Conan and the art of Carousing!
Hi everyone as we head towards our seafaring supplement, Conan the Pirate, here's another piece of inspirational art by artist Giogio Baroni plus we have some very apt insight in to the Carousing rules for the Conan Roleplaying Game.
Between Adventures. Adventurers cannot spend all their time delving into the darkest parts of the world, and battling what they find there. Even the most active and ambitious of souls need time to recover after a harrowing journey, and most are eager to spend their hard-won gold on food, companionship, and revelry. Even those of a grim and joyless disposition find the prospect of travelling during the colder months a daunting one, particularly without travelling companions to lighten a journey’s burden.
These activities create a perpetual cycle of adventure and carousing; an adventure may provide you with great wealth, but that wealth is soon spent when back in civilisation. That carousing sees an adventurer’s exploits recounted in grandiose and boastful tales, spreading his reputation and granting him ever greater renown, which in turn lead him to new adventures – willingly or otherwise. Whether destitute from weeks of revelry, impoverished by the work of cutpurses and thieves, hired by influential people to undertake some dangerous task, or simply because they have grown bored of a life of peace and luxury, adventurers soon find themselves back in the fray.
Carousing is all activities that the player characters undertake in the weeks, months, or even longer between adventures. During Carousing, characters take the opportunity to relax, recover from the rigors of a perilous journey, and enjoy the fruits of their labours. Characters can also use this time to plot, scheme, and make extravagant purchases. Carousing includes a degree of maintenance and upkeep – paying for food and lodgings during their downtime (to a degree appropriate to their fame and standing – nobody likes a miserly hero), and replenishing the supplies they used up during their adventures – and opportunity to spend the experience they’ve accrued, as well as recover from their injuries both physical and mental.
Beyond that, there are a variety of activities an adventurer can undertake during downtime, all of which are designed to part an adventurer from his hard-won coin. A Barbarian may spend his wealth on revelry, recounting tales of his exploits to any who will listen, with an eager wench upon his knee and a cup of ale in his mighty fist, his legend growing with every raucous night. The grizzled mercenary may turn her coin to the tools of her grim trade, seeking smiths to craft hardy new mail and a fine new sword. An adventurous scholar may spend a fortune to idle within halls of knowledge, deciphering ancient scrolls and poring over tomes to seek the truth of the universe. The ambitious may seek to bolster their fame and maybe even carve a place for themselves into the world. Each adventurer will find their own way to spend their coin, and there are plenty ways besides to lose it. After a few weeks or months, parted from their coin, adventurers set forth again into the wilds seeking coin and glory.
This just gives a few hints at what you can expect, different characters will experience Carousing in different ways and you'll find it's a great way to enjoy the time between adventures which so often just gets glossed over.
