Conan RPG Card Decks!

Posted by Chris Birch, Modiphius (Creator)

Tonight we're unveiling the Conan RPG card decks for the Kickstarter! These are not essential to play but they can be useful aids. Here's an example of the Creature & Character Card deck which is now a £12 Add On (€16 / $18). Remember these decks are free in PDF as part of the PDF Subscription whilst the Secrets of Mount Yishma & Treasure of Tranicos pledges get these in print too. We'll be showing off more of what the cards look like next week and there's a Print & PDF Bundle (all four decks) for £40 or £20 for just PDF.

Creature & Character Cards. Gamemasters will find this reference especially useful, a card deck with summarized information for foes and potential allies—human and otherwise—with game characteristics printed on one side and art on the reverse to inspire the players. Some of these cards represent minions, a lesser type of foe encountered in groups, others describe generic NPCs or creatures, and more describe particular individual NPCs from Conan’s world. This will be a high-quality poker-size cardstock, 54-card deck.

Sorcery Cards. Magic in the Hyborian Age is a dark and risky thing, coming at a terrible price. Conan himself shunned the use of sorcery, but players and gamemasters may not be so reluctant. This deck of cards prints critical information for each of the dread spells and rituals from the core rulebook for handy reference during play. High-quality poker-size cardstock, 54-card deck. A further deck will expand on this with cards for spells and rituals from the supplements.

Location Cards. Each of these cards covers a particular encounter location, providing a written description, potential hooks, potential inhabitants, and any specific rules that might apply. Each can provide a quick dramatic setting for a battle or pivotal moment in the story, allowing gamemasters to quickly introduce interesting locations at the draw of a card. High-quality poker-size cardstock, 54-card deck.

Story Cards. Even Robert E. Howard was not above using elements from one story in another, and gamemasters are encouraged to walk alongside him with these story cards. Each presents a potential plot element or sequence that can serve as the start of an adventure, the crux of the story, or can inspire encounters and plot twists aplenty. Gamemasters can use these as inspiration, or construct an adventure from whole cloth using these cards and a downloadable reference sheet. High-quality poker-size cardstock, 54-card deck.

We're also going to offer a bundle deal on these - get all four decks in print & PDF for £40 (saving £8) or get a PDF bundle of all four decks to print at home for £20.

We ran out of time today, so tomorrow lunchtime we have a big reveal, another book that will be joining the range, and another major artist for the line up! Watch this space...

@Ron - they are also found in the books - but this add more detail - descriptions of those example locations which aren't necessarily found in the books

@Derona - the plan is to have typical zones for a location on the back of the card, we might even do cards for the tiles with their zones on

    3. Matthew Widener on

      Awesome idea, Deron!

    4. RDP

      @deron- I love that idea!

    5. Douglas Justice on

I loved the creature cards from Warhammer 3rd! These look very similar. Good news!

I second the idea on a Zones deck. It would be very easy to plop such a card down next to a hand-drawn, ad hoc zone and everyone can see its modifiers.

@ Chris Birch: These are great!
Are the contents of the Location and Story cards also found in the core rule book and supplement books, or are they only to be found in the card decks?
      Thanks in advance.

    8. RDP

Adding cards tonight to my insane pledge! :)

@Chris yes they are sorry missed that

@Matthew - yes we do plan to add more decks later on. Actually the stat block was just a quick design job to give you an idea - it's a long way from final :-)

@Asgo - yes it will be taken from the core book and we'll planning an expansion deck to take in to account the supplements too

    10. Asgo

the creature card deck, does it contain the chars/npc from the core book, equivalent to the sorcery deck? and do you plan similar decks for the sourcebooks, e.g. skelos and beasts?

    11. Morgan Stjernstrom on

I immediately added funds for all decks. :)

    12. Netobvious

Very very nice idea. And it will surely get much appreciation from the often over-worked GMs and newbie players too.

    13. Matthew Widener on

Nice! Really looking forward to these. Does Modiphious ever add decks to their product lines down the road, to cover more NPCs, locations?

I'm just curious as to why the NPC stat blocks are split into:
      Agility Awareness Brawn
      Coord. Int. Pers. Will.

When switching Awareness and Coord. would be more logical...considering that the top row would then be all physical and the bottom mental, and would more easily help with sorting Wound and Trauma difficulty penalties. Is there a reason that I'm not seeing?

    14. Cornelius, Wanderer of the Ringtail Fox on

The cards are awesome, very great tool for the GM

    15. Douglas Bailey on

Wow; the cards look great. I'm feeling better about my Secrets of Mount Yishma [sic] pledge all the time.

are the pdfs included in hoard?
