The Abominable Dock Lamp.
The Abominable Dock Lamp is a series of lamps that are made completely by hand in California and out of 90%-100% reclaimed wood, recycled wine bottles, and salvaged wiring.
The Series is designed to compliment or accent any space from desktops to nightstands while providing the ability to charge or power several electronic devices at the same time and eliminate the need to fish for charging cables and outlets that are hard to get to.
The idea was to design a beautiful lamp that would help us clean up our surfaces and free them from items that often were just taking up valuable surface real estate.
We needed to have a lamp for every possible application if we wanted to be flexible and a complete line was born from that requirement.
The side table models had to be tall and perfect for low rise surfaces like nightstands where lamps are usually placed on both sides of a piece of furniture.
And so came the design of a height specific model that would be perfectly sized and double sided for that purpose.
Because lamps naturally exist on surfaces where our devices are usually set to charge, the decision was simple. We just needed to make sure we nailed it.
It was equally important for us to design a lamp that allowed us to replace the bulbs. Because we wanted to implement LED technology to our desktop model we had to find bulbs that worked, and gave us the correct amount of lighting needed for a working surface lamp.
The bulbs on the Sunset are wedge style T10 bulbs that are easily removable and sit in to a recessed socket within each screen.
The LED’s achieve an intimate vibe and apply a consistent spray of light to your surface while keeping light from blasting the area around the screen.
Why wood? As a woodworking shop we create a lot of waste that in our case is set aside for rainy day projects. This lamp had to be made of that waste. One of our core beliefs is that we can create beautiful and functional things without creating an even greater impact on our environment. Wood is not only a naturally sustainable resource, it is truly biodegradable, the mentality of irresponsible forestation of the previous centuries are in the past and we can now find responsible FSC certified suppliers that follow strict reforestation guidelines. We also have access to good re-usable lumber that has already served one purpose and can be processed and applied to serve another. We love the outdoors, we love our planet, and we want to respect it.
We started out by identifying the correct power supply to use for the amount of power we were going to need per application. And although we had considered making our own, we found that what we needed already existed over the counter in most hardware stores so we moved on to creating a base that would work with a 2 USB/3 prong connector outlet.
Next we had to figure out how we were going to make sure we had the flexibility we needed for any past and future technology we may want to use the dock feature for, and so we developed a dock block which is easily removable and replaceable that is held down with 4 rare earth magnets.
This allowed us to have the flexibility we needed as any future needs can be met by making minor adjustments to the block. Currently, we have one block that works with every phone and tablet on the market and one block made exclusively for Apple’s 30-pin connector (Iphone 1-4S and Ipad 1-2).
Everything that is wood is hand made, from the laminated base to the glass rings.
Using templates and routers we shape the bases and arms to their desired end shape and move them on to the prepping station to be bored for wiring. Our Kumu and Sunset models require a routed groove along the back of the body to allow for wiring, the groove is then covered with a matching strip that is bent in to place using a whole lot of clamps.
Where we're at.
The lamps you see in the video are the first finished and fully functional prototypes. We have already completed a small production run to perform time studies for each operation and develop a realistic and efficient manufacturing plan for mass quantities.
We are currently a small shop with 2 router stations and no CNC routers. In order to mass produce a product like this and do it all in house we will need to make significant infrastructure investments in tooling that without your help would be to risky and overwhelming for us. Our plan is to use our emergency funds to start our expansion as soon as we meet our minimum funding goal. We have the room, we just need the budget. Setting up the correct production line will take 1 week. After that we are good to start our Kickstarter exclusive production runs, first a limited run to train staff and fine tune our workflow. Then a more serious full production run.
We have also started talking with box designers and suppliers at a local level and have received delivery windows that are well within our initial shipping plan. Electronic component suppliers have also been contacted and the parts we need are readily accessible in mass quantities from a variety of reliable sources.
Thank you so much for reading our story.
What's included with your lamp.
• Cable and Dock Block (Tell us which device you will be docking so we can include the correct cable and dock block. Currently, we have one block that works with every phone and tablet on the market and one block made exclusively for Apple’s 30-pin connector: Iphone 1-4S and Ipad 1-2).
• Sunset model only: 3 wedge T10 light bulbs
• Foyer, Lomi and Kumu, light bulbs not included.
Risks and challenges
This is why we need your help.
With over 16 years experience in manufacturing and construction we are used to planning for contingencies and addressing problems and delays that are a natural part of any production line.
Because the lamps where designed using components that are already mass produced, bulk orders of all of the electronic components are something that companies that supply them stock. We have already received conservative deadlines and the diverse market that supplies them makes us very confident that the components will be on time.
The most challenging part of making the ADLS is the manufacturing of the actual body, base and screens and with your help we can purchase the equipment necessary to streamline the process and manufacture mass quantities without sacrificing, love, quality, performance, and functionality which are our core principals.
We have performed small production runs and time studies for each operation in order to develop a realistic goal for delivering the promised quantities for this campaign and we are committed to doing so. That said there is always risks and challenges that are beyond our control like acts of Nature, or a UFO landing directly on top of our shop. We will be keeping you all informed with regular updates of where we’re at with production and if anything does go wrong you will be the first to know through our backer exclusive updates where we will talk about our problem and our solution.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
You will always be able to upgrade your dock to any system, phone or cable. Your lamp will ship with the included cable and adapter block that corresponds to whichever phone you currently use, If you use 2 phones you can use the dock for one phone and one of the rear USB ports for another. If in the future you happen to change phone models and need a different cable or adapter we will be offering those at discounted prices to existing lamp owners through our web page. We currently have one adapter block that will fit our charge cable options which are; lightning, micro usb, and thunderbolt. And one adapter block for Apple's 30 pin connector.
