STRETCH GOAL UPDATE!

About Indomptable (Wild)

You can tame wolves, but they will still be wolves."

Set in the 1930s, "Indomptable" (French: untameable; English title: Wild) follows Ida, a young French Canadian girl who, while spending the summer with her relatives in English-speaking Ontario, discovers a supernatural entity living in their cornfield. After deciding to befriend the entity, they form a strong relationship. But, while the entity appears to be kind to Ida, it has the potential to be devastating to others.

The film will contain both English and French dialogue (with English subtitles), reflecting Ida's challenges as a French-speaking girl in an English environment.

Why Should I Contribute?

I am an 18-year-old award-winning director and cinematographer. My short films have screened at over 100 international film festivals and won over 35 awards.

Morgana shooting a film in Toronto (March 2017)

After only three months in the festival circuit, my latest narrative music video “Atlas World” has won six awards including Best Director and Best Film from the young filmmaker division of TIFF (Toronto International Film Festival), and won Best Music Video at the Bellingham Music Film Festival and NFFTY in Seattle (one of the world’s largest festivals for emerging filmmakers).

In 2016 my short film “Ellie” (which was funded through Kickstarter) won 14 awards including Best Fiction Film from TIFF, and I was awarded Best Emerging Female Filmmaker by NFFTY (Seattle) in 2014.

Beautiful films made from incredibly modest budgets.

My previous films have demonstrated my ability to create successful short films with compelling stories and rich visuals, from incredibly modest budgets.

The Kickstarter for my award-winning short film "Ellie" raised half of that film's $10,000 budget. My most recent narrative music video "Atlas World" was made for only $6,000, privately financed.

For Indomptable, I have personally put $4,800 into boot-strapping the production. And I'm incredibly fortunate to have such a creative and experienced team of professionals who have volunteered their time and expertise, because they believe in the film. But, to do great creative and professional work, the crew must be well fed and cared for; and, they must have access to the right equipment, such as lighting kits, and sound gear.

As a working cinematographer and colorist, I have all of my own camera equipment (including a Canon C300 Mark II cinema camera, lenses, and rigging). And the post-production costs for this film are very low, as I will perform the post-production work myself, except for sound – including editing and colour-grading – as I have for my previous successful films.

Practical Visual Effects, not CGI

I create my worlds practically, through set building, makeup, and prosthetics, rather than visual effects through the use of green-screen and CGI.

The "Finger Queen" from Atlas World. A character wearing a head-piece and handmade dress adorned with over 300 unique finger prosthetics
The "Finger Queen" from Atlas World. A character wearing a head-piece and handmade dress adorned with over 300 unique finger prosthetics

I'm a proponent of the notion that CGI is best used to remove things from the frame, like rigging, and that practical effects should be used wherever possible. But, building worlds out of practical effects takes time, materials, and ultimately money.

For example, one of the main aspects of the film is the other-world of the supernatural entity. It’s both a place of stark darkness, and a void punctuated with colours and lights extending as far as the eye can see. Inspired by Yayoi Kusama’s infinity rooms, this other-world must be built, meaning we need funds for location space, materials, fiber-optic lights, and more.

With your help, we can make this film, and it will be amazing!

Telling the Story & Visual Inspiration

Storytelling Through the Eyes of a Child

In Tomas Alfredson's "Let The Right One In" (2008), the lead characters Oskar and Eli carry the film with their incredibly heartfelt performance. In Luc Besson's "Léon: The Professional", a 12 year old Natalie Portman moves us in a way we hadn't seen before.

These unique and natural performances from these films' child actors adds authenticity and emotion to the storytelling. This is the approach that I've taken successfully in my past films, and it's the approach I'm taking with Indomptable.

Visual Style

Indomptable is a unique story supported by intense visuals.

Hands down, I love visual storytelling. As a cinematographer, visual artist, and someone who is naturally attracted to strong images, I found my strength in telling stories through visuals. I put an immense amount of preparation and thought into designing and planning my visuals, along with supporting my characters with an emphasis on world building.

Indomptable is a story set in two worlds: a 1930s farm, and the realm of a supernatural entity; and, Indomptable will artfully shift from the look of a period piece for Ida's world, to the type of bold visuals seen in Natasha Braier’s “The Neon Demon” cinematography for the entity's realm.

Braier's use of dark shadows, strategic and stylized lighting, and an intense colour palette, was perfect for "The Neon Demon" and inspired me to create a strong visual style for the home of Ida's supernatural entity.

Location

A beautiful 1904 farmhouse and a custom-planted cornfield.

Indomptable will be shot at an incredible location south of Ottawa, inside a farmhouse over a hundred years old alongside a cornfield planted just for the production.

Location Manager Paola Della Malva describes the location beautifully:

"After driving up the long, arched, tree-lined driveway of this farmhouse built in 1904, I was greeted at the end with a vista of what seems like endless farm fields surrounding the property. Nestled in the village of Winchester, Ontario, this impressive home still has its original architecture, mouldings and woodwork. Once inside, I felt transported back in time. Most likely because in its 113 year history, it has belonged to only two families. We're thrilled that this is the home for Indomptable! It's a truly stunning location that has the potential to become its own character in this film."

We are incredibly fortunate that the owners of the property are working with us to plant the corn field, volunteering their time and equipment to start planting now so that our swaying corn stalks will be ready for shooting in August.

Who is the Cast?

I'm so happy to have Nève Guénette playing the role of Ida. Last summer, after casting her for the lead in my narrative music video "Atlas World", I did a test shoot with Nève for Indomptable at a local corn field, planning to use the footage for this Kickstarter pitch video. Nève's performance in "Atlas World" (at the age of 10!) was amazing, and I knew that I wanted her to play Ida.

Paola is a graduate of the Television Broadcasting Program from Algonquin College. She is an award-winning, short documentary filmmaker, and has worked in many facets of production for live television, and animation programs. Born and raised in Ottawa, she continues to call the nation's capital home.

What if the Kickstarter isn't Successful?

If we don't meet our funding goal and the Kickstarter campaign isn't successful, this film will not get made. While I have already put $4,800 into starting up this production, and we have commitments from the location owners, a crew, and the cast is being finalized, if we don't make our funding goal that initial $4,800 investment will be lost and the project will be dead.

The Budget

Indomptable will require a 10 day shoot this August, split between the two worlds of the story.

The total minimum budget to make Indomptable is $12,300 CAD. After my personal investment of $4,800, I need to raise $7,500 through Kickstarter, for:

  • The ambitious set build for the very cool entity's other-world.
  • Lighting and grip equipment rentals.
  • Final sound mixing.
  • Wardrobe and props.
  • Food service for cast and crew.

While $7,500 will get this film made, there is only the barest minimum of contingency built into the budget. There is no room for extras unless we exceed the $7,500 goal.

Once this project is funded, there will be opportunity to make Indomptable even better through stretch goals, and every additional backer contribution will have a direct impact on what you will see in the final film.

Risks and challenges

The most common risk to film projects is inadequate planning and time management. However, I've demonstrated with my previous projects an ability to breakdown a screenplay and plan my shoot days to get the footage I need in the time available. Plus, on this project I will have additional support from an experienced 1st AD and crew. And it is worth noting that my previous Kickstarter for "Ellie" was a success, and resulted in an award winning film.

Indomptable also has risks associated with many scenes being shot outside around the farmhouse or in the cornfield, which could be impacted by weather conditions. While I'll ensure that we don't shoot in unsafe weather conditions, a rainy day won't necessarily delay the shooting schedule. My newest narrative music video "Atlas World" was shot on cold rainy October days, and I have the proper equipment to shoot in wet conditions and portable shelters for cast and crew.
