About this project
MUSES OF MODERN DANCE defines, simplifies and make real the roots of modern dance for today’s one world global community. MUSES OF MODERN DANCE is an amazing choreographic reanimation taking you on an imaginative and exciting journey through the ground breaking birth of American modern dance. America’s pre-eminent modern dance revolutionaries Isadora Duncan, Loie Fuller, and Ruth St. Denis emancipated the world of dance through their artistic passion, primacy of vision and an intuitive conception of art beyond the superficial. At the turn of the 20th Century these American female dancers were at the forefront of artistic enlightenment - moving naturally from the inside-out; authentically interpreting dances from around the world; opening unexplored horizons with a pallete and imagination for special effects - this was Duncan, St. Denis and Fuller. MUSES OF MODERN DANCE brings to life these reaminations and interpretations to excite the imagination. Performing at Piccolo Spoleto 2012, MOMD will bring to life once again the incredible works of this enduring American modern dance triumvirate. Performing the MOMD repertoire at this forty-year-old, prestigious 17-day arts festival in Charleston, SC will re-kindle a communal artistic spark for the not-to-be-forgotten roots of modern dance and will keep the torch burning brightly for all. Embrace the past. Engage the present. Envision the future.
The funds we raise pay for the production costs, travel, advertisement, and overhead for MOMD, allowing this group to take their spectacle to the public at Piccolo Spoleto. MOMD are asking for no more than what is minimally necessary to present a work of this magnitude. To this stage producer Patricia W. Ward has almost single-handedly raised funds and awareness for this project, but she can no longer do it alone, and needs help to make this dream a reality. MOMD is only two years old - for the company to be accepted at Piccolo Spoleto is an incredible opportunity, and one that can not be passed up - but MOMD needs help from those who would support the arts, and especially dance, to make this happen.
In addition to Kickstarter MOMD has been applying for grants, using direct mail correspondence to raise funds, and essentially throwing themselves at the feet of the artistic community. This is a very serious project, one with goals that extend far beyond Piccolo Spoleto - but it's a start, and MOMD needs your help to get there.
