Contagion has thus far been funded out of pocket. It would be nice to continue development on our own but we have to be realistic, we've run into some costs which would be a challenge without the support of our Fans. We're asking for your help in crossing the finish line not alone as a small development team but together as a community.
We would like to be clear in that Contagion is already at this time playable and currently in Closed Beta. All 3 Game-Modes and 4 of the 5 Maps are being streamed on Twitch.tv by testers daily. We're also updating and polishing the game daily. So why Kickstarter?
Some people are confused why they shouldn't just wait till our Official Release on Steam to purchase a copy of the game. Well, those who pledge on Kickstarter for $15 (or more) will receive all previous tiers and some exclusive in game bonuses. Another incentive is a head start to play the game before the official release date, once Kickstarter money is approved. Please read the F.A.Q. for more information regarding this.
With this money we plan to put it to the following uses:
- Cover various engine/license fees (engine, sound tools, software licenses, etc.)
- Expand our initial reach with marketing
- Server costs (you need somewhere to play!)
$75,000 • While we’re focused on delivering Contagion to both Mac & Linux users whether or not we reach this stretch goal, we have to take into account the extra fees for each platform. Your support will most definitely expedite our efforts and be appreciated by those waiting on said digital releases.
$100,000 • We’re eager to release free Downloadable Content (No Season passes here) which of course means we hope to continue development at no additional cost to you and the rest of the community, however the developers have families and while we’re confident in the release of Contagion we know there are no guarantees. If we were to hit this stretch goal there would be nothing holding us back. We could then develop and deliver at a steady rate:
- 4 New Weapons
- 4 New Characters
- 2 New Maps
- 1 New Game-mode (Flatline - A wave based survival mode that fits our current theme and style)
$125,000 • As with the previous stretch goal, there is a plan in place and as always we want to complete the work without taxing our community but knowing we can afford the work involved as well as the ability to set deadlines it sure doesn’t hurt. Reaching this goal we will deliver:
- 4 New Weapons
- 4 New Characters
- 2 New Maps
- 1 New Game-mode (Cruise - This one involves vehicles and will require quite a bit of prototyping and balancing but is one we’re excited to get started on)
$150,000 • Continued future support of Contagion guaranteed with new maps, content, community feedback we can work with to improve the overall experience for as long as we can afford to. We of course speak of not just this stretch goal but that in which we can fund from our own earnings like we have throughout the development of Contagion thus far.
$250,000 • We, like many others from the community wish to see Contagion reach consoles and reaching this goal will make this a strong possibility and one we plan to again whether we reach this stretch goal or not will pursue to the best of our abilities.
There is no way to pay directly through PayPal alone due to the protection Kickstarter/Amazone Payments provides which is why major Credit Cards are required. But there are options for you!

Contagion is a Cooperative Zombie Survival Horror FPS game built on a heavily modified version of Valve's Source Engine. The game challenges players to conserve ammo, rely on your team, and work together to survive the zombie onslaught. Players will face traditional (NPC) zombies as well as former teammates who have been passed on and joined the walking deceased, fueling the carnage to come. The game has been in development for two and a half years after recovering from a disagreement with the original co-founder thus the delay.
- Play alone offline or online with friends (up to 8 players)
- Multiple game modes.
- Play as either Human or Zombie
- Randomly generated weapon, ammo, and item placement.
- Unpredictable and intelligent zombie spawning system that adjusts to the current situation..
- A pathing and objective system that has you returning to the same map repeatedly without losing that fresh feel.
- Full Steamworks support. (Trading Cards, Achievements etc.)
Gameplay as a human
- FPS mechanics.
- Escape Game-mode: work together or alone to complete objectives and make it to a randomly generated escape point.
- Extraction Game-mode: Work together to find, protect, and extract helpless (NPC) survivors to a safe location.
- Hunted Game-mode: With supplies low, fend off fellow survivors who would like nothing more than to be sifting through your pockets in this free for all, last man or woman standing game-mode.
- Use stealth, distractions, and strategies to covertly avoid zombies or take them down quietly now that ammo is a rare and valuable commodity.
Gameplay as a zombie
- Call upon and create your own zombie hoard to better break through fortifications and hunt your prey.
- Selectively let the AI take control of your character so as to blend in with the mindless hoard in an attempt to camouflage yourself and avoid being singled out while also having the jump on unsuspecting survivors..
- When the opportunity presents itself Grapple a player and sink your teeth into flesh causing both damage and a chance of infection which comes in handy if they manage to escape.
- Zombie Vision enhances the senses allowing you to better see in the dark and track your prey.
We would also like to point out that Contagion will fully support Steam's Trading Card system and will release soon after launch.
A sincere thank you email from the team for your contribution. Every little bit helps!

You'll be joined by other members of the team such as Alex Wright (COO) and Ulrich Gollick (CIO) where we'll play the Dev build sharing never before seen features and content as well as discussing our plans for the future, dining out, and travel.
Ever wanted to visit Japan? Have the people who created Contagion show you around!
Monochrome LLC was Founded late 2009 by Brian Comer who is known less for his Industry work and more for his Total Conversion Modifications like Zombie Panic: Source and NeoTokyo, both of which are popular Half-Life 2 Mods. It's worth mentioning that Contagion is in fact a "spiritual successor" to Zombie Panic.
But without the talented and steadfast team consisting of Alex Wright the current COO, Ulrich Gollick the current CIO, Dec Doyle who's expertise would leave us no where near the progress we've achieved thus far, as well as rest of the guys who are well known modders and industry veterans from all across the globe we would not be here today. With us spread out on many continents the team quickly adopted a Virtual Developer model for the development of Contagion.
This means that many of us have never met in person and yet call it with a straight face a true family. Of the few of us here at Monochrome we are based at locations such the US, UK, Germany, Sweden, Singapore, Romania, and Japan. Having setup booths at both GDC 2012 and PAX Prime 2012 a handful of us have actually had the benefit to meet face to face and together as a team share our game with thousands.
Risks and challenges
We are confident here at Monochrome that we can achieve our goal of providing a unique and entertaining experience the fans will love with our game Contagion regardless of this Kickstarter, but your support will not only be appreciated but will also create a more productive and rewarding outcome.
Although, in order to meet with our high quality standards, this can sometimes mean production delays in order to ensure we have quality assets and features for you to enjoy.
You have our word not only as a company but as individuals who have put everything we've got into this project with a focus on breaking away from carbon copy games and developing something truly enjoyable and fresh, that should any delays or new info arise we promise to inform all of our backers and fans immediately.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
For those who pledged $15 or more will receive their game as soon as the kickstarter funds are cleared which is should be some time before October 25th giving you a head start.
Most definitely. You will be sent a Steam key which once activated will be linked to your steam account as a full purchased copy of Contagion.
Yes! That was a typo we missed. You will receive all previous tiers if you buy the $25 dollar tier.
It should read like this:
"THE WALL OF FAME: All previous Tiers + Have your name forever be listed in the Contagion Credits proudly showing your dedication to the project."
It should be "all previous non-limited Tiers" that was a typo we missed. You will receive all previous non-limited tiers if you buy either of those tiers.
They should read like this:
THE MISSING PERSONS: All previous non-limited tiers + Have your picture plastered on a missing persons poster in-game.
THE WANTED: All previous non-limited Tiers + Have your picture plastered on a wanted poster in-game.
No. We understand not all pledgers are located in the US and may want to select another location for their server. If we reach our goal and after Kickstarter ends on the 13th we will have to wait about a week for Credit Card charges to be cleared.
We will then contact you and find schedule a time to setup your package. We will discuss a number of options so that we can properly meet your expectations to the best of our abilities including Server location.
Oh definitely not!!! Our Character artist will work with you to model, sculpt, bake, and texture a zombie that looks just like you! Or slightly modified if you prefer. This includes clothing, accessories, etc. You will be a unique zombie among our modular zombies that stands out. Forever a part of Contagion!
We will perform unique motion capture animations and a special rig to your character and if you wish use your moans (edited in our Studio in Germany to fit) to make it truly yours.
Our Official Steam release is October 25th, 2013 with Early Access at the cost of $15
For those who pledged $15 or more will receive their game and previous tiers (unlike buying off Steam) as soon as the Kickstarter funds are cleared which is some time before October 25th giving you a head start.
Later this year when Early Access is complete the full price of Contagion will be $20 per user or $60 for the 4 Pack
(After Early Access the keys will still work as this is considered a full game purchase)
Most definitely. We signed our agreements quite a long time ago and you can find our Store Page at - http://store.steampowered.com/app/238430/
The game will release October 25th with Early Access on Steam
Kickstarter uses Amazon Payments because it allows them to mark charges to be charged at a later date if a project is successful or if it isn't then release it so no one is charged.
PayPal cannot do this and so does not meet the requirements needed to handle a KS project. They are also not currently built to handle crowd-funding which is something they are looking into.
Until this changes PayPal payments cannot be paid directly to KS making it difficult to use for KS project funding. We are currently researching the many ways others have done it and so far many of them have cost time and money and don't fit our current schedule. We are still looking and have a few ideas we're bouncing around so it's not exactly a dead option at the moment.
THAT SAID!!! There are other options in the form of Pre-paid Visa/MasterCard's or Virtual Credit Cards (listed at the top of the page). Can even set yourself up with a PayPal Prepaid Card!
Our stretch goals were put in place to help us achieve our goals faster as it's all coming out of pocket and what we're able to earn from sales knowing that we couldn't afford high end Marketing and PR.
$75k - With this we can afford to purchase the 3rd party license bundles we'd require to begin work on Mac & Linux now rather than much later. It's pretty straight forward, we don't have the money in the bank to do it right now and paying developers for their hard work in creating Contagion must be a priority (If we reach the Stretch goal the licenses will be paid for immediately).
$100k - You might be asking "Why are we paying for free DLC?" our plan is to provide free content and avoid DLC packs that cost you money which has grown into a more accepted trend. $25k more will not cover the cost of our planned New Game-Mode (Flatline), 2 New Maps, 4 New Characters, and 4 New Weapons but it will allow us to put the right people on it sooner and get it out there faster.
$125k - Same as before we have another Game-Mode (Cruise), 2 New Maps, 4 New Characters, and 4 New Weapons which helps us finish up our plans for a total of 16 unique characters (may be seeing old faces from Zombie Panic), Game-Modes, and more. It again does not cover the costs but helps us to get it done sooner without hurting quality.
$150k - Why this stretch goal? We've been releasing free content for Zombie Panic: Source for 6 years. We want to do the same with Contagion but that requires paying developers. I can't help saying that this will definitely not cover 3months let alone 6 years but it does help us commit our money and whatever we earn from Kickstarter in doing so. It also helps with the buffer after Kickstarter & Amazon take their cuts of 5% and 3% from the entirety of our final amount pledged after charges have cleared. Part of this Includes additional support for peripherals and more like Oculus Rift, Steam Box, and more. We are going to work towards all these goals either way but there is no denying that we as a start-up could use a hand.
$250k - We're eager to put Contagion on consoles but this is quite expensive. To even get the certifications needed (not going into development costs, ratings, Marketing, and PR on a whole new level) this amount wouldn't cover it. We're asking for help where both the community and ourselves can put our money together to get it done.
Those who think we're greedy even asking for $50k at this point should really do the research. We've already spent our family savings, just make it by with a second full time job to pay our way this far, and have not wasted a dime of it. If it's still confusing feel free to contact us or choose not to pledge. We won't be offended and for those that support us through videos, sharing links, pledging. We thank you for your understanding!
Only for international shipping yes. Please review your rewards when making a pledge outside the US.
With 5 days left we wanted a super discounted pack that clans and/or friends could pitch in together for a number of limited tiers you'd have to purchase separately otherwise to ready yourself for Contagion!
We're very happy having hit our goal and wanted to do something special thus the savings which is also seen with international shipping costs.
