Frank Herbert's Cease Fire is a short student film currently in production, adapted faithfully from the story by the same name written by Frank Herbert, world-renown author of the Dune series, in the late 1950's. Shot on location in and around Denver, Colorado, by students in the University of Colorado at Denver film program, this is a throwback to the style of film that director Jacob Collins grew up on, and an homage to Frank Herbert and the influence of his works.

The story itself tells the tale of Corporal Larry Hulser, a man drafted into a war for resources, stuck on watch duty in the arctic. While under attack, Hulser discovers a new science, a theory distilled from technology and techniques that are necessary to survive in a war-ravaged future, but what Hulser doesn't know is that the new weapon he creates will change the game of war forever...

The story is ambiguous, with the both the enemy and the winning weapon never truly identified, but it makes a clear anti-war statement, without trivializing our basic need for security and safety - in other words, it asks that we think about a better way to achieve harmony, while still recognizing us for who we are.

This is a tough topic to get across in a short story, but Frank does it, and we (many hardworking students, actors, and crew), are trying to bring this topic to light, especially given the political climate in today's world.

What we're trying to do now, though, is get up enough money to pay for the final scene, and take care of production costs (see FAQ below) - this means accommodations for a large crew, equipment rental, gas, food, shelter, etc, all for two days of work, for what is essentially a sci-fi period piece - this is a huge challenge for student filmmakers, but  it is all done in the name of both education and love of the craft, as there is no profit to be made from this film, and no distribution.

This film is unique in a lot of ways outside of the story and the effort put into it - the script is almost completely verbatim to the original short story, the film showcases the beauty of the mountains in the Front Range, with shooting taking place outdoors in both Dillon and Nederland (if you've skied or kiteboarded in Colorado, then you've been to or through at least one of these places), everything regarding production has been done in Colorado by UC Denver students or graduates, and it is officially authorized by the most prestigious literary estate in science fiction today.

Please, have a look at the pledge prizes - we have a lot of great stuff going out, and any pledge you make goes to a truly great cause, as well as a great film!
