Chasing Moby Dick to Chicago for CMTF

Five years ago Ed Bryan was inspired to write a musical play based on Herman Melville’s “Moby Dick,” and since then he has been pursuing the project as if it were his own white whale. A year later, William Berry got on board to compose the musical score and orchestration for this project. Early in the voyage, there were a couple of table readings to assess the script and music completed at the time. In April of 2019, with partial support of a SAGA grant from Spokane Arts, Spokane Civic Theatre helped mount a four-show staged reading, directed by Jean Hardie, in order to evaluate and hone the show even further. For that production, the script and music was complete, it was done off-book and costumed, and it was quite successful, selling out all four performances.

Based on feedback from that presentation, there has been a process of cutting, refining, and rewriting parts of the script and music to make further improvements. Moby Dick – A Musical was submitted to the Chicago Musical Theatre Festival, which presents all-new musicals every year as part of Chicago Theatre Week, and we were accepted. What a great honor, and what a wonderful opportunity to take our show to the next level and have it seen by audiences from all over, not to mention exposure to people in the world of theater business and production!

The challenge to this opportunity is needing to produce 5 shows in Chicago in February of 2020, casting and rehearsing in Chicago, and getting our sets and costumes there. This will involve our key people in Spokane flying and driving with a trailer back and forth multiple times, and lodging for our crew in the Windy City. We are securing funding from several sources, including our cut of ticket sales in Chicago, but for this Kickstarter campaign we are asking for $5,000 to help cover the cost of travel and lodging.

Risks and challenges

The odds for getting a new piece of musical theater on the stage are near zero, and we have been amazed and overwhelmed each step of the way when the next door opened for us. Amazing support from Spokane Civic Theatre, Spokane Arts, volunteers, actors, friends, all apparently rowing in the same direction. When we applied for Chicago Musical Theatre Festival we knew we were aiming high, and when they invited us, literally the first note I typed to the gang was, "Yay! Oh crap!" Cast from here, from there, how much for plane tickets, where do we stay, putting a show on in Chicago? We have to say yes - the opportunity is too great - but between finding rehearsal spaces, not enough rehearsal time, running out of gas in Montana, there are unlimited ways to crash and burn. We are organized and resourceful - the AirBNB may have us all sleeping in one room again, we may lose committed cast members to the flu, however many integrated parts there are to putting on a large musical with a cast of 20 halfway across the country - but the show will go on! We refuse to accept the odds.
