News from Paris! Monolith Conan Board Game Cross-Over!

Posted by Chris Birch, Modiphius (Creator)

We're putting out full details tomorrow but we can confirm that we're working on a major cross-over book with Monolith who produced the massive Conan Board Game!

Today I was in Paris with Fred and Leo from Monolith discussing the plans and I took them through a game of Robert E. Howard's Conan Roleplaying Game with a very nasty twist - they were versus Thog - stats coming tomorrow for you! We also had Cedric the owner of Dernier Bar Avant La Fin Du Monde - the awesome geek bar in Paris - so it was an all star game!

Check out the video below, tomorrow we'll be sending out the full announcement and lots more details as well as a video with Fred and Leo talking about what they thought of the game. Monolith will be sending out info to their huge customer list and we'll be creating a pledge aimed at their fans as well.

As you can see I used some draft prints of our tiles and their miniatures to show how they can be combined. Of course you don't have to use minis with the RPG, some people like to use them for character's placement in certain key encounters or through the whole course of the game or you can simply play in your imagination!

MONOLITH UNLOCKED! Even more exciting! We're confirming this book will be produced as part of the Kickstarter so it is now in print as part of the Hoard, Secrets and Treasure' pledges, plus in PDF as part of pledges with 'all the unlocked books in PDF'.

It will be a £15 112 page full colour hardback Add On and will provide lots of great content for fans of both the RPG and the boardgame. We'll be talking about it in more detail in tomorrow's update so watch out and unveiling a new pledge including the tiles and this book.

I will also have the full stats for our first cosmic horror - Thog - tomorrow, another except from the Bestiary.

that's true, introducing a language barrier when locally looking for players (in house or outside :) ) might not be an advantage, in particular if you want to motivate them to try something new.

    2. Jacques Evrard on

@Asgo - Thank you for your excellent advice.

I agree completely. I still remember the problems when the first D&D BECMI boxes were translated in French in the 1980's: I had to buy the original boxes to understand something … After that, the only games that I have bought in French are games originally published in French or in French + English/other language (such as Memoir '44 & Monolith Conan).

The problem is my eventual players (mostly my grand children - yes I'm somewhat old!) not at ease with English for now …

    3. Jacques Evrard on

@Chris Birch - Thank you for your kind replies to my various questions!

Another "players language solution" allowing me (and maybe others) to maybe pledge for the books in print could be to buy only the Player's Guide in French/other language if/when it is released.
Though it won't help support the translated edition …
And with all the games I already have and the Monolith horde coming, where to put all these marvels?!

    4. Asgo

while I can understand the preference of localized versions, I myself usually don't mind when game are produced only or at least mainly in English, in particular when it is an ongoing product line. The disadvantages are usually more numerous and influential than having something in my native language. The inevitable delays between original and translated products, the good chance that not all will be available in translated form, and bad experiences with the quality of translations made me vary of them. Aside from that, mixing languages is problematic at best, in particular with a game where keeping terminology straight in one language is enough work. :)

    5. Chris Birch, Modiphius 7-time creator on

@Jacques - yes but we're discussing it with partners and will announce later on , I would expect for 2017 given the amount of work involved and they can't start until we complete the core book. YEs I think get all the pdf's now then you can pick up the print editions later when they come.

    6. Jacques Evrard on

About Monolith: as chris Birch said!

    7. Jacques Evrard on

Around 4K+ (25%+) of the Monolith Conan backers were French speaking people (from France, Belgium, Switzerland & Quebec), so the question of a French translation project could have some importance for them …

This is my case anyway. I intend to pledge for the Conqueror's Collection and, probably, everything in PDF. Sure, I would also like the books, tiles, cards & screen in print, but not two times, in English AND in French (neither my wallet nor my house are big enough!).

So, will some books be translated in French?
Surely, not the whole line will be translated?
What are the books with more chances to be translated? (probably the core & player books?)

In short, does the project of buying everything in PDF now and the translated books later have sense?

      Any answer will be appreciated.

    8. Chris Birch, Modiphius 7-time creator on

@krzystof - I know they're working hard to get stuff out of the factory but it's certainly a mammoth project and once you get your boxes you're going to be bowled over by the value and cool minis.

Of course the great thing is Monolith will promote us to a lot of potential backers that will help unlock more books for all of us :)

    9. Loig

@Krzysztof Babilon: that is a bit of a mean comment towards Monolith. How many 16k+ backers projects with 3.7M+ of budget have you run before?

    10. Ron Niabati on

Krzysztof Babilon: Monolith is not the one doing anything in this case. Modiphius is creating the book and delivering it. It's more for getting the word out to other potential backers who like Conan.

    11. Krzysztof Babilon on

Its kind of meh.... I wouldn't partner up w Monolith cause only thing they do is takeing backers money and delaying stuff.. so.. I dont think that partnering w this guys is a thing to be proud of

Very interesting. As a monolith backer I am excited to see what this means. Looks like the rpg sessions are going to be very tactile. Bring on Thog I say!

    13. Peter Rodway on

I missed the Monolith KS :( So p&&d off....If you could get the Monolith Minis added to this we are talking!!!!

    14. Chris Challacombe

And now it's way too late to back anyway!!

    15. Chris Challacombe

When I said gm I mean the game is not vs or co-op, it's 1 v many. My group have a few games like that but rarely play them. I was v tempted by the ks, as it was v good value, but I knew I wouldn't play it.

    16. Jacques Evrard on

WOW! Congratulations! Just what I was waiting for!

As a Conan board game backer, I will receive 372 beautiful figures (including some scenery accessories, plus several magnificent 60 x 70 cm game-boards, and the rest of the board game materials), so my interest in Modiphius Conan KS is still growing …

I had almost decided what I am going to pledge, but things might get more complicated now. I'll wait & see.

For those interested, Fred is Fred Henry, author of Monolith Conan board game ($3.7+ million KS) and Leo is Leonidas Vesperini, one of the Monolith community managers.

I hope Monolith will once again promote Modiphius Conan KS in an update to their 16K+ backers.

      @Chris Challacombe
To be exact, in Monolith boardgame, the "Overlord" is NOT a GM, he plays against the other players, trying to win the game.

    17. Chris Birch, Modiphius 7-time creator on

@Asgo - well you have to start somewhere. We've found we sometimes go over for good reason, so you might find you get a 120 or 128 page book for the same price. It's down to each book but we set that as the budget. Sometimes we'll do a big unlock of bonus content to bump it up by a lot.

      It's a fair size though :-)

    18. Asgo

sounds like a gread idea to combine the two, but I have ask, is 112 a lucky number or why have all supplements that page count? :)

    19. Johannes 'Waldgeist' Rebhan on

If you can, get Monolith to announce your sourcebook on their Kickstarter. They had lots and lots of backers who might be interested in Conan 2d20 too, but the latest "inclusion" was just a sidetone in a general news post. I am sure many people didn't even open it.

    20. Chris Birch, Modiphius 7-time creator on

@Douglas - we recorded the audio so will try to edit that tomorrow and get it up!

    21. Shane Mclean

Awesome news! Man, my Hoard pledge is getting better and better every day.

      Eric Holweck

Awesome update! But now I won't know which pledge to choose between "all books in print without Conqueror" and "boardgame Conan backer", lol, so let's see them both. :)

    23. Douglas Justice on

I would to see some full length actual plays! Looks fantastic

    24. Missing avatar

      Thomas Lund Simonsen on

Awesome! I'm really excited about this!

    25. Morgan Stjernstrom on

      Sounds soooooo awesome!!:)

    26. RDP

Man I'm wishing I had been part of that Monolith KS as well. Great cross-over idea though!

    27. Chris Birch, Modiphius 7-time creator on

@Chris - the bonus is here you're getting a complete adventure plus new stats and bonus content!

    28. Chris Challacombe

kinda wish i had KSed that game but i don't like GM required boardgames. If i want to GM, i'll do RPG! shame, it had so many figures as freebies...but i would never have played it.
