This is truly the first of its kind rope braiding machine kit. This complete kit will make many types or rope for an almost limitless list of applications. With a 16 bobbin machine you can make <1/32" to >3/8" (possibly larger). It is reverse engineered from an antique large scale 8 bobbin machine I bought a couple years ago. It ships flat-packed and requires assembly.

This makes an incredibly rare and unique gift. I will send out a card with a small sample rope made on the machine to announce the impending arrival to whomever you put in the shipping address field. They will get the machine in January but will have the excitement of knowing it is on the way right before Christmas.
Projects you will be able to make include:
Bracelets and Jewelry: Make truly unique bracelets of the finest materials you can find. Other decorative projects include jewelery cords, Kumihimo type chords, wraps or over-braids for headphone cords, hoodie strings with your colors!
Sailing, Fishing and Kite Lines: Many smaller control lines are possible using yarns or threads of polyester, arimid, spectra (trade name of ultra high molecular weight polyethylene) or nylon varieties. Have control lines on your boat that you made yourself that's seamanship!
Parachord: Using multiple over braids and strong Nylon 6.6 threads you can produce amazingly strong chords in any color combination.
Models: with fine thread you could make the most intricate model ship rope the world has ever seen.
Maker Ideas: Rocket chassis, fishing rod tubes, arrow tubes, pressure tubing, wiring harnesses, electromagnetic shielding, cosmetic wire control for arduino projects. Hack the machine and make it better, motorized, solar etc.
Note these projects are quick examples I am trying to spend about 20 minutes each:
My favorite rope project to date: Double braided (Kernmantle) 1/4" rope with Dyneema core (trade name for Ultra high molecular density polyethylene) and Ultra Dee (trade name) UV stabilized Polyester cover. This rope has a tensile strength of at least 800lbs., is ultra light-weight and will withstand the elements. It has a rogue's line, the single red yarn, to show maker or ownership. This line was put into rope to prevent smuggling and theft of the finest ropes from Manilla.
I am experimenting with this pretty white base that helps the machine sit flat on the table. Its a lot more manufacturing difficulty but if I can get it done in time it will be included in the kit.

If funding is successful I will give away 4 machines to the first Girl Scout and Boy Scout troops that request one.
Bobbins are based on off-the -shelf sewing machine bobbins so you can wind them at home and experiment with all types of materials. The kit comes with 8 black and 8 white prewound bobbins that can be refilled after they are empty. I will also stock some types of bobbins so you can buy prewound replacements.
I am looking for an Injection Molding partner to refer to all you makers out there when you are ready to make parts.
Future Additions: If this is successful I will almost certainly continue to design new parts to add to your machine. Some I am planning are: large capacity bobbins, power feed, power out-feed, solar rope-bot. All will be compatible with the base kit. I would also like to hear from you about what you would like to see.
There will be many small parts which can be a CHOKING HAZARD!!! be sure to keep this machine away from children under the age of 6.
If you need replacement parts I will have them available for a minimum of one year.
The video images depict multiple prototypes of the machine. Depending on the volume of orders, I may make some small changes to the way things are made and look. These are not going to be substantial and will only be done to improve the end result for you. I will probably do some updates when this happens.
Assembly: This kit takes some patience to assemble and master. As with any knitting, sewing, weaving or braiding operation you are dealing with fine materials and mechanical devices that are sometimes difficult to control. Be ready for a fun challenge! If you like building little machines, legos or any of the above fiber arts this machine is for you.
Limited Support: I just want yo give fair warning that there will be no phone support for this kit... but you wont need it! I am going to make an instructable, paper instructions and a couple short videos to help with the assembly and beginning work with the machine. I am looking into a form for users to share help with limited moderation requirements. I am a very small operation and just cannot afford to staff a phone line (phone help is so limited anyway). As an example:The Jiggernaut was a hugely successful project and continues to sell all over the world this project also has no support and no one has ever complained about it, illustrating, there will be enough supporting materials without any one-on-one support.

Risks and challenges
There are a few risks: Risks to supporters are very limited because this is not my first rodeo. I am going with a more relaxed delivery schedule than my previous projects. I have three iterations of working machines and many bobbin designs so the real challenges reside in the manufacturing process. That ultimately translates to the risk of you getting the machine on-time.
