Because everyone loves a food truck, and everyone deserves healthy, affordable food... no matter where they live.


Our goal is to raise enough money to purchase and retrofit a 25-foot school bus, convert it to run on biofuel, and have the whole shebang up and making market stops and school visits around Washington, DC in early summer 2011. The Mobile Market will be where food is needed -- in low-income neighborhoods known as "food deserts" -- bringing healthy, local food to the places people naturally gather. And we need YOU to help make it happen!


Imagine a brightly painted school bus running on recycled cooking oil and retrofitted with wooden crates bursting with fresh, local fruits and vegetables, eggs, cheeses, and humanely-raised meats. We’re collaborating with local farmers and communities across the region to bring fresh food, recipe ideas, and nutrition information to schools and neighborhoods in a healthy variation on the trendy food truck. 

As we see it, a mobile fresh market is the most visible and direct way to navigate a number of urban spaces to get much-needed fresh food to people in the nation's capital. In addition to regular, weekly stops in Wards 5, 7, and 8, there will be opportunities for special visits to bring food and educational resources as well as special guests -- the farmers who grow our food, chefs who cook our food, and community leaders who support our food -- to schools, community centers, and other vibrant spaces to promote healthy food choices. We are committed to making healthy, fresh food affordable AND accessible, and as such we plan to offer as many payment options as possible, including SNAP, WIC, and FMNP vouchers. We need the community to pledge $15,000 by Earth Day (April 22), or no money changes hands and it gets a lot harder for us to get healthy food to folks who need it. 

BUT we are so confident that together we WILL do this, we are planning a blowout Beer and Barbecue Bash at the farm in May to celebrate... hope to see you there!!
