How It Started?
I've always had a passion for minimal and modern design and often find myself looking at things around me--imagining how they could be improved. I’ve had many ideas over the years, but never took them to the next level, until now.
I was inspired by the Kickstarter community and decided this would be a great opportunity to make one of my ideas a reality. My goal is to make cool products that other people will appreciate. I have no background in design, but luckily, I do have some basic knowledge and experience in manufacturing. After multiple brainstorming sessions with trusted sources who could help with the manufacturing, I decided to start MNMLIST as an outlet to create these products.
As a teenager I had an obsession with wallets and always tried different styles. As the years passed, it seems I always end up with a fat wallet that I never want to carry. I usually keep it inside my car door or backpack and only carry the necessary cash or cards needed in my pocket. So when starting MNMLIST, it was obvious that the first product I wanted to design was a wallet. There are a ton of options out there, but I wanted to put my own spin on the minimalist wallet.
I worked with my manufacturer to take my idea from a sketch and create what I envisioned for the wallet.
The Alumathin Wallet is made from lightweight aircraft-grade aluminum and can be anodized in 8 colors. I wanted it to be one-piece, and not a two-plate system like I had seen in the past. Two separate pieces are pressure sealed with a unique rivet system making the wallet a solid single piece that fully protects your cards. This also maintains the clean lines of the wallet. The challenge then was figuring out how to hold the cards without them falling out. After multiple tests and trial and error, we successfully created a unique interior design that will hold 1 card, or up to 6 cards without them falling out. The cards slide in easily and out smoothly, whenever you need to access them.
Next, I wanted my wallet to securely hold cash for quick access--similar to a money clip. I didn't want to have to fold the cash over into a small bundle. To accomplish this, I incorporated a silicone band to go around the entire wallet. The band gives the ability to easily hold cash for quick access or even IDs and business cards.
I definitely wanted to include a bottle opener with my design because you just never know when you will need one! By positioning the opener at the bottom of the wallet, it provides perfect functionality when popping caps.
As the name Alumathin suggests, it had to be thin. The wallet measures in at .36 inches. By comparison, an iPhone 4 is .37 inches.
I tested prototypes for months as my everyday wallet to make sure the feel and function was everything I wanted.
After more than 6 months of design changes, prototypes & testing, I am happy to finally bring the Alumathin Wallet to Kickstarter.
MADE IN USA
I always intended to manufacture the wallet locally and support American manufacturing. This also allows me to maintain full control and assure the quality I expect is achieved. The Alumathin Wallet will be precision machined, anodized, and hand assembled in Tempe, AZ.
At this point, I have invested the time and money to reach the final working design. The Alumathin Wallet is now ready to be manufactured for sale. I need your support to make this a reality. Your pledges will help me with final tooling, material purchasing, and meeting the minimum manufacturing quantity requirements.
The manufacturer and I have laid out a plan and are prepared to handle more if the project exceeds expectations. This is a conservative timeline:
- Send out survey to backers for color choices and wait for kickstarter funds (2 weeks).
- Purchase the material needed to make the wallets and order the silicone bands (1 week).
- When materials are received we will begin machining, anodizing, and assembling the wallets (2-4 weeks depending on final quantity).
- Upon completion of the wallets, we will begin delivery to backers (1-2 weeks).
*This is a conservative estimate of the production timeline based on the time we know it takes to make a wallet. My manufacturer also has a second machine if needed. I will update backers throughout the entire process.
REWARDS & STRETCH GOALS
I want to keep things simple and offer Kickstarter supporters a special price. You can pre-order the Alumathin Wallet in your choice of silver, black, gray, gold, blue, green, purple, or red with one black or white silicone band. Free shipping within the US will be included.
If my funding goal is met, I have a number of creative stretch goals in mind that will allow for more customization options of the Alumathin Wallet.
Risks and challenges
I understand that on-time fulfillment of rewards is the most important thing to backers. By manufacturing locally in the US, I will have full control and make sure any delays are minimized. I've personally known the manufacturer for over 5 years and am confident in his experience and abilities.
I value good communication and pledge to communicate with all backers in a timely manner, throughout the entire process.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
