Welcome to another update detectives! There’s many mysteries to solve and little time, so let’s dive right in!

WHAT HAVE YOU BEEN UP TO THE LAST TWO MONTHS?

So many things!

Too many things!!!

SCNTFC!!!
SCNTFC!!!

I’m so so SO excited to announce that we’ve brought SCNTFC onboard to create the music for Jenny LeClue! You may know his work from the soundtracks of Oxenfree or Old Man’s Journey. He’s wildly talented and a nice guy too! If you don't know his music, check it out here: https://scntfc.bandcamp.com

Brand new gameplay!

For this month’s update I’m going to share complete gameplay footage of a scene from chapter 1. There’s nothing spoiler-heavy here.. but be warned, if you want a fresh play through, overt thine eyes!

Localization

In addition we are going to be able to launch the game with localization! Optional voice acting will still come later, but at least we are able to launch in several languages from the get-go!

Other things

-Finalized all dialogue

-Designed all detective style portraits

-Started laying out journal case notes

-Started building touch controls and optimizing for all platforms

-Lots of play testing and bug fixes

WHAT’S LEFT?

-Finish laying out journal case notes

-Finish creating and implementing sound design

-Create and implement original music ( by SCNTFC! )

-Preparing content for translation team

-Preparing tools for modifying puzzles and art for other languages

-Lots of play testing, bug fixing, and polishing!

The game is shaping up to be an 8-10 hour experience, and we can't wait to share all our hard work with you later this year!

Thank you!

-Joe, Ben, and Melissa

and last, but not least...

Howdy Detectives!

There are so many case notes in this update, so let’s dive right in!

WHAT WE WORKED ON

SO MUCH!

I recently totaled up our scene count, and it's a whopping 44! And that's not including some scenes that have multiple combined scenes, SHEESH!

We've knocked out quite a few of those scenes, and have been playtesting other scenes, bug fixing and noting tweaks. It's been really nice to be able to play whole sections of the game in order and feel the narrative and gameplay flow. It's also been great to watch playtesters reactions to witnessing the story unfold for the first time! Oh, and we also showed new gameplay at GDC thanks to Double Fine and their lovely Day of The Dev booth. And now for the fun stuff...

Jenny LeClue is about mystery and atmosphere. But at it's core it's about family, friends, and dealing with loss. In short: I hope the duality works, and people are intrigued by the mystery and stay for the feels!

SO WHAT’S LEFT?

Sound design, Music, Case notes, Finalizing Sticker Collectibles, Hidden Objects, Crypt Scene ( conversation animation, player choices, finalizing cutscenes ), Switch porting, Bugs and polishing ( lots of that ). There is still much to do, but we can see the light at the end of the tunnel!

That's all I have for now, so I leave you with this picture of our dog Tilly, =]

Hello gumshoes,

We're creeping our way towards launch! The closer we get, the more finite these updates are going to become. So let's dive right in!

WHAT DID YOU WORK ON?

-Took some holiday time with family... was very good for the soul ( but also got a cold ).

-BETA Testing continued - bringing in useful feedback and bugs to fix. It's been scary, but really good for Ben and I to see other people play the game and to know that the overall game-feel is working and people are getting it! SUPER EXCITING!

-Squashed a ton of bugs!

-Completed a bunch of secret stuff done that I can't mention

-Weekly play testing started - Every Thursday we are working through scenes to polish, tweak flow, gameplay, and try to find as many bugs as we can before release.

-Rewrote and edited dialogue in several scenes

-Character animations - added a ton more ( Jenny must have well over 100 animations by now )

-Implemented custom cutscenes for multiple scenes

-Implemented alternate controller input scheme for the lake level

Enough words, bring on the pictures!

-All scenes - Weekly Playtesting, polishing, implementing lots of miscellaneous bits and bobs

-Broader Playtesting - focused group sessions of entire sections of the game

-Remaining Sound Design & Music

-Launch logistics

As always, thank you for all your patience and super kind words of support!

Hello gumshoes! SO MUCH has happened in just the past two months. We’ve been working non-stop, so I’m going to be brief and just describe the very high level of the 10,000 things we did.

First,

THE GOOD NEWS

  • We knocked out art, animation, code, and even some sound design for several scenes.
  • We implemented the full pause and menu systems
  • We built the sound system, complete with smart switching music looper system.
  • And, last, but not least, we hit a pretty big milestone. So today, we are sending out keys for...

THE BETA TEST!

The fully animated menu features Jenny front and center =]

Today we are sending out the private beta, so if you were at the $45+ backer level you should receive a message with your Steam key and beta info. Please be sure to fill out the survey after playing the game ( or if for some reason it doesn’t work at all for you )! And if you don't see the email, be sure to check your junk in case it got filtered out.

Now,

THE BAD NEWS

My mom passed away just a few weeks ago after several years of struggling with dementia and other health issues. I have been working so much I haven’t had much time to process her passing. It’s something that we’ve known was coming for several years, but it doesn’t make it any less hard.

Time is the longest distance between two places
Time is the longest distance between two places

I’m going to be dedicating the game to her, as she was a huge influence in my life and was incredibly supportive in my development as an artist. The premise of our game is a big spooky mystery, but the heart of the story is about relationships. In particular, the relationship between Jenny and her mom, which is a strong, stubborn bond. I’ve drawn from my relationship with my mom for these characters, and she would have it no other way.

She is already deeply missed.

So to bring things back to a slightly lighter place, here’s a slew of new content from the progress we’ve made in the past two months!

FUN STUFF

SO WHAT’S NEXT?

There’s still quite a few scenes to finish, particularly the ending scenes. There’s a few big conversations that we need to finalized writing for. Lots of playtesting, polishing, and much sound design remains.

I'm going to take a week off around Christmas to spend time with my family and process a bit, but otherwise we are full sprint into the home stretch. We also have a big announcement coming next week, as we will be sharing a new trailer of the game on the Kinda Funny Games Showcase ( Saturday December 8th ). So keep an eye out! =]

That’s all for this mega update detectives. I’m signing off for now, with much love, hugs, and thank you for your continued support!

-Joe

Hi detectives!

Fall is nearly here, and hopefully the hot weather is on the way out. So let's dive right into the giant pile of leaves that is this month's update!

IN CLOSING

There’s two other things I wanted to mention before ending this upate.

1. I am now doing bi-monthly updates until the launch as this gives me more time to work on the game, and less annoying posts for you. If you want more frequent updates, you can follow along on Facebook and Twitter.

2. We are starting to get closer to launch, and so I’ve brought an indie PR team onboard to help us figure out and navigate release planning and marketing efforts for launch. We want to have the best shot we can at a successful launch, and getting professional help and advice is part of that process.

Thank you again for your patience and support, really hoping you’ll love what we’re putting together. Alright, I’ve got to get back to work! Until next time super sleuths!
