a signed and numbered limited edition print copy of the comic book, plus the digital formats. You also get a surprise bonus gift (could be a game, a patch, a dice bag, a song, a pair of slippers-- who knows?!?) This reward is limited to 100 backers, as part of our participation in the Kickstarter Make 100 initiative.

No Other Print Copies

After the Kickstarter project is fulfilled, we will not be offering any more print copies of the comic book. The 100-copy limited edition tier is the only way to get a print copy of this comic book.

Part of the Make 100 Initiative

Naomi and the Dragon is part of he "Make 100" Initiative at Kickstarter. Make 100 projects feature limited-run rewards for the first 100 backers at a premium tier. In this case, the print copy reward is our premium reward tier.

No Stretch Goals?

We aren't doing stretch goals for this project. We don't think it really needs them, and we've both been burnt by "stretch goal failure" delaying fulfillment.

We are instead focusing on a simple, straightforward "help us make this come true!" goal. This is a fun little upbeat project, and we would love to have you come along for the ride!

Who We Are

We are a pair of game designers, writers, artists, musicians, and best friends from Las Vegas, Nevada. We have collaborated in the past, writing live action and tabletop role playing games. This is not our first project together, but it is our first comic book.

Stephanie is an experienced writer who wrote and published Handknit Heroes, a comic book for knitters, and is currently finishing Threadbare, a role-playing game about broken toys in a post-apocalyptic world.

Toby is an artsy kind of geek.  He writes, creates music, makes gadgets, and draws.  His formal background is linguistics, classical music, and philosophy.

Risks and challenges

The risks and challenges for completing this project are few and far between--unless paper or ink becomes hard to come by, the only risk is people. And there are only two of us!

We are both in the middle of doing some personal financial change that could delay, but not imperil, the project. If someone is injured or ill, that would delay the project.

We might have a falling out. It happens with creative people all the time. While it seems unlikely due to our successful collaborations in the past, it happens and it would be negligent not to say as much.

Other contingencies . . . gosh, unless postage costs double or they start taxing PDFs, there really is no reason this shouldn't complete on time.
