About

Ahoy there! Thank you so much for boarding our Kickstarter campaign! It’s our very first voyage out on this (or any) crowdfunding platform so we’re a little nervous but hopefully we’ll all get our sea legs soon…

Co-presented with Tobacco Factory Theatres, and with the support of the Arts Council England,  our project is a fully immersive, accessible, promenade performance of Moby Dick, which will take place on board Brunel’s SS Great Britain this August. Adapted from Herman Melville’s classic American novel, Moby Dick or The Whale we’ll take you on a fast-paced journey following one man’s fatefully obsessive pursuit of the legendary white whale.

The story of Moby Dick (in a nutshell)

Herman Melville’s great American novel tells the story of schoolmaster turned sailor Ishmael who joins a whaling ship sailing from Nantucket, Massachusetts. The disparate crew are suspicious of both the newcomer and the ‘savage’ harpooner Queequeg.

As they journey further into the Pacific, friendships are forged and rivalries formed as the whalers realise their fate is in the hands of Captain Ahab and his reckless hunt to kill Moby Dick.

Our story

Darkstuff Productions is the lovechild of bromance between Simon Harvey Williams and Phil John, originally fellow Bristol Old Vic box office workers who in 2009 dreamed of changing the way theatre was written and produced across Bristol.

Since those heady hazy days we’ve been creating and producing new writing in diverse and unusual venues across Bristol.  A church crypt, a city farm, the famous and dearly departed Bristol Bierkeller. Doing things a little differently is in Darkstuff Productions D.N.A, like unleashing audiences backstage to explore unseen areas of a theatre with a madman as a guide; or inviting guests along to (intentionally) disastrous wedding parties aboard a boat. Actually, it turns out wedding receptions done (deliberately) badly prove popular. We performed this particular tragedy/comedy over two seasons aboard the good ship Matilda. We’ve worked with some amazingly talented people, brilliant individuals who work in Bristol. To list them all would take up all the text here but they include director Anna Girvan, director Nancy Medina, director/writer Matt Grinter and musician and sound designer Daniel Greensmith. We've created 12 shows, given more than 100 performances, and worked in 8 (soon to be 9), often 'alternative', locations across the city.

All of this we have done for free or near as dammit, on a profit share basis. Simply because we love entertaining people and we love producing shows that are a little different, a little darker than the traditional theatre going experience allows for….

What your money will pay for

To celebrate our tenth year in existence we decided it was time to pay the fine creative talents that pour themselves into the shows we produce a living wage. In order to do this we have secured funding from the good people at Arts Council England which is of course, ace.....(geddit?!)

However that doesn't cover everything so here we are, talking to you to see if you could spare us a few quid to help make sure that artists, designers and producers get a little bit of recompense for their work.

Specifically...

Your money will help to pay for:

  • Researching and locating the story
  • All the producing tasks that go on behind the scenes to make the space for beautiful art to happen in (e.g. logistics, planning, organising, emailing, more emailing, begging people for money, scheduling meetings/auditions/rehearsals, liaising with venue and partners, being funny on social media )
  • Print design and production (flyers, brochure etc)

The thing is we're not a one-hit wonder. We've been around for ages and we're here to stay, but we've got big ideas - of which the great white whale is just the beginning.

Your money, your investment in us now will also contribute to the further development of Moby Dick - by which we mean we're aiming on taking this leviathan on tour next year. Your support will enable us to showcase the talent of the Southwest on a national level. Our dream is that you, lovely lovely people, have a hand in taking a product proudly made in Bristol to the rest of U.K and ... beyond!

Risks and challenges

The show is going to happen and we've done the main job of making sure the people front and centre in this show will get paid as you would expect. Your money will however ensure that the people behind the scenes, including the good folk of darkstuff towers core production team, will be kept in nutritionally sufficient morsels of food, like peanut butter sandwiches. Because, really, who needs to see another starving writer weeping in the wings of a good show?
