Inventing is human nature. We see something and say, "That could be done better if only...". The process of analyzing a problem, experimenting with new ideas and physically bringing a new object into this world is incredibly fulfilling. Where would we be today without inventors throughout history?
It has been my mission since my early years as a school teacher to enable, encourage and cultivate the "inventing mindset" in children and adults alike. We all possess the innate capacity to create value where there was once only an idea.
My goal was simple, invent the fastest, longest spinning, most entertaining physics toy in the world. Momentum offers students of all ages to see the inventing process as well as the amazing results possible from a single idea.
Spin Momentum while meditating in 15 to 20-minute intervals daily and discover the world around you in a new state of focused awareness. Turn off your electronics, phones and devices and re-discover the physical world around you.
I designed Momentum using a pen and paper. Even though I am proficient in CAD software, I find it crucial to design using my mind without the aid of computers. This allows me to create a prototype and test it using my senses to first analyze the problem before making improvements. In a world of engineers completely dependent on computers, I find that designing with a pen and paper using math is faster and more effective.
The Precision Stabilizer System of Momentum is the key to achieving extremely high rotations per minute. I discovered that spinning with a string is the original method used thousands of years ago so I set out to create a system that achieved the most efficient results. I designed the entire Momentum System in a single 20-minute meditation session. Yet it took me over two months to create the process to machine it.
I personally wrote all CNC programs long-hand at my CNC lathe and machined over one hundred prototypes. The entire Momentum System contains 12 precision machined parts with most tolerances within one thousandth of an inch. I only used CAD software after the final design was complete to document my work with 2D prints and 3D renderings.
I have specifically chosen Brass as the material for the Momentum System due to it's mass, physical properties and color. Brass is a premium metal that is 15 times more expensive than aluminum by weight. You deserve the best and I only build the best so Brass is the superior choice.
So what's the secret behind Momentum's record-breaking success? Reducing friction, discovering balance and gaining maximum velocity where my three primary goals.
Incorporating a tiny precision press-fit Silicon Nitride (Si3N4) Ball as the contact point reduces friction to near zero.
This required a calculator, some relatively simple math and trial and error. In short, I designed Momentum with 90% of the mass near the circumference thus maximizing centrifugal force.
Achieving maximum velocity required an external apparatus, which is the PSS or Precision Stabilization System. This system incorporates fully enclosed precision micro-ball bearings both in the base and inside the hollow tube of the spinning body. Holding everything in line with the rotating axis allows for maximum acceleration with minimum resistance.
Momentum is made entirely by Jason Harrelson in Denver, Colorado using precision CNC machinery including a special lathe known as a turn/mill center and a vertical machining center. The process requires three spindles, 24 tools and thousands of hand-written lines of g-code to create all 12 parts.

Momentum is easy to learn yet challenging to master. Just about anyone can achieve a 10 to 15-minute spin at 8,000+ RPM. But what about a 20-minute spin starting at 15,000 RPM?

The spinning top dates back to antiquity and is one of the oldest known toys. Early versions were made from wood and sometimes featured an iron tip to improve performance and durability. They most often were set into motion through the use of a pull string. Tops evolved in the 20th century made from plastic and metal. Today, there are numerous high end spinning objects made with modern CNC machinery by dozens of fine artisans and machine shops around the world.
I would like to encourage you to back this Kickstarter project and enjoy the latest innovations found in Momentum. These will surely be added to the history and evolution of this fascinating piece of entertainment. Today, we may ask, "Is a spinning top a toy, a tool or a science experiment?"
Momentum provides an excellent classroom demonstration of Newton's Three Laws of Motion.
Law 1 - An object in motion (or at rest) tends to stay in motion (or at rest) until an external force is applied (also known as Galileo's Law of Inertia)
Law 2 - Force equals Mass x Acceleration (F = ma)
Law 3 - For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction
Any science lab can easily reproduce the equation I used to create Momentum by verifying the mass using a scale and measuring the RPM at start-up with a tachometer. This will give students the values to find Force for Law 2.
Drag Coefficient & Friction
By measuring the time it takes to come to a rest combined with periodic tachometer readings (every minute), it is also possible to estimate the drag coefficient and friction between the contact point (Si3N4 ball) and surface. Experiment with surfaces of varying hardness and porosity for a wide range of results. (Law 1)

Momentum is a metaphor for life. Gaining Momentum in your life is the secret to achieving your goals. I will share with you how I have gained so much Momentum throughout my lifetime that I am thrust into action every single morning at 5am.
First you must start with an idea. A big idea. I'm serious, think of a really big idea that inspires you. Tell your family and friends the importance this single idea holds in your future. Grow this idea. Make it part of your everyday speech so that others may offer you feedback. Feed this idea by exploring every variation already in existence today. Bring this idea to life with your own actions. Take 15 minutes every day to meditate on your achievements and goals until this one idea becomes bigger than you. This is how little people achieve great things, with one big idea.
My big idea began when I was a young boy. I grew up traveling America in the 1970's in a semi-truck with my sister and parents. I spent a lot of time gazing out the window between truck stops and rest areas. And after asking a thousand questions about the airplanes I would see in the sky, I suddenly exclaimed, "I'm going to be an airplane pilot!"
A few years later, I was still hooked on the idea of flying planes, but I also wanted to know how they worked. Luckily, my Dad understood the necessity of learning from experiences. He would carefully lead me through a series of questions whenever I wanted to understand something. Discovering the answer for myself is far more valuable than being told the answer. With his guidance, I discovered the world around us is fascinating with more to learn than I could ever imagine. And then came the day when I announced to my parents, "I'm going to be a famous inventor!"
Well I'm not famous, but I have been a professional inventor for most of my life. I founded Harrelson Trumpets when I was 19 years old. And for the past 22 years, I have been obsessed with building better trumpets by incorporating physics, specifically Newton's Laws of Motion, into my research and development. I believe there is always more to learn, more to achieve and more to create, which is why I am looking forward to the next innovation every single day.
My big idea began when I was a little kid and today it has become a company that serves professional musicians in 40 countries. What will you do with your big idea?
Momentum saved my life. I am launching this Kickstarter campaign exactly four years after suffering a major stroke that erased my short and long term memory. You can read more in my blog to get the full story. The short version is that at age 37, I woke up in a hospital bed with no memory of my identity, family or friends. I had to re-learn how to walk, talk, read, write, play trumpet, type on this computer, program cnc machinery, etc.
That day was like being born for the first time. Everything was new to me. Grass and trees seemed incredibly amazing. My dog, Oscar, was instantly my best friend. The sun was intensely bright, colors so vibrant and the cool breeze was perfect. It was like experiencing life for the very first time. Why don't we see the world this way every day?

My friends, family, clients, career and previous habits literally picked me up and moved me forward the very next day. This encouraged me to re-learn everything I had lost and more. The challenges I have overcome to arrive at this moment have been beyond what most people can imagine. Yet, my momentum was so great that I have pushed my limits further than I thought possible. I began developing a program known as Trumpet Momentum over 15 years ago. Trumpet Momentum is a physics-based approach to brass playing and my original business model would have developed this educational resource right along with my trumpet research and development. But I didn't have the time or financial resources to pursue both Harrelson Trumpets and Trumpet Momentum so I set one project aside.
I decided to make 2016 the year I set Trumpet Momentum back into motion. I have developed the program over the years, but key components have not yet become reality. These include:
Momentum Top/Gyroscope - demonstrates physics principles and parallels to brass playing
MiniBell - experience pure resonance on all partials to implement Trumpet Momentum performance principles
ASAT (Air Speed Aperture Trainer) - combine all physical factors to master balance in all registers
All three of these tools are essential in applying the Trumpet Momentum approach to each participant's practice and performance. In short, Trumpet Momentum is the only comprehensive physics-based approach to brass playing ever created. The success rate of this program has been extremely high. Momentum FS "Free Spin" Edition finished in Brass with Chrome Steel contact ball. This one is spun with your fingers. My best time is around 8 minutes.
"Long Spin" Edition finished in brass with Chrome Steel contact ball. The LS model may be spun by hand or with a string with the aid of a pencil tip or using the reverse side of the Axial Stabilizer, which was designed to work with the LS and MV models. My best time is 17 minutes and 25 seconds!
"Maximum Velocity" Edition finished in Brass with Chrome Steel contact ball or Si3N4 ball. The center hub has precision ABEC 3 bearings press fit inside to reduce friction when used with the Axial Stabilizer and Precision Stabilization System. The MV model has shattered all records for speed and time in the 38 gram class. In fact, it spins around twice as long as other precision tops in the 45 gram range. This one was featured in the Kickstarter video several times and is spun by finger tip, string or with the Precision Stabilizer System. My best time is pretty impressive. You're going to have to top 20 minutes to break my record. I have measured the RPM with a high precision laser tachometer to be above 15,000 RPM on my best spins.
The Axial Stabilizer works with the LS and MV models. It may be used to hold the top steady when using a pull string or in conjunction with the Precision Stabilization System. It also doubles as a gyroscope attachment allowing you to move the spinning top around freely, releasing it anyplace and even picking it up again to place it on a new surface all while in the same spin.
Pull Ring and Kevlar Cord
Machined from solid brass, like all other Momentum components with a hole for the Kevlar Cord. Two Kevlar cords are included with every reward designated Kevlar cord. Other strings will work as well including nylon kite string and coated fishing line. 20K Bonus Reached - you get one extra Kevlar cord for a total of three!
Precision Stabilization System
This system incorporates fully enclosed precision micro-ball bearings both in the base and inside the hollow tube of the spinning body. Holding everything in line with the rotating axis allows for maximum acceleration with minimum resistance. The PSS is a spring loaded push button system allowing the MV Body to be removed with necessary clearance while spinning at maximum velocity.

The Pull Ring and string fit inside the PSS. The recess for the Precision Stabilizer was specifically designed to make launches easy. Just press down into the base, pull the string and lift the PSS out of the base to flip the Momentum Body upside down and go!

Risks and challenges
With over twenty years of experience in design, manufacturing and bringing new ideas to market, I know there is always potential for missing deadlines. This is why I have focused on pre-production before launching this Kickstarter campaign.
I have moved past the prototyping phase and completed time studies on every piece of Momentum's production to better predict delivery dates. I've also documented every tool, cutting insert and all stock material required to fulfill a given number of rewards. And I have arranged redundant suppliers for pull string, bearings and contact balls, which are the only components not produced within my own shop.
Working with an outside vendor for great product packaging was also initiated before launch and should be complete by the end of June. And contracting our regular plating provider will ensure fast turnaround on plated rewards.
There are always risks. One of my CNC machines could go down for repair for a few days or a shipment of brass stock could be late. Overall, there are few things that could delay production for more than a week since I have done all of the prep work necessary to gain even more Momentum with this exciting project.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
