About

HUMAN PEACE SIGN with Flower Power 2011

1500 People standing in the shape of a Peace Sign will open 1500 FLOWERS painted on 1500 Umbrellas

We are looking for 1500 people to pledge $5

This art event will only happen if it is crowd-funded!!!!!

WHEN -  May 1st 2011 @ MayDay Festival

WHERE - New Haven Green, CT

WANTED: 1500 HUMANS

Building on the awesome potential of "PEOPLE POWER" this participatory work of public art serves as a flashback, a reminder of our American roots in revolutionary activism. The 2011 Peace Sign will add “FLOWER POWER!” People will open umbrellas painted like large flowers. Aerial photography and video by airplane and from surrounding buildings will document this human work of public art.

As the Peace Sign grows and "blooms" it will inspire those watching and participating. Yes, I hope that includes you, reader. Your support will take this project from a seed to a bouquet, that you can proudly display with rewards offered here at Kickstarter. You too can BECOME a PART of HUMAN ART! This project is a sequel to the Human Peace Sign I organized in 2007 shown in the video. I will use this experience to enhance the visual impact, increase participation and add choreography to this year’s orchestration of humans in the name of PEACE and ART and the amazing results of collective action and individual participation.

Making this project happen through crowd funding creates a whole new layer of public participation. So in the words of Eldridge Cleaver "RIGHT ON" or his more known quotation- "You are either part of the solution, or part of the problem." In honor of our American hipster history your opportunity to be part of our solution will end on April 20th, that's 4-20  .:-)

We hope to reach $5000 before 4-20, ( 4-20 is 10 days before the event)  I would like to commit to a crew, suppliers and, and, and. . .

Your participation will pay for;

  • aerial photography and plane service
  • 20 member crew in buildings, in the air and on the ground
  • walkie talkies
  • 1500 UMBRELLAS!!!!!!!
  • 10-20 patio umbrellas,
  • running, supplying a 2 week workshops for art students in New Haven to paint 500 umbrellas, they will receive 50% of the sale of their Umbrella if the $10,000 goal is met.
  • insurance
  • musician/MC on stage (essential to engage humans to happily stand in one place for 30+ minutes)
  • PEACE CREW t-shirts for crew and rewards
  • printing postcards
  • reproductions
  • distribution
  • pre-event planning
  • recruiting 1500 humans to fill the peace sign so we don't end up with a lop-sided Mercedes logo.

Crowdfunding is a natural fit for this project. Backers, as with film industry, are the producers, so your support will be recognized as such on printed and virtual media. Peace is made from human participation, the more humans, the better!

We can spread seeds of peace by creating and planting opportunity, but like a democracy, peace needs to be cultivated with individual and collective intent and action. This year's Human Peace Sign is dedicated to the people of Egypt.

Funding GOALS

Bare minimum - $5000 will create 500 flower umbrellas for a Human Peace Sign. Still much bigger and brighter than the 2007 Human Peace Sign I conducted.

$10,000 - I will create 1500 umbrellas for a giant Human Peace Sign,  crew and I have a pizza party AND we get to buy a few groceries and some gas.

Oh so happy - $15,000 and up - we have a pizza party plus I get more groceries and can restock my paint supply. The 20 member ground crew will get $100 for their 2 hours of time = $2,000, everyone standing in the Peace Sign gets a 8x10 print of the aerial image.

If this project gets funded beyond the bare minimum need of $10000, funds will first go to making sure the crew is respectfully compensated and all participating humans get a reproduction of the final image.

Secondly, I will edit raw footage into a short but nice documentary of this human art project and include, comments from: participants, audience, backers (no corp. funding). Production scenes from the creation of painted umbrellas by myself and students, on-ground and above ground orchestration (when people open/ close umbrellas on cue, move and such), As well as expanding on the 1500 Human Video presented here.

Thirdly, all pledges will get two different postcard areal shots(close and wide angle with cityscape) of the peace sign.  I will create an exhibition for display that will increase participation to grow the Human Peace Sign annually at different locations. The 2007 project was well received and participants are geared up for a bigger-better project for 2011. Each year we will change the visual enhancement, this year - flowers, next year -mirrors for example. Creating a new effect with the same intent to make Peace through Human Art.

YOU CAN HELP MAKE THIS HAPPEN!

The Peace Sign is created at the May Day Festival - on the New Haven Green, learn more about the festival at www.maydaynewhaven.org IF YOU ARE IN New Haven, come to the Green by 3pm to stand in this year's Human Peace Sign, bring a friend - there is live music all day!

RAIN OR SHINE but if there are torrential downpours and low clouds the event will be June 19th, 2011. IT WILL HAPPEN

ARTISTIC STATEMENT

I create spectacle projects that have multi-layered opportunity for public impact and participation.  My concept usually comes from a dream, an actual dream I have at night. I wake up thinking, often aloud , “You have got to be kidding me!”, as if some of these ideas come from another source.

Next comes creative problem solving to make it happen. It is a challenge I welcome. What materials will work? How will it come to fruition? How do I keep it environmentally friendly? How can I engage and involve people in a meaningful way? How do I fund it?

I work and think backwards, starting from the visual of the future completed project and look back at how it is made.

Environmentally sound project construction . . .

. . .can be implemented throughout a project, limiting the amount of unnecessary waist, electricity, water (painting projects often need water) . Materials: I spend time to explore new ways to re-purpose existing material. My recent projects repurposed billboard advertisements. I think big but I am very committed to not leaving a big footprint. For the 2011 Peace sign  UPDATE : I have not found many good umbrellas in thrift shops and craiglist, I will need to purchase most of them. After they are used for this project, they will be donated to social service orgs. senior centers ect.to decorate and uplift their environment as art, or they can use them. They will also be to fund this project and sent to backers. They will not end up in a dump,

USING PUBLIC SPACE FOR PUBLIC GOOD

Cristo could do more to make his projects environmentally friendly. If you or Jean Claude are reading this, and want some advise on your next project, click on the “back this project” button. Constructing the “Gates” from thousands of yards of new petroleum-based fabric only to shred it for carpet material?. You could use repurposed material and instead of shredding it, sell squares of the project, raising millions of dollars for a good cause. This would take more effort than shredding, but millions of people would have purchased a square for $10+. You could feed a small country instead of just covering it. I can coordinate that for you. Artists have a responsibility to the world, almost more so. Envisioning what can be drives and supports us.

ART and PEACE

The act of making art can be exhilarating but it has an underlying essence of peace. There is a sense of personal contentment gained from focused involvment in the creative process. The world, all the clutter and clatter of life disappears, lost into the fluidity of the paint, coolness of the clay, the beauty of an image through a lens. There, in these moments, at one with our most authentic experience of self, is unmistakable peace.

“For many years, both through the Arts Council and after I became a City Alderman, I have had the privilege of working with JoAnn Moran, one of Connecticut’s most outstanding and accomplished community artists. Great community artists are a very rare breed. They are people whose artistic work is of the highest quality but their ability to engage children, adults, elderly and disabled people in the participating in and the making of art is tremendously exciting to see. I have watched JoAnn work with the most uninterested and often hostile people and within five minutes have them enthusiastically engaged in making their own work of art and feeling delighted and proud of their achievement.” - Francis”Bitsie”Clark

I hope you were inspired by this project.

Thank you, Shanti, Peace, JoAnn Moran
