The Body of the People

What Is It?

For this work of art, the artist has created a series of drawings of protesters and has compiled slogans, mission statements, and manifestos from the major protest movements in the United States today, including Democracy Spring, Democracy Awakening, and Black Lives Matter. From these documents, Baykal-Rollins with Rex Cadwallader on piano, vocals by Tiffany Jackson, Arti Dixon on drums, and Mike Asetta on bass, has created a surreal and poetic text that will be delivered as an address and sung by an opera singer for the duration of the performance.

Who Organized It?

The Museum of Contemporary Cuts (MoCC) is a nonprofit that organizes art projects in collaboration with a range of institutions nationally and internationally. It has collaborated with the Royal College of Art, NYU Steinhardt, The New School, but also with art fairs, biennials, like the Venice Biennial, and museums, like the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. It also collaborates with publishers like MIT Press in order to publish catalogs that document contemporary art. The Director of MoCC is also the editor in chief of a publication in the visual arts for MIT Press that is ranked top 20 in the world.

How Much Are We Looking For?

We are looking for supporters for this initiative who can help us to bridge the financial gap. We need $7,000 to complete this project and to ensure that we can deliver a truly exceptional experience. We have done all in our power to ensure that the event can take place but with your help we can make it a reality. The money will be spent on completing some of the artworks, ensuring that travel and accommodation are paid for and that we have enough to document the event itself, creating a record that we can archive which represents contemporary social struggles and sets the stage for a re-thinking and analysis of what society means and what ‘the body of the people’ stands for, in a political moment in which larger strata of society are disenfranchised, disconnected and isolated both financially and politically.

What If We Get More?

$20,000

Well it would be incredible if we were to reach our $7,000 mark. If we were to get more, e.g. $20,000 the Museum of Contemporary Cuts would pledge to spend the money on another artwork here in the Boston area. We already have the artist lined up and the artwork is rather exciting since is another public performance this time in the Boston Common.

$30,000

If we were to reach the $30,000 mark we would realize a new artwork in another city. MoCC has two projects lined up that we would like to realize one in New York City and one in Washington DC. $30,000 would allow us to realize one of these artworks/performances in New York.

$50,000

MoCC would be able to do artworks in Boston, New York and Washington DC. We would have an artwork that would surprise and stun you that we are planning to realize in Washington DC.

Over $50,000

We have two projects that cost around $38,000 each so, if it were to happen, that you liked this particular project and you would want to see artworks and performances that address more closely the issues related to today's social divide, or if you are just interested in seeing artworks that cross boundaries and attempt to find a different way of representing the world we live in, we are certainly ready for that. All the money that we collect would be reinvested in the production and organization of art.

Risks and challenges

The project is an inclusive project and as such we hope to have enough people who will register and participate. Since this is a participatory project in which the audience is part of the artwork itself, the danger is not to have enough people to fill up the venue.

We are addressing the problem by making sure that as many people as possible know about The Body of the People and that they register at: http://osmhsept29-16.bpt.me

In fact, although the event is free of charge, the audience will have to register to attend.

The Old South Meeting House is an important historical national venue and we need to ensure that people are respectful of its heritage.
