I am incredibly excited to announce the upcoming release of my first Molly Newman EP. After four years away from wizard rock and five years away from the Pizookies, I'm determined to share my original music like never before. I've written a number of songs in the interim, the best four or five of which will be featured on this upcoming EP.
I'm shooting for the stars on this one, so instead of recording in my bedroom or my friend's garage, I'm taking my new band (!) with me into a studio called Tiny Telephone in San Francisco. With the expert guidance of sound engineer Jacob Winik and studio owner John Vanderslice, we'll be recording in the same studio where Death Cab For Cutie recorded Transatlanticism.
I am so eager to take my music to the next level and record at a truly professional studio with amazing musicians rounding out my songs. I'll be joined by my sister Rachel on keys and harmony vocals, my brother-in-law Paco on drums, and my friend Bryan on bass guitar. We have been practicing the songs and it is so gratifying to hear them come alive in the hands of such a capable group of musicians. I can't wait for you to all hear them too.
I've decided to try Kickstarter because on my preschool teacher salary I am unable to pay for studio time during the summer (when school is out of session), but I want to share my music with the world now, and at a level I have not attempted before.
If I can record this EP, and record it well, I will have a truly professional release that can more accurately reflect my songs to not only better serve my existing listeners but also help me develop a wider fan base that will enable me to play shows and hopefully one day tour.
Kickstarter is a unique and mutually beneficial way for my listeners to have an improved connection with me and my music, and for me to record at the level to which I aspire. I don't see the items listed to the right as rewards for donations - it's more like pre-ordering at a whole new level. As such, I've done my best to match pricing with things--both tangible and intangible--which you will hopefully wish to purchase.
I know that four or five songs seems like a small amount, so one of the main things you will get out of pre-ordering this EP will also be a digital EP of home recorded acoustic demos of other original songs that did not make the cut. I am hoping that on the strength of this EP I will gather enough steam to record a high-quality full-length LP in the summer of 2013. But with the combination of the two EPs from this Kickstarter campaign, you should be getting your fix of Molly music, if that's what you're jonesing for!
Other items you can buy here, besides the obvious pre-order of the album, include an embarrassing home-made EP of songs I wrote & recorded in high school, your choice of YouTube cover song, honey produced by my dad's bees, a pizza made by me, and an original song written just for you. Check out the detailed list to the right for more information and decide what you'd like to end up with!
NOTE: Every level of support receives EVERYTHING from the levels before it. In other words, if you pledge $20, you get the rewards for $20, $15, $10, $5, and $1. It's a cumulative purchasing scheme. Anyone who pledges $10 or more gets a copy of the EP when it comes out. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask me!
I want to be 100% transparent about the financial aspects of this, so if you're interested, the money is being raised for the following purposes.
- For the incredible pleasure and exciting privilege of recording in Tiny Telephone's B room, I will be paying $250 per day.
- For the guidance and technical wizardry of Jacob Winik, I will be paying $200 per day.
- To rent the beautiful, classic 1960's Ludwig drum kit in the studio, I will be paying $50 per day.
In total, the two days of recording I have scheduled will cost $1000. Both Kickstarter and Amazon take a cut of the money raised through my project, totaling 10%, so to come out of this with enough money for the recording I need to raise an additional $112. So to raise the money I need to pay for the recording and mixing of my album, my goal comes out to $1112.
The reason I've set a November release date is that in order to have the CD mastered and pressed, I'll need to put money aside from every paycheck from August - October to cover the cost. I know November is a long time away and for that I apologize. The August recording date is to give me and the band the time to rehearse and rewrite the songs over and over until they are perfect and ready to be recorded.
If enough people purchase items from the list on the right, I may be able to push the release date up to October or even September. If the amount surpasses the goal of $1112, here's where the money will go!
- $500 - professional mastering
- $600-1000 (depending on amount raised) - pressing 1000 copies of the album ($600 for sleeves, $1000 for digipaks or jewel cases).
- Anything else - paying the rest of the band for their time and effort, saving for recording a full-length album, touring, etc.
Thank you so much for your time reading this and/or watching the video! Most of all, thank you for your support!
