When you think about “Science,” what comes to mind?
At Monkey Minion Press, when we think about “Science,” it’s always capitalized. To us, “Science” is more than a word - it’s a big idea or a burning question. Science is a way of thinking about the world and ferreting out it’s secrets.
But how do you write a small book about something so huge?
We realized that what most excited us about Science were the stories. The true-life tales about answered questions and discoveries, the “Ah-Ha” moment when everything came together...
The “EUREKA” moment.
Science is full of amazing stories about huge discoveries by great characters and we want to tell these stories in the only way we know how: through clear, accessible prose and beautiful, graphic art.
“EUREKA” is more than an art book with a Science theme. “EUREKA” is about some of the stories and characters we find so compelling. Albert Einstein and his imagination. Galileo and the Tower of Pisa. Grace Hopper and the first computer bug.
“EUREKA” will be written and drawn by Dane Ault and Ashlie Hammond, who have been writing, drawing and publishing kid’s books for years under the name Monkey Minion Press. This is our first Kickstarter.
We’ve been publishing books, greeting cards, and posters under the Monkey Minion Press banner for years. But of all of our projects, “EUREKA” is the biggest challenge.
We want “EUREKA” to be a celebration of Science and scientists, and it will be, but we also want to make a book that reflects our excitement about Science in general. We want a hard-bound, beautifully off-set printed book that will hold up to many re-reads and flip-throughs, and look great doing it.
However, high quality, hard-cover, full-color books are expensive to produce, so we need your help to make this project happen.
What kind of book will I get?
“EUREKA” will be at least 44 full-color pages of hard cover Science goodness. We plan to print our books through Regent Publishing because we know what they can do. (They printed our friend Cody Vrosh’s books and they are beautiful.)
We want “EUREKA” to be a case-bound hard cover book with a full-color printed and laminated cover. The interior paper is a medium-weight gloss paper with full color offset printing. This book is going to look great on the shelf and feel better in the hand.
What kind of prints will I get?
We’re printing the 6”x6” Giclees through a local Portland printshop called ColorHausPDX. We’ve worked with them extensively in the past and know that these guys can deliver high-quality, beautiful work.
The art prints will be 6”x6” giclee-printed on heavy 100% Cotton Rag photo quality paper using high-quality archival inks. These giclees will look nice and bright on your wall and they won’t fade or yellow over time.
In the US, we'll be shipping your books USPS Priority Mail so we can track each package. If your package comes to you damaged or fails to arrive, let us know and we'll do everything in our power to make it right.
Posters will be shipped separately to avoid damage. We'll ship them USPS 1st Class Parcel Post in a very sturdy cardboard tube. In the past, we've used this tube extensively to ship art for MMP with good results.
Outside of the US, we'll ship your rewards USPS 1st Class Parcel Post.
This project is all about "EUREKA," and so our stretch goal plans are mostly improvements to the book. We'd love to add new scientists and more pages. Dane dreams of printed endpapers and bookplates. Watch for updates to get more specific information when we get closer to our goal!
If you made it this far
Thank you so much. Your support means everything to us. Really.
If, like us, you are excited about Science and want "EUREKA" to become a real book, please share this with your friends, family, enemies, casual acquaintances, and people on the street.

Risks and challenges
As with any book, most of the risks in hitting our projected delivery time involves shipping or printing delays.
All of the artwork for the book (save any stretch goals) is done, and the writing is well on it's way. The peripheral products (poster, giclees, postcard, etc.) are all pretty well designed. Since we are printing them locally, delivery of those items *shouldn't* be a problem.
We want you to have your beautiful new book (and all the other rewards too!) as soon as possible. Of course, we will keep you updated if issues should arise.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
