Made to Measure Modern is a project by Ivan Ilic and Tony Round - two people who are passionate about making good furniture available to all. Through this Kickstarter campaign, we're exploring how to bring simple modern furniture to a wider audience.
We're launching the first two Made to Measure Modern furniture pieces. A minimalist table, and a versatile shelving system.
The Profile Table
The Profile Table is a minimalist yet flexible addition to any room. Each piece celebrates the natural beauty of the wood it's composed of by using careful mitred joints and splined connections. The simple and functional details mean that the table has a delicate form that's a seamless transition of vertical and horizontal planes.
Variable sizing means it functions equally well as a large coffee table, end table, or even a bench. Customize the size to fit your space exactly and choose a wood that compliments your existing furnishings. Being made to measure, each Profile Table is fabricated just for you, just the way you need.
The profile table may be slim but it's very sturdy. The corner is held together using a 45 degree miter joint with a perpendicular grain spline. This detail allows the piece to support quite a bit of weight, and can even be used as a bench without the need for extra structure.
reward pricing: small, medium, large
Note that shipping to Canada is included in the reward pricing for the Profile Table!
Shelf by the Foot
Shelf by the Foot is a versatile and sturdy shelf that mounts on almost any wall surface. It's fabricated from premium plywood and uses solid wood splines for added strength. The mounting bracket is hidden, simple to install, and allows the shelf to 'float' slightly off the wall. It's based on a simple 'L' shape and the vertical surface of the shelf is structural while adding the warmth of a wood accent to any wall.
We know that not every room conforms to a catalogue size, so Shelf by the Foot is available at any size up to 48"(1220mm) in length. As with everything offered by Made to Measure Modern, each shelf is built to order. For this Kickstarter campaign, we're offering Shelf by the Foot in white oak or walnut veneers.
We worked hard to come up with a simple, invisible installation method that works in a variety of situations and also allows the shelf to be reversed. Each length of shelf includes a matching bracket that you fasten to your wall to provide a hanging point for your Shelf by the Foot. Check out the video below for more info:
reward pricing: $40/foot
A 12" long shelf would be $40, 24" long would be $80... and so on. We'll know by your pledge level how long the shelf should be (but we'll reach out to you to confirm prior to fabrication). For multiple shelves (i.e. a set of 4 for your wall) please add up the total length of shelving. We'll be sure to confirm everything with you at the end: Oak or Walnut, length, number of shelves, etc.
Note that shipping to Canada is included in the reward pricing!
Both the Profile Table and Shelf by the Foot will be shipped via ground or surface post. For shipping outside North America, please send us a message so that we can estimate your shipping costs.
We are using Kickstarter to reach a wider audience for our furniture creations. By focusing on the first two designs and launching the Profile Table and the Shelf-by-the-Foot we will be exploring what it is like to move from prototype to production. By undertaking this initial production run, we hope to build Made to Measure Modern into a well-oiled machine that sources materials, fabricates furniture, and ships to customers.
We know that Kickstarter offers the chance to learn some very valuable lessons and acquire the tools and knowledge to move beyond what we do currently. In the future we hope to expand our catalogue of useful designs and develop the Made to Measure Modern system.
In addition to selling the first-run Profile Table and Shelf by the Foot, we've created some other interesting rewards that reflect what Made to Measure Modern is all about. We're grateful to anyone willing to join us on this journey - any pledge counts!
Business Card Holder

Why are we doing this?
We started with a simple idea: making well-made furniture that’s accessible enough to become part of every day life. As architects and designers we (Ivan and Tony) consider how spaces are put together and how they work. Many things, from the large scale to the small details, come together to create a place that’s beautiful and livable. Often though, it’s that finer level of detail – the furnishings – that can be too expensive and may be given up in favour of cheap off-the-shelf items.
However, we do believe that when things are just right – a shelf fits a wall perfectly, a table is made of matching materials – a new level of richness is brought to a space. What we aim to do is build affordable furniture, but do it in a way that the materials and sizes are chosen directly by you. The core ideas that drive our thinking are:
- build well-made furniture
- use durable materials
- celebrate good design
- build each piece to order
How do we accomplish these goals?
With Made to Measure Modern, we’re creating a line of furniture that's built around simple and sturdy details. By simplifying the design of a piece of furniture so that it's only a matter of customizing the size and choosing the material, we can produce things to order, exactly how you need.

Made to Measure Modern
This is how Made to Measure Modern works:
Who we are
Ivan Ilic is passionate about architecture and design. With over 10 years’ experience working in architectural offices across Canada and the United States, he now calls Toronto and LGA Architectural Partners home. Ivan has been building things with his hands for as long as he can remember – furniture prototypes, architectural installations, presentation models, and sound objects. His attention to detail is uncompromising which is what makes his creations beautiful and unique.
Tony Round has been involved in the field of architecture and design for over 10 years. He has practised as a licensed Architect in Ontario since 2010. Recently, he teamed up with Andrea Kordos, Joe Knight and Sarah Knight to found blackLAB architects, a young but growing firm. Seeing that design fluidly connects to other circles, Tony has hands-on involvement in construction, renovation, cabinet-making, film making, and photography.

Risks and challenges
After producing a few prototypes of the Profile Table and Shelf-by-the-Foot, we're confident in our ability to fabricate the pieces to a high level of quality. However, in moving to a larger production run we see that there will inevitably be some kinks as we learn about managing the orders and refining the production to be efficient and coordinated, as well as shipping. For this reason we've set our funding goal to what we feel is a reasonable level: we don't need to make hundreds of tables for this venture to be worthwhile. Even with a limited run, we feel we'll learn some valuable lessons.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
