My name is Joey Buckingham and I'm the creator of “Brotherhood”, an original story about three boys whose fates converge while attending an all-boys boarding school. All three come with their own baggage — one is an orphan, one comes from a broken home, and one faces familial alienation due to his sexuality. The three develop a strong bond but are forced apart because of an unexpected turn of events. Through the journey of the characters, readers are confronted with the harsh realities of sexuality, racism, and mental health. This is a new series to be released early Fall of 2019.
This is my first Kickstarter and I’m excited to share this adventure with you.
The illustrations for this series are brought to life by the incredible Nenad Cviticanin (Surfacing, Fringe Science & Grief.) Nenad is a published comic book artist based out of Belgrade. He’s been active for over ten years as a comic book artist. The depth and realism that Nenad brings into his work made him a natural fit for this grounded story. His rich colors and attention to detail paint this journey in a magnificent tone.
We also have published illustrator Toben Racicot lettering the series.
Brotherhood begins during the Late-80s when our protagonist, Caleb, is sent to the fictional Geldcrest Academy. Geldcrest is an old English-style boarding for boys, located in Northern Connecticut.
Caleb is an only child. Misunderstood his entire childhood, the introverted boy is sent against his will to the boarding school as his family pushes him away because of their beliefs surrounding Caleb's sexuality.
In this dorm he meets his fellow roommates: Gavin, Jacob & Victor
Gavin is the sole survivor of an accident leaving him an orphan. Left under the spiteful care of less than close relatives, Gavin is sent to the boarding school as a punishment to atone for his parents' misdoings.
Jacob is the eldest child of two and son to an abusive father. Jacob is the strength in his home and helps keep it in order while his father is not around, mostly to protect and raise his younger brother. Jacob is removed from his father’s “care” to live in this boarding school until he is of age.
Caleb attends the school’s assembly, where he seems to find a friend in Gavin. After the assembly, Gavin and Caleb part ways momentarily and Caleb is apprehended by a group of bullies, one of which is his third roommate Victor.
Just before the boys could harm Caleb, Jacob swoops in to protect him.
