"Whoever fights monsters should see to it that in the process he does not become a monster. And if you gaze long enough into an abyss, the abyss will gaze back into you."
- Friedrich Nietzsche
I designed Monster Melee to be a simple game. There's no epic story. No plot twists. There are no heroes. No dice or gameboard needed. It's quick to learn and can be played anywhere, anytime you have 15-30 minutes to waste. All you need is a flat surface and 2-4 players (Classic Melee) or 2 vs 2 (Tag Team Terror).
The object of the game is easy: have a higher Power Level than your opponent to win the gold you bet that round. Earn enough gold, and you win the game.
In the game you'll encounter two types of cards:
MONSTER CARDS - Monster cards can be used to fight in a Melee. or used in a bet to win their gold value.
FIX CARDS - Fix cards are used to secretly modify the current Melee in some way.
Strategies in this game are similar to a game like poker. Once you're dealt your hand, you have to evaluate the cards you have to work with. Do I have good cards? How good? How likely am I to beat whatever I have to fight? What order should I bet my cards in? Should I bet conservatively, or go all in? If my cards aren't any good, how do I cut my losses? The answers to these questions will help you play more effectively and ultimately let you win more.

The standard game includes:
- 40 unique Monster cards
- 20 unique Fix cards
- 1 full color instruction sheet (folded)
- 1 full color cardboard tuckbox
All cards are poker sized (2.5" x 3.5") and printed on 300 gsm white core stock with a linen finish. The instruction sheet features rules for Classic Melee (2-4 players) and Tag Team Terror (2 vs 2).
$7000 - Collectable metal tins for everyone!
All decks will now feature a sturdier, full color metal tin for your deck instead of the cardboard tuckbox! Golly gee!
Game Funded + 300 Games Sold - Monster Melee Expansion!
If I see enough interest in the game, I will begin development on the first Monster Melee expansion, available at a later date either on Amazon, or possibly as another Kickstarter project. They will be designed to let an additional 2 players join in a Classic Melee, per expansion. Each expansion used would also allow an additional team for Tag Team Terror.
It's also possible to combine and play 2 expansions together without need of the standard game.
Each expansion will include 20 new Monster Cards and 10 new Fix cards.
Expansion Selections -
Creepy Cryptids - Creatures of myth and legend like Bigfoot, Mothman, The Rake...
Silver Screen Spooks - Classic monsters like Nosferatu, Mr. Hyde, Dr. Caligari...
Yokai Explosion - Spirits of Japanese folklore like Kappa, Dorotabo, Tsuchigumo...
Lovecraft Eternal - The strange beings from the writings of H.P. Lovecraft like Cthulhu, Shoggoths, Night Gaunts...
Robot Roll Call - An invasion of menacing, mechanized monsters for you to play with!
Each expansion will be developed depending on how many votes it receives (via the Expansion Vote Reward.)
Game Funded + 500 Games Sold - 2 Expansions Developed!
Game Funded + 600 Games Sold - 3 Expansions Developed!
Game Funded + 700 Games Sold - 4 Expansions Developed!
Game Funded + 1000 Games Sold - ALL Expansions Developed!
So the bad news is that teleportation technology isn't commercially available yet, and the game has to be delivered in the mail by a person, which costs money. The good news is that all money collected for shipping goes toward the funding goal, getting Monster Melee that much closer to being a real, actual game.
Below are the charges for shipping:
USA - $6
Canada - $21
Europe / Asia / South America / Australia & New Zealand - $27
I'm using USPS Flat Rate shipping as a pricing guide. This will allow me to ship any extras (shirts, stickers, pins...) with no extra cost.
Delivery in July is a rough estimate. Depending on how printing and shipping goes, I'll update everyone with a more accurate time once Monster Melee is fully funded.
My love affair with monsters, creeps, oddities, weirdies, and the bizarre started when I was 3, rewinding the cantina scene in Star Wars over and over. From there, I moved on to The "Real" Ghostbusters cartoon, Ninja Turtles, the Swamp Thing cartoon, Spawn, Ren & Stimpy, Rocko's Modern Life...I'll spare you the full list.
I learned a bit about vector illustration and in 2004 I started Distant Screaming, and ran it 3 times a week for 2 years, showcasing, more than anything, my sense of humor and design style.
I had been toying with an idea for a card game for some time before I saw the documentary Kickstarted. Up until then, I really hadn't ever considered that my idea might become a real, actual thing that people could play and enjoy. But after seeing it, I knew I had to try.
Monster Melee is something I've been wanting to do for a long time now, working on it whenever I can, playtesting it, revising it, and then revising again. My campaign is a simple one, but an important one to me and my family.
To each and every one of my backers, I want to say thank you. Thank you for supporting my dream. Thank you for helping my family. Thank you for believing in me.
I absolutely couldn't have done any of this without my beautiful girlfriend Angela, my little daughter Maggie, and my friends and family.
Monster Melee was designed and illustrated by me.
Risks and challenges
The risks I see ahead are minimal. All artwork for the game is completed.
The game has gone through several versions. Playtesting has revealed a few bugs, and they've all been squished.
I've chosen to work with AdMagic to put Monster Melee into print. Amazon is my ultimate goal as far as a marketplace to sell the game, so I'll be using them as a fulfillment service, as well as USPS in some situations, once the game is funded. I've already walked through it with people that have had successful Kickstarters and I'm confident that the process will go smoothly.
Aside from all that...trucks explode, airplanes explode, trains explode, print facilities explode. Pretty much everything can and will explode. And while that may hinder producing the game, we must accept the exploding of things to be part of the beauty that is life.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
