About

Park-a-Dot is a simple yet modern solution for something you do every day. This patent pending product was created to eliminate the frustrations faced while parking in your own garage and was born out of a need to find a reliable parking aid to solve the shortcomings of other existing solutions.

Here's a short demonstration of Park-a-Dot in action from the driver's point of view:

Park-a-Dot vs. Existing Solutions
Park-a-Dot vs. Existing Solutions

What's that? You already have parking sensors built into your vehicle's front bumper? Well, so did my wife when she accidentally drove into my tool chest! Those sensors are a great feature, but as you probably already know, once you are close to an object they provide a solid beep no matter if you're an inch or a foot away from impact. This system can be misleading when trying to determine how far to pull into your garage.

Park-a-Dot takes the guesswork out of parking by working with your garage door’s existing safety sensor. By law since the early 1990’s all garage door openers have built-in sensors to prevent accidents from occurring. The main function of the sensor is to ensure that there is nothing blocking the path of the door as it closes. In order for the door to continue closing, the invisible infrared beam from the emitting safety sensor must be seen by the receiving safety sensor. If the infrared beam is interrupted, the garage door will reverse and not close.

Using this technology already in place, Park-a-Dot was designed to sense the infrared beam from the safety sensor. Once your vehicle’s bumper is in safely past the door and the Park-a-Dot is sensing an unobstructed infrared beam from the safety sensor, it automatically projects a red dot on the wall in front of you. This red dot indicates that your vehicle is clear of the garage door and in your preferred parking position. When you see the dot, stop in your spot!

You can rest assured that Park-a-Dot will not compromise your existing safety sensors since it does not interfere with your garage door's electronics or emit any infrared beams.

Park-a-Dot’s compact design makes it easy to set up and start using right away. In 20 minutes or less you can install the Park-a-Dot with 3 easy steps.

Once you install Park-a-Dot, confirm that it's positioned properly with a slow test drive by parking your vehicles. When you are satisfied with your preferred parking positions and no further adjustments are needed, you can discreetly secure any excess wiring to your liking using the installation hardware provided.

One Park-a-Dot kit will be needed per garage space and will work in any common arrangement including a single, double or multi-car garage by mounting it on a nearby wall or garage rail.

Single garage:

 Double garage:

 Multi-car garage:

To ensure Park-a-Dot will work for you, your garage must have the following:

  • A Chamberlain, Craftsman, or LiftMaster garage door opener
  • Safety sensors like the picture below, which are standard on all compatible brand garage doors dating back to 1997
  • A wall or another garage door adjacent to the desired parking spot, as shown in the various garage arrangements above

Special situations:

  • Extra consideration is needed for vehicles with accessories protruding past the rear bumper like a hitch or spare tire
  • If you prefer backing into your garage, the Park-a-Dot will work as long as you can view the red dot from your side mirror
  • In multi-car garages the shape of certain large SUV's may block the Park-a-Dot receiver associated with the adjacent garage space from communicating with the corresponding safety sensor, however minor adjustments of the Park-a-Dot positions can help resolve this issue

Park-a-Dot is a product of M.O. Gizmo LLC and is in no way affiliated with any of the companies mentioned on this page.

By supporting Park-a-Dot on Kickstarter, not only will you help validate that a year’s worth of time and energy spent to perfect this garage parking sensor was worth it, but more importantly your support will help fund the initial tooling costs and regulatory testing fees associated with scaling up the manufacturing of this product.

As a first-time entrepreneur, the journey to come this far has been full of risks and challenges. It is now the excitement of launching this product on Kickstarter that energizes me to see that this project succeeds with the support of backers like you. I’m finally ready to take this novel gadget originally created as a hobby to the next level and know that the Kickstarter community will appreciate the convenience of Park-a-Dot, the simplicity of use, and its reliability as your preferred parking aid!

Risks and challenges

With any Kickstarter campaign there are risks and challenges that may occur. Naturally as a mechanical engineer by trade who used to work at a large manufacturing facility where every day I was faced with the unknown, I made sure to understand the risks and challenges associated with Park-a-Dot early on.

One of the challenges to produce Park-a-Dot as a safe and reliable product is to get the necessary approvals from the FCC and FDA so that the micro-controller and laser used in this device meet regulatory requirements. This all means that you can be confident that your Park-a-Dot will be a product produced to the highest quality standards possible.

While many prototypes have been created and tested, scaling to a mass-produced product has its own challenges. Fortunately the two main components of Park-a-Dot, the electronics and plastic parts, have been reviewed and quoted by manufacturers to ensure a simple and straightforward product delivery.

Lastly, many projects on Kickstarter are works of professional product designers and serial crowdfunding extraordinaire so there is an inherent challenge to overcome as a first time inventor and creator. I am confident that my strong work ethic, desire to succeed and personal commitment to Park-a-Dot will allow me to overcome any unforeseen problems and mitigate the risk with bringing this product to your garage!
