I am writing the book about a legendary Swedish reporter: Mr Tony Kaplan (1937-2010). Tony was the center of the Swedish entertainment in more than 50 years time, and he knew them all: Jan Malmsjö, Lill-Babs, Sammy Davis, Brenda Lee, Frank Sinatra, Edie Gormé, Liza Minnelli... you name them all.
Tony Kaplan's career started with a meeting with a young Pelé at a training site in Hindås, Sweden, merely days before the football world cup 1958. Then it went on and on and on until his tragic death in cancer in November 2010 at the age of 73.
Tony Kaplan was a true legendary reporter, maybe the last real classic with block and pen, dedicated to his work. "I'm working with news", he used to say, always at least one step ahead of his competitors.
I am writing the first biography of Tony Kaplan. I am writing it in Swedish. I believe that there's an interesting and important story to share and tell. I have talked to relatives, colleagues and friends to give the full picture of Tony Kaplan's life and work - from his first letter to the editor in 1954 to his last chronicle in 2010.
But to make the book real and printed I need your help and support. I am a freelance journalist myself and have to take all the costs by myself - for writing, layout, photograph rights and printing. I have tried to get publishers interested in the book, unfortunately without success.
BUT: Now I hope you are interested enough to help me. There are a couple of options for you that you can read about here at Kickstarter, and I may come up with more along the way.
The book is already written and a skilled designer is hired to work with the layout. I can tell you that it will be a fine volume. I am planning a rather small pressing in the first stage of about 100 copies, depending on how much funding I am able to get. I am convinced that together we can make the book about Tony Kaplan a great one and hopefully it will serve as inspiration for young reporters as well.
The book will be jammed with lots of pictures from Tony Kaplan's private archive. I have of course bought the rights to publish the images from several right holders.
So please back my project! Help me make this real and a real good one!
Risks and challenges
I am not sure that there are any real risks. The book's already written and the image rights are assured. What I hope for here is that you will be willing to take some of the costs for these rights, for my time and for the printing of the book.
