About this project
We are Mivos Quartet, a New York City-based string quartet dedicated to contemporary music. In our four years together we have worked with emerging and established composers and performers from a wide variety of musical aesthetics. Developing new works is an integral part of our musical mission, and we are often able to work directly with composers during the creative process. In addition to expanding our horizons as an acoustic ensemble, we’ve been collecting a repertoire of music for string quartet and electronics and multidisciplinary works involving video and various other media. Collaboration with performers is also important to us. Mivos has joined forces with artists such as Ned Rothenberg, Timucin Sahin, Sasha Siem, and Nate Wooley.
Mivos is the only American group selected to participate at the Darmstadt International Festival for New Music in Germany, as part of their Ensemble 2012 program. This is an extraordinary opportunity to promote American music abroad; we will give the European premieres of quartets by several emerging American composers during our two weeks at Darmstadt. We will also be reading and workshopping music by young composers from around the world, and premiering a new piece written for Mivos by a Darmstadt faculty composer.
We are responsible for covering travel and lodging costs, as well as flight expenses for the cello. We are honored to be attending Darmstadt as representatives of American contemporary music, and need some extra financial support to make this musical/cultural exchange possible.
In addition to our tenure at Darmstadt, we have some other exciting projects abroad this summer. Mivos was invited to the Aldeburgh Festival in the UK, so in June we will have the opportunity to travel to England to work with the Arditti Quartet and legendary composer Helmut Lachenmann on his music. Between Aldeburgh and Darmstadt, we will be giving concerts in London, Paris, and Berlin and Düsseldorf.
Our time in Europe & Darmstadt this summer will be an incredible opportunity for us to expand our international visibility, work with new composers and colleagues, and showcase some great American new music to a broad international audience. All we need to do is raise money for travel and lodging, and we hope that you will help us out with a donation, big or small. We have a variety of appreciation gifts for at certain levels, but any amount you can contribute will help. All of your donations are tax deductible through our fiscal sponsor, Fractured Atlas. Thank you for your support!
