India has the Taj Mahal. Berkeley has Moe's.
- San Francisco Chronicle.
Moe's Books is launching this Kickstarter to fund the publishing of Radical Bookselling: a Life of Moe Moskowitz, the founder of Moe’s Books. We're bringing together book lovers from everywhere to make this project happen and we would love your support.
Moe embodied radical politics, radical theater, and radical bookselling. He put fun into being an intellectual and helped democratize literacy.
This colorful volume brings into view this larger-than-life character, his epic store, and his place in Berkeley’s history.
The book, designed by Gregoire Vion, will include over 150 images, posters of events, important happenings on Telegraph Ave in the turbulent 60s, and Moe with his trademark cigar.
In Radical Bookselling we will share for the first time ephemera from Moe's riveting life before he came to Berkeley in 1955. The book will also contain an essay about Moe as Ubu Roi, the character that he played in the first American production at the Living Theater in New York City in 1945, and another explaining a customer's pivotal experience in the iconic store that Moe began building 1959.
Moe’s Books has published and produced many things, but never a book about its founder. In our 55 years, we have supported many authors, dreamers, entrepreneurs, poets, and musicians. We have a long history of designing posters and poetry broadsides which we have usually given as gifts to our devoted followers.
Please check out our offerings and make a contribution today. Share this with your friends. Thanks so much! Read More Books.
Check out our rewards which include books, poems, posters, cigars, parties and your name in our book about Berkeley's radical history.
At the $25 contribution level you'll be charged an additional $5 for shipping. At the end of the campaign you will have the option of picking up Radical Bookselling from the store in person if you wish. The shipping cost will be reimbursed at your request.
About Moe's Books
Moe’s has been a world famous destination for book lovers since 1959. We have hundreds of thousands of titles in our ever-changing stock. We buy, sell and trade books all day, every day and we always pay fair prices for quality books.
Since our inception back in the heyday of the Beatnik era, Moe's Books has managed to become more than just a great bookstore - it has achieved the rarified status of a beloved landmark institution as well. Situated just four blocks from the University of California campus, Moe's has managed to mirror the often turbulent and triumphant times that have come to epitomize all that is exciting and unique about Berkeley. In an environment where the only the chain stores seem to survive, Moe's continues to grow and flourish, with new generations of customers discovering the joy of almost unlimited access to the greatest of the written word, in a store that thrives on its independence.
About Project Creators
Doris Jo Moskowitz owns and operates Moe's Books. "Perhaps I am a fool to sell books in the year 2016, but I am a devoted custodian of my parents iconic shop which I think of as more of a sibling than a business."

Gregoire's work has garnered various awards and has been featured in Print, How, Communication Arts, and other graphic trade publications, also in exhibitions at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts of San Francisco and the Massachusetts College of Art and Design.
