Update #5 - PayPal, Press, Plugs, and Pugs!

Hello Friends, 

Whoa… we just crossed 5,000 backers! We’re blown away, and so happy that so many people want to see our game become a reality. 

It’s been a huge week for us. We hit our funding goal in under 7 days, which was a major relief. Watching that number tick up seems like a good way to drive yourself crazy, and now we get to be a teensy bit less crazy going forward. 

We’ve got a bunch of news to share about the project, but we’ll try and keep it short for you all.


First off, PayPal! We’ve been asked by a number of people to accept PayPal pledges, particularly our friends overseas in places that are less credit card obsessed than we are in the U.S.. We didn’t want to do it until we hit our initial goal, as those pledges don’t count as far as Kickstarter is concerned. Well, they do count for us. So if you’ve held off backing because Amazon payments wasn’t an option, feel free to jump on board here

We’re going to be updating the total every day on the PayPal pledge page, and the main Kickstarter page. 

New Tier - Your Dog, In the Game

We discussed this tier before we launched. We weren't sure that anyone would be interested, but a few people suggested it, so we're giving it a shot.

We make your dog playable in game.

We will create a version of your beloved pet as a selectable dog in the game. You can travel the river with your own faithful companion at your side. Additionally, your little pal will be available in everyone’s game, so they can all spend some time with your friend.

We do have to place a few limits on this. Very tiny dogs will need to be made a bit larger. Very large dogs a little smaller. For everything to fit together, a dog in our game needs to be roughly in the 35-70lb range (maybe a cattle dog up to Labrador range). We could make your Chihuahua kind of giant, or your Bull Mastiff kind of a runt, but really small & really large dogs will create too many animation issues to support. We also won’t be changing the behavior. You may own a killer Cujo that could shred wolves all day, but that’s not what our game is about.

We know that’s a whole bunch of limitations, but we wanted to be clear about what we can do. If that sounds like the sort of thing you’d like, you can back us at the $4,000 level.


The press keeps noticing us! So much coverage. It’s a little nuts to see text we put in an update show up a couple hours later on IGN… it’s both awesome and terrifying.

The Know - This was actually last week, and we forgot to mention it. 

Game Trailers had some folks give off the cuff thoughts on the trailer on first viewing. 

Eurogamer, IGN, Joystiq, and a bunch of others reported on our stretch goals and getting funded.

We’ve updated the FAQ with a few questions. We’re still working on figuring out Mac system requirements, and will update once we know more. The questions via Kickstarter messages & comments have slowed down, so hopefully we’ve cleared up all the major issues.

If you made it this far into the update, congrats! As we’ve said before, we’re trying to limit the number of updates, so they tend to run a bit long. We’ve got some more stuff cooking for next week, including a nice surprise as a way to say thank you to our backers. 

We’ll leave you with another dog picture, because Bryn was jealous that my dog was getting all the attention. This is his little pug/chihuahua (A chug?! really?), Bear. What does Bear want? Who can know what lurks in the mind of a dog. 

We promise only 1 more dog picture. I’m saving my super cute 2nd dog to deploy in the final days of the Kickstarter to help push us over the edge on stretch goals. How is that possible, you ask? You haven’t seen how cute she is.

      It's Dogmeat, of course. Here's how this will play out: You decided to raft the Columbia River; Dogmeat was killed by one of the many forcefields deployed by the mutant superindians on the Columbia river.

      @Burak - poor wording choice on our part... the dog remains an NPC, it is the companion you play with.

      playeble dog would be a lot of fun but i prefer a clever dog as a npc with me like elizabeth in bioshock infinite. i mean if we can give orders to dog like searching, attack ( i don't know if there's an enemy), follow.
