The World of Kull - King of Atlantis with Justin Sweet & Chris Gruber!

Posted by Chris Birch, Modiphius (Creator)

We can announce that Modiphius will be producing The World of Kull - King of Atlantis, a brand new source book for Robert E. Howard’s Conan Roleplaying Game - Adventures in an Age Undreamed Of supported by the stunning art of Justin Sweet as well as contributions from Howard scholar & Kull expert Chris Gruber!

Long before the time of Conan… came Kull, King of Valusia...

"Of that epoch known by the Nemedian chroniclers as the Pre-Cataclysmic Age, little is known except the latter part, and that is veiled in the mists of legendry. Known history begins with the waning of the Pre-Cataclysmic civilization, dominated by the kingdoms of Kamelia, Valusia, Verulia, Grondar, Thule and Commoria." The Hyborian Age - Robert E. Howard

The World of Kull - King of Atlantis, is a major cross-over book for Robert E. Howard's Conan Roleplaying Game and will feature the art of world-renowned fantasy artist and Kull specialist Justin Sweet, who won the Jack Gaughan award, has worked for Black Isle Studios and Wizards of the Coast, as well as producing concept art for the movies Prince Caspian, Snow White and the Huntsman and The Avengers.

This sourcebook is the first of its kind: an official guide to roleplaying in the antediluvian age of Conan’s spiritual forefather, the Atlantean barbarian-king known as Kull. Contained within these pages are descriptions of the Thurian continent as it was a hundred thousand years ago, long before Conan’s own Hyborian Age. With this volume as their companion, heroes can visit Lemuria, Grondar, Atlantis, the Pictish Isles, Commoria, and the mightiest kingdom of them all… Valusia, City of Wonders. Visit the House of the Thousand Mirrors, seek wisdom at the depths of Forbidden Lake, battle the Skull of Silence, sail with Lemurian pirates to the World’s Edge, debate philosophy with Delcardes’ cat, or strive to claim the Topaz Throne!

Important characters of the age are described in detail, among them King Kull, his loyal ally Brule the Spear-Slayer, his Pictish advisor Ka-nu the Ancient, Chief Councilor Tu, the scholar Kuthulos, and a host of others. New monstrous creatures abound in this sourcebook, including the insidious Serpent Men and the strange and inhuman folk to the south. Also described are notable enemies who plague the age: the elder sorcerer Tuzun Thune as well as Kull’s greatest enemy, the immortal sorcerer Thulsa Doom.

Usable in tandem with Robert E. Howard’s Conan: Adventures in an Age Undreamed Of, this sourcebook contains alternate life paths, cultural backgrounds, magic, gods, and more, bringing Kull’s savage ancient world to life.

Justin Sweet joins a host of other incredible artists to illustrate this legendary tome in what promises to be the biggest ever line ups of artists for a roleplaying game. Written by a team including Jason Durall, Steffie de Vaan, Jack Norris and Richard August, with contributions by world-renowned Robert E. Howard scholars Jeffrey Shanks and Chris Gruber

Chris Gruber is an award-winning Howard scholar and expert on the Kull stories. Chris has been involved in Howard Studies for over a decade and has served on the review board for The Dark Man: The Journal of Robert E. Howard Studies since 2008. He has authored numerous award-winning essays, introductions, and reviews on Robert E. Howard and has appeared in publications such as Black Gate Magazine, The Cimmerian, REH: Two-Gun Raconteur, and Echos de Cimmerie. He was the editor of The Boxing Stories of Robert E. Howard from the University of Nebraska Press and the REH-inspired fiction anthology Dreams in the Fire, and the co-editor of the four-volume collection Fists of Iron by the REH Foundation Press.

The World of Kull - King of Atlantis will be presented as a lavish 112 page full color hardback and will feature as a later Stretch Goal in our campaign. However we are confirming that this supplement will be released in 2017 regardless of whether it is unlocked or not, and as such becomes part of the PDF Subscription pledge (and therefore in PDF for Hoards of Yezdigerd, Secrets of Mount Yishma and Treasure of Tranicos pledges).

Now on to editing that fun video ;-)

We also recorded our game session last night and I'll be editing this sound file together to make available as an example of play. I took the Thunder River scenario and improvised a hellish adventure for our new players...

@2Die10 Games - we're checking whether we can include Justin's art in the art book but other big name art drawn for the book will be for sure

    2. Lim Seng Kok

I thought there was nothing else you chaps could do to entice me to up my pledge. I thought wrong.

    3. 2Die10 Games on

Will the art book contain art from Kull - King Of Atlantis as well as the other source books for the game?

    4. Chris Birch, Modiphius 7-time creator on

@Glenn - dammnit just don't look at the next big updates then!

    5. Bill Winski on

Thanks for the update, Chris. That is extremely cool news; can't wait...
      You guys are awesome!

    6. Glenn Fleetwood on

Chris, after incorporating one or two observations my role play group made when we play tested into your innovative rules set, and THEN putting out his news, basically creating a sourcebook I always wanted to see done, but never in a month of Sundays thought would ever be made, I have to ask you to stop... because I don't have any more spare money to throw at you!

No plans for Solomon Kane. Our friends at Pinnacle are still very much in possession of that licence and we have no plans to take it over.

As for Bran Mak Morn, it's an interesting option, and it's been suggested in our writer's room, but it's not currently planned. We're so full up now that at best, it would be a project for later in 2017 (or beyond), but it's definitely worth considering.

@Chris - hmmm... more announcements... I also hope that one will be Bran Mak Morn.

    9. Peter Foxhoven on

@Chris Ah, I see. Thank you for clearing that up for me. This is super amazing!

Oooooooooo! I just made a little water. Can Bran MacMorn or Solomon Kane be waiting somewhere in the shadows?

@David - the rules haven't changed - Hoard' pledges get the print copy when it's unlocked or unveiled in the Stretch Goal graphics. That's our 'pledge' - that if we show the book in the Stretch Goal graphic then you're getting it in print. We've got more announcements like this coming for more books that will at least bump up the PDF Subscription value.

    12. Morgan Stjernstrom on

      @David Drage,
If you read Chris respons to Peter you can see that you will indeed get this if its unlocked or show in the graphic.

      Best regards.

    13. David Drage on

Hoard of Yezdigerd subscribers should get the print copy as well as the PDF.

Are we getting it, or have you changed the rules?

    14. Antonio Eleuteri on

Awesome! Any chance we can get Bran Mak Morn, too, pretty please? :D

    15. David Thomas on

I literally flipped out when I woke up and read this. It makes perfect sense, and yet I didn't expect it. Thanks so much!

I read The Shadow Kingdom before bed last night too!

    16. Chris Birch, Modiphius 7-time creator on

@Peter - they do if it's unlocked OR unveiled in the Stretch Goals. We're just announcing that it's happening at the moment.

    17. Cornelius, Wanderer of the Ringtail Fox on

Very awesome. Thanks you for much
@Peter - Only when it's announced as a stretch goal on the campaign page.

    18. Peter Foxhoven on
