Mixed Fruit published its first issue in April 2011, and since then we've showcased a number of talented authors and artists in our quarterly online issues. We're a group of young editors who bring a variety of aesthetics together to create a publication that really is as mixed as its name suggests.
Beginning in 2013, we'd like to publish one annual print issue to showcase the editors' favorite pieces from previous issues as well as previously unpublished material. As much as we value the internet, we all grew up winding up and down the aisles in the library and hiding under our covers at night with a book and a flashlight. Print publications offer us a tangible reading experience--something more organic, something real. They encourage us to slow down, to read without distractions. They survive--perhaps with notes in the margins and folded corners, but they survive. So this is what we hope to bring to you--a book of about 100-150 pages with a full-cover color, artwork, new fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and whatever other genres we deem worthy of your perusal. The experience of reading Mixed Fruit will become more enjoyable for you, our readers, and it will give our contributors the gift of seeing their words in ink.
To help draw in a good group of submissions for this issue, a portion of the funds from our campaign will be used as a monetary award for a fee-free contest. This means that any writer can submit a piece without paying a reading fee, and the editors will be able to reward those whose pieces we feel are strongest with a check--something that many writers never see, not when it comes to their writing. We're hoping for a $50 prize, but that will depend on you, our backers.
We've seen a lot of support from family, friends, and strangers as we've fumbled through the early stages of our magazine. Please help us produce this print issue, which we promise won't disappoint.
