About this project
For the past year we have been working to create a new conceptual print only magazine called Momma Tried. Momma Tried takes inspiration from magazines as we remember them from our youth, and is a presentation of what we’d like magazines to be: full of engaging art and writing, subversive humor, and inclusive portrayals of bodies and sexuality.
As an ad-free publication, Momma Tried seeks to explore the tropes, manipulations, and possibilities of this medium. Through an aspect of the magazine that we call “disruptive content,” we’re partnering with artists to create original and appropriation based satirical adverts that deconstruct the nature of advertising, while simultaneously embodying the essential visual role of magazine ads.
While much of our content is submissions based, we’re also exploring our current inspirations through nude and semi-nude photo-editorials, created in collaboration with some of the most talented artists in our community. In the making of this issue we were strongly influenced by Kenneth Anger, Stevie Nicks, and children’s games from the 60’s, and were thrilled to have so many amazing people help bring these ideas to life.

What your generosity will support
Momma Tried will be a print only magazine in full color, perfect bound, produced in limited editions of 1000. The magazine itself will be approximately 144 pages long (the coming last few weeks of layout will reveal an exact number soon) and will be a melange of art, articles, disruptive content, and our collaborative photo editorials. Our distribution plan is to stock the magazine in independent bookstores, progressive art spaces and galleries, and small shops locally, nationally, and internationally, fully embracing the romance and potential of the tangible “dead” medium of print publications. All of the funds raised will be put directly towards the costs of printing our magazine. If we are able to exceed our goal amount, the proceeds will be applied to the cost of distributing the magazine, which we will otherwise pay for out of pocket.
By turning away from digital formats with the magazine, we’re hoping to create a publication that is an archive of a moment in time and feels more permanent and precious than what can be achieved with pages displayed on the internet. Additionally, many of our collaborators are emerging artists who have never before had their work published, so being able to provide a new platform of visibility for their brilliant creations is one of the most important aspects of this project.

We’re so excited about this project that we’re already lining up work for the second issue of the magazine, as our larger goal is to be able to produce Momma Tried bi-annually. To support this, all of the proceeds from newsstand sales of the first issue of the magazine will be put towards the printing and distribution costs for the second issue.
Working with dozens of incredibly talented artists and writers to bring Momma Tried to life has been a dream come true, and it’s a project that we sincerely believe in. As with every step of the creation of this magazine, we can’t do it alone; with your help we can share this project and the visions of our brilliant collaborators with the world!

Risks and challenges
During the past year of working on Momma Tried we faced many obstacles and challenges, primarily figuring out how to balance creating something as time consuming as a new magazine while still working to pay rent. In the past 5 months in particular, we’ve hit our stride and have made outstanding progress, which has often included sacrificing paying jobs, time with friends, and the pursuit of other creative endeavors. The past year has taught us so many lessons that will inform how we will approach Issue N.2, and at this point in the process we’re so close to being complete with the first issue that many of our biggest challenges are behind us.
After fundraising for the first issue, the next big step is to distribute it, and we’ve been working hard to determine what places around the world would be the best fit for Momma Tried. Based on the very encouraging list of locations that we’ve compiled thus far, we have begun reaching out to unusual shops, independent bookstores, and art spaces about stocking our first issue. Given the amount of enthusiasm we’ve received from friends and strangers for the magazine to date and our team’s experience establishing and maintaining wholesale and consignment accounts, the challenge of distribution seem totally surmountable. This last step of the process is going to be a lot of work, but our track record of overcoming obstacles and exceeding even our own expectations gives us confidence that it is attainable.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
