This project will only be funded if it reaches its goal by Sun, April 14 2019 12:00 PM UTC +00:00.
In the daylight hours, the folk of the City of Great Lunden bustle through the drizzle. Its wards are alive with pickpockets, street brawls, puking drunkards, muggings, and murder. This is the capital city of the Haven Isles and those that come here get streetwise quickly. Then, the night comes.
As the barely-seen sun sets over the myriad of tiled rooftops, Great Lunden is plunged into a green and dangerous gloom.
In the Royal Palace, Queen Elspeth IV’s mood matches the night. The Mad Queen, as she is known, is fickle and paranoid. Her hatred of gossips and spies, as well as her tantrums, spread fear amongst her court. Dukes and duchesses quiver as she glowers at them all through half-closed eyes. One of their deaths is near.
The queen is not the only danger in the cobbled streets of the city. The corrupt city guard, known as the ‘Peekers’ patrol the gloombug lantern-lit city wards looking for cowering souls to intimidate. Unmentionable horrors lurk in the sewers below the narrow alleys and streets. Assassins sneak across the Nightways of the precipitous rooftops above. And in the fields beyond the beryl-bathed outer wards, where shadows fall, lurk things that are hungry.
Thank you for taking the time to come here and look at this Kickstarter project.
The City of Great Lunden is a city setting for use with old school roleplaying games. It is designed to be used alongside The Midderlands setting and hence is 'The Midderlands Compatible'. Game stats are presented for use with Swords & Wizardry Complete, which means they are easily adopted for old school games/retroclones. Much of the content is designed to be as system-neutral as possible, so feel free to use it with any fantasy game system you like.
This book DOES NOT require The Midderlands setting, but it is greatly enhanced with it. There might be references to things found in the other books. Don't worry if you don't have those previous settings books, you can still get them here, and we will offer them as add-ons via BackerKit once the Kickstarter is over.

A Bit of History
We have previously run two successful Kickstarter campaigns, delivered on/before time, so please pledge with confidence.
- The first one funded The Midderlands - An OSR Setting and Bestiary. A small setting based in a grim, fantasy, late medieval/early renaissance, part of a twisted middle-england (middle-Havenland).
- The second one funded The Midderlands Expanded. This opened the setting up to the whole of the twisted version of the British Isles (The Haven Isles).
The Midderlands book won a Gold ENnie for Best Cartography at the 2018 ENnie Awards, so you can be sure you are getting a quality product.
The book itself will be 224 pages of great, city-based, game-juice, all in glorious, high specification, hardback and/or digital format. Here's how the current content is looking:
- Introduction - includes a short story focused on the pre-generated characters.
- The City of Great Lunden - A touch of history, details of the inner wards, outer wards, and beyond the outer wards.
- The streets, law and order, defences, waste, etc.
- 22 detailed structures comprising a full page elevation view art piece, a page of floorplans/maps, and a page of information about the structure.
- The Great Thameswater river
- Beneath the city (sewers)
- Above the streets (rooftops) - Includes rules for rooftop adventures
- Oddities - more magic items, spells, flora, and fauna.
- Some factions, guilds and institutions and notable NPCs
- Adventure hooks and a short heist adventure
Warning: As before, in this new book there is humour, some swear words, and graphic descriptions.
Here are some content tasters...
The original books have received great reviews and compliments, and this one will be just as good, if not better!
“[The Midderlands] as a small area campaign supplement is the best I’ve ever seen, displacing Dave Arneson’s Blackmoor First Fantasy Campaign area, which up until now -- and that’s decades -- has been my favorite one.” - Matt Finch (Creator of Swords & Wizardry).
"I love this book, and have no hesitation at all, in giving it a 'Legendary' rating." - Red Dice Diaries.
You can also head over to the MonkeyBlood Design website and check out the products and video reviews.
So what the hell are you creating here? Good question. We are creating three things: a 224-page book, a map set of 4 no. A2 folded poster maps, and six pre-generated character cards.
The City of Great Lunden Book
Available in Physical Copy and Digital PDF.
The book will be the same quality as the originally Kickstarted 'The Midderlands - An OSR Mini-setting & Bestiary'. The book is professional quality, offset printed (not a print-on-demand offering). My chosen printer has been established in the UK since 1862 and they make wondrous books.
The book will be 224 pages, A5 casebound, smyth-sewn with green head and tail bands, matt laminated cover with spot UV titles, and printed end papers. It will have two green ribbon bookmarks. The pages will be printed in colour on 115gsm silk paper. It will kick butt.
Inside, the book will consist of approx. 224 pages of text and art (colour and mono).
The Map Set
There will be four double-sided A2 maps (machine-folded to A5). The maps will be printed both sides on 130gsm silk paper, and provided loose. The maps contain no rules-specific information, so are literally useful for any game!
The rear sides of each map will fit together to create a giant A0-sized map of The City of Great Lunden.
The following maps (by Glynn Seal - 2018 Gold ENnie winner for Best Cartography) will be provided, and as you can see they are already 95% completed other than minor tweaks. Here are all the individual maps so far...
Map 1 FRONT - Great Lunden and Environs
Map 2 FRONT - Great Lunden Inner Wards
Map 3 FRONT - Great Lunden Sewer Network (Inner Wards only)
Map 4 FRONT - Rooftop Chase Map (an enlarged area of the Inner Wards)
Map 1 REAR - Great Lunden Enlarged North West section
Map 2 REAR - Great Lunden Enlarged North East section
Map 3 REAR - Great Lunden Enlarged South West section
Map 4 REAR - Great Lunden Enlarged South East section
Pregenerated Character Cards
A set of six A5, 400gsm, double-sided gloss laminated cards, each with a pre-generated character from the book (also featuring in the book's short story). The cards can be re-used by using a Lumocolor or other suitable correctable dry-erase pen (not available as part of this Kickstarter).
Special 'Stitched Flesh' Dust Jacket*
Guild Master pledge levels will get their book with a super-creepy dust jacket made to look like stitched flesh. It will be printed on 170gsm silk, and gloss laminated. Don't worry, if it's too creepy and you don't want it, then let me know and I'll remove it from the package pre-shipment.
* Not real... just in case I need to say it.

£14,500 - Stretch Goal 5 - Edwin Nagy City Adventure
Edwin Nagy, man of many talents and one of the original writers of The Midderlands and The Midderlands Expanded, will write a circa 16-page (give or take a few pages) city adventure set in the City of Great Lunden. This will be a PDF (delivered via DriveThruRPG) given to all backers at all pledge levels. Guild Master reward levels will get this as an at-cost coupon.
This adventure will bundle with the previous stretch goal becoming a circa 64-page Print-on-demand version, which will become available to purchase separately to this Kickstarter (via DriveThruRPG) if this stretch goal gets funded.
£15,000 - Stretch Goal 6 - Sewer and Street Adventure/Chase Rules
Once again, John Large will pick up the mantle and work on some sewer/street adventure/chase rules for the murky, sludge-filled sewers, and cobbled thoroughfares of the city. This will be a PDF (delivered via DriveThruRPG) given to all backers at all pledge levels.
A later Print-on-demand version will become available to purchase separately to this Kickstarter (via DriveThruRPG) if this stretch goal gets funded. This will not be bundled with the above adventures. Guild Master reward levels will get this as an at-cost coupon.
There are currently no add-ons available in this Kickstarter campaign directly. However, you will be able to add things on to your orders in BackerKit when you check-out for any physical shipping.

- Midderzine 2 (A5 softcover)

Important Note: For physical rewards, all the packing/shipping charges listed below will be collected separately by Backerkit after the end of the campaign and prior to shipping. PLEASE DO NOT INCREASE YOUR PLEDGES TO INCLUDE SHIPPING IN THE KICKSTARTER. This also helps to spread the costs for you, as the Kickstarter collection and shipping/add-ons will be collected in different months.
The digital versions of products will be delivered via DriveThruRPG as physical items ship. No extra cost other than your pledge for this. You will need to setup an account at DriveThruRPG prior to delivery. This email address will be collected by survey on successful Kickstarter, just in case it's different to your Kickstarter email address.
The cost of packaging and shipping is NOT included in the Kickstarter pledge levels above. These pledge level shipping costs are dependent on your location and will be collected separately via BackerKit after the campaign ends. Just so you are made aware ahead of time, these are noted below and subject to slight variation (Royal Mail price increases).
See here http://www.royalmail.com/international-zones for information on shipping zones and countries.
These costs are estimated as follows:
We will do our utmost to keep these charges 'at cost' and as small as possible. The costs are at the mercy of the UK postal service and because of the book size are just outside of the "large letter" rate and deemed to be a "small parcel". We always ship outside the UK using a trackable service. Please be aware that there may be customs charges applied to deliveries based on your countries import tax rules for books and leaflets.
Having done this successfully twice before, I'm quite comfortable with the timescales and potential delays that are likely to crop up. Much of the work is underway already and delivery date is achievable, if not before. Depending on the campaign success, the shipping may be handled in phases as the ordered books and add-ons arrive from suppliers, so some backers may receive their pledge items before others. I will keep you appraised.
As always, your support and sharing of the campaign can help it reach it's goal. Please, please share the campaign on social media, and feel free to blog about it too.
Your support is fantastic and valued. Thank you for reading.
Risks and challenges
This is my third Kickstarter.
My first two were delivered on-time, on budget, and have been well-received and well-regarded.
I have also been involved in many Kickstarters as a committed and timely contributor and backed many others too. I have created and self-published books already via OBS.
I have a good network of suppliers, and contingency planning. I understand many of the risks, and have experience of project management in other areas of my life. I am thorough by nature and this Kickstarter would not be "active" unless I was sure of successful delivery.
I have many things already in place, and can devote much of my time to successful delivery.
Short of Armageddon, not meeting funding needs or ill health this will happen.
