About this project
What we are doing:
Flying Moose Pictures has been selected to produce a short film from the award-winning play Ecce Homo for the First Annual PlayGround Film Festival.
Ecce Homo is the story of a vaudeville couple as they face the end of their stage careers brought on by moving pictures. It’s a period piece with a contemporary theme; how do we react to relentless technological change that threatens our livelihoods and our relationships?
PlayGround, the leading developer of short plays in the Bay Area, has staged more than 600 original ten-minute plays and awarded dozens of commissions for full-length works. In fact, Ecce Homo was awarded a commission for development into a full-length play that will have a staged reading at the same festival in May.
We formed Flying Moose Pictures twelve years ago to tell stories through film. Our purpose was not just to a create a film production company, but to collaborate with San Francisco's vast community of storytellers – theater artists, dancers, musicians, performers and filmmakers.
Why we need your money
PlayGround granted us $1,500 for the project and we’re contributing much, much more from our own funds. This Kickstarter campaign is only a part of the overall cost of the production. Our total budget could be as high as $10k to $16k, depending on our shooting location and how we pay our crew. We are, of course, contributing a whole lot of our own labor! We’re also asking for help from the same production team that we have worked with for many years to make corporate CEOs look, sound and perform like Captains of Industry.
But there is one major expense that we can’t tackle alone: to rent the Paramount Theatre in Oakland. The Paramount is a national historic landmark, a palace of Art Deco design, and the perfect location to set our film about two vaudeville players. We are still negotiating to shoot at the Paramount and, even a successful Kickstarter campaign will not guarantee that we can shoot there, but without Kickstarter funds, we are certain we cannot afford to.
Will your contribution change the planet?
You bet! Your cash will support our production and the very first PlayGround Film Festival, the beginning of a powerful movement that will leverage hundreds of stories and characters into films that can be shared by a global audience.
The San Francisco Bay Area has always been home to fabulous artists and performers. But now, the Internet has brought us new models of distribution. Advancing technology has given us feature filmmaking quality gear at affordable prices. Filmmaking is poised to immensely expand the kind of stories that can be told. There will always be a place for Hollywood blockbusters, but the Hollywood monopoly on financing, production and distribution is being replaced by opportunities for artists worldwide.
This is one of those opportunities.
Check out the great rewards we’re offering in return for your moolah.
What if we exceed our goal?
That'd be great! We'd be able to make a better film!
The $5,000 Kickstarter goal was our best guess at what we could comfortably ask our friends, families and colleagues to contribute.
Once a Kickstarter campaign is launched, the rules are that the goal cannot be changed.
But $5,000 is far from the total cost of producing Ecce Homo. Our Kickstarter goal is the minimum to allow us, with the addition of our own funds and labor, to rent the Paramount Theatre for the shoot and tell our story in the most compelling way.
A larger budget will allow us to spend more time on location and to create a more compelling film, without rushing our setups, lighting, and performances of our cast.
So yes, we're hoping we exceed our goal, and thanks to the generosity of our contributors, it looks possible that we will!
