About this project
YAYYYYYY!!!! What a wonderful, successful, thrilling campaign we had! Thanks to everyone who supported and shared our mission for ethical, artisanal American manufacturing! Please visit us at mohop.com and keep in touch via Facebook and Twitter!
STRETCH GOAL #2!!! Help us reach $70,000 and each pledge at the $20 level and above will receive a pair of slightly shiny, yet surprisingly neutral, metallic gold and yellow ribbons. Multiply your styling options by SHARING our campaign!
***ACHIEVED*** BECAUSE WE LOVE YOU GOAL!!! Help us reach $65,000 and each pledge at the $45 level and above will receive 4 pairs of nickel-plated O-rings in various sizes. These rings will REALLY expand your styling options - you can even make little buckles with them! Soooooo fun!
***ACHIEVED*** STRETCH GOAL #1!!! Help us reach $60,000 and each pledge at the $20 level and above will receive a pair of extra-wide, slightly-sweet yet slightly-punk, black and white striped ribbons.
Mohop shoes allow nearly infinite design options with just one pair of soles. Simply lace any ribbon in our comfy footbed to create your own one-of-a-kind, custom-fit pair!
There's just one problem: we can't keep up with demand.
AND THIS IS WHERE YOU BECOME THE GAME CHANGER!
The power of community is needed to fulfill this demand. Passion, support, faith and collaboration are necessary to go big. Today, we are determined to expand Mohop and the US-manufactured shoe market by opening up a new production line in Las Vegas, Nevada, creating jobs for Americans and working with the local community. We need your help to expand our robot & artisan army so we can produce much faster in 2014 and bring more of our shoes to happy feet all over the world!
A COLLABORATION BETWEEN ROBOTS, ARTISANS & YOU
Support US manufacturing. In order to competitively manufacture our shoes in the US, we’ve enlisted the help of robots. We are looking to expand our production capabilities by adding a spectacular four-headed CNC (Computer Numerical Control) machine and additional lasers to our up and coming Las Vegas manufacturing facility. Despite our laser robot army jokes, we’ve been working with this type of machinery for years and know they are quite docile and have no plans to become our overlords.
We know handmade objects are simply more special. While robots cut and carve many of our components, we try to retain as much artisanal quality as possible by assembling, shaping and finishing each pair of shoes by hand. Due to natural variations in wood, as well as the idiosyncrasies of each hand that makes the shoes, every pair of Mohop shoes is unique, just like you!
Feed your shoe addiction and creativity without breaking the bank! YOU are the final step in the creation of Mohop shoes. Our interchangeable sandals come with several sets of ribbons as well as a booklet of cards showing step-by-step illustrations of various ways to style your shoes. There is no wrong way to tie them! While you can lace them as simply as a tennis shoe and slide them on your feet while running out the door, you can also create much more elaborate styles using strips of fabric, multiple ribbons, decorative hardware or any variation you can dream of. ORIGINS OF MOHOP
Mohop began in 2005, when architect Annie Mohaupt wondered if she could make shoes using the woodworking equipment from her house renovation. Annie sought to design a shoe that would be as fun to wear as it was for her to make, with comfort and durability the highest priorities. Working mad-scientist style in the basement, night after night, prototype after prototype, Annie eventually came up with a pair she could (and did) walk 100 blister-free miles in.
Fast-forward to 2013. Mohop is a fast-growing eco-friendly footwear brand that gives women nearly infinite shoe design options with just one pair of soles. The shoes are currently being created by Annie, along with her CNC and laser robots, inside a former dominatrix dungeon in Chicago (notice the wall mural in the video?)

ANATOMY OF A MOHOP SHOE
HOW (TOGETHER) WE MAKE AN IMPACT [Click HERE for the long version]
- We recognize that American manufacturing improves our way of life.
- We are constantly developing best practices in production, keeping Mohop competitive internationally and reducing costs for you.
- As a woman-owned company, we aim to encourage girls and women to pursue STEM careers such as manufacturing
- We utilize the greenest materials and practices available.
- Social responsibility on a global scale is important to us, too. We've partnered with Jhoole, a non-profit in Maheshwar, India to create recycled-saree ties for our shoes. Proceeds benefit women and children with the goal of ending the cycle of poverty through education.
HOW YOU CAN HELP!
We appreciate your support in any shape or form - it is essential to our success! If you’re not ready to contribute at the moment, please share the word (or video!) via tweet/link/pigeon letter/message in a bottle/blog reference/website shoutout or any other means of conveying our campaign to the world. MANY THANKS!
USE OF FUNDS
We intend to use the first $50,000 of funding to obtain two new pieces of core equipment, namely:
- A big brother to help Bunker, our old trusted CNC (Computer Numerical Control) machine that Annie uses to shape wooden soles. Bunker has been fantastic in making small batches of shoes, but a Las Vegas factory requires a much bigger bot!
- A big sister for Lucille, a snappy little laser that cuts soft materials like rubber and fabric with enviable precision. A faster, more capable laser = more shoes get delivered to you, sooner!
Any amount of overfunding will be used to support ongoing factory operations and to purchase supplies for more fun, inspiring, comfy sandals. You, as our backers, can make shoes and dreams come to life!
Risks and challenges
This is not our first rodeo.
Mohop has been making shoes for over eight years. We have a very sound plan for this project based on years of personal experience in footwear manufacturing as well as the mentorship of people with very large brains. We also know that things will not go exactly to our carefully thought-out plans. When it comes to a project as complex as manufacturing, there are countless moving parts and it's practically guaranteed that "unknown unknowns" will be encountered.
Due to our proprietary combination of cutting-edge technology and traditional artisanal techniques, we have developed a completely unique production process. That sort of mold-breaking innovation means that we have encountered a vast array of problems through the years. The fact that we're still here - and in fact, can't keep up with demand - shows that we have the resolve and wherewithal to overcome even the most menacing of obstacles (and boy, do we have some stories!).
That said, while there will surely be a bump or two in the road, we really don't anticipate any insurmountable obstacles with this project. We have experience with every aspect of this endeavor and we have a team that's beyond thrilled to make the magic happen. Via updates on Kickstarter, as well as Mohop's Facebook and Twitter accounts, we'll be keeping everyone informed throughout the progress our new manufacturing line in Las Vegas as well as the production of your pledge rewards.
Kickstarter does not allow multiple pledges, so the best method we can currently think of would be for you to increase your pledge amount to reflect the total of what you'd like. For example, if you'd like lows ($100) plus saree ties ($20), please pledge $120. For international orders, only the shipping charge for the heavier item will apply.
When you receive the survey on January 25 (assuming the project is funded - *PLEASE SHARE!*), note in the comments section which additional items you'd like as well as any details for the request (i.e., size and style if you ordered additional shoes, color if you'd like saree ties, etc.) We'll contact you if we need any further clarification.
