Marah in the Mainsail is a MPLS based, Cinematic Alt-folk band with a dynamic, dark sound, and a strong emphasis on story telling. We've been given the privilege to perform at SXSW, and countless other venues and festivals across the country over the last few years. The stage is set for a large scale, world wide release, but we need your help to make it happen.
A New Direction: We are thrilled to finally unveil what we've been working on for the last few years. Bone Crown is the next step in our sound's evolution. We've grown a lot since the release of 2015's Thaumatrope, and we can't wait to share it with all of you. Thaumatrope established the band's sound and style.
"Precise yet primitive jungle drums set the stage for the eclectic and powerful ensemble to sweep you away into their haunting world. Like oil and water, Durry's gravel voice alongside Mercedes' crystal clarity form a stirring, yet beautiful contrast. All being thrusted forword by aggressive percussion, growling base, and soaring brass."
Bone Crown is an expansion on that solid base, growing it in a heavier, more theatrical direction. Our musicianship, song writing, and production value have all grown exponentially since our last record, and linking up with Last Triumph has taken the band to the next level.
One Big Story: All of our releases have been concept album's at their core, but this time we're taking it a step further by including a novelization of the new story to accompany the album. Along with the physical printed version you'll receive 10 bonus tracks featuring Dan Smith of the band Listener, narrating the story in between each track. This is a huge undertaking, and a step away from the musical narrative we're comfortable with. But we really want to create a new listening experience, and push the boundaries of what an album can be. The lyrics and musical elements, along with the written story, all work together to paint a bigger picture. We incorporate recurring musical and lyrical themes throughout the album to portray story elements. The more you listen through the album, the more atmospheric themes and character growth you'll pick up on.
The Rise and Fall of the Dark Woods: The story follows a forest kingdom of animals that are preparing to fight off the humans invading their woods, but not everything is as it seems. The Great Fox king rallies his troops along the boarder of the Dark Woods, when a young Grizzly Bear is taken by the enemy. The All Seeing Owl's prophecy tells of a mighty wild fire that threatens the future of the forest, and time is running out.
We wanted to capture the darkness and beauty inherent in the animal kingdom, all the while telling a very human story of trust, deception, and rebellion.
Rewards: We're very excited to be printing the album on Vinyl, CD, and now Cassette Tapes too. As well as producing Posters, Shirts, Patches and kickstarter exclusive Animal Figurines.
Vinyl: We're printing a limited run of transparent red vinyl. Each vinyl record will come with a digital download of the album, and the bonus story tracks.
Cassette Tape: The Cassette tape is the only physical copy that will incorporate the bonus tracks in between each song. We'll be printing on transparent red cassette tapes, with a hard plastic case.
CD: A cardboard double pocket, wallet style sleeve, with an outward facing booklet that opens with the cover. The booklet will contain the printed version of the story, as well as the lyrics for the album and a digital download of the narrated story tracks.
Animal figurines: We're also making kickstarter exclusive, red animal figurines based on the characters in the story. Every reward $35 or more will receive one of the animal figurines. A donation of $500 or more and you get the Golden Fox King Figurine, and receive two free tickets to every show (excluding festivals) we play for the next 12 months.
Last Triumph: "Why are you kickstarting your album when you're signed to a label?" One of the reasons we decided to partner with Last Triumph is that it's anything but a normal label. Last Triumph is a small organization, with a heavy emphasis on community over profits. They provide us with a phenomenal booking and management team, and have enabled us to have complete creative freedom in their studio. They're investing heavily in our future with time and management to create a product that we are all very proud of. On top of all they do for the MPLS music community, they're also a certified B corp, (just like Kickstarter) meaning they put their environmental and community impact as their first priority. Small, heart filled, home grown music companies like Last Triumph are what will change the tide in the music industry, but none of it can happen without the support of the fans. You're in control of the future of this industry.
Stretch goals: We want to keep our kickstarter goal as low as possible, while still realistically covering the majority of the costs of production, but we have some extra ideas we'd love to follow through on.
$9000- If we raise $9000 we will host a kickstarter exclusive listening party to celebrate the album's release and thank our supporters in person.
$10,000- If we reach $10,000 we will record and release an acoustic EP with fan favorite acoustic tunes like "Lonely Boy", "Golden Age" and "Hold Steady".
The support we've received through the years is unbelievable. We cannot thank you enough for seeing us through each step of this process. Thanks to all of our fans for your continued support. Please join us once more, and be a part of this record.
Risks and challenges
Admittedly, the last kickstarter was very difficult. Every step of the process brought new challenges, and we are so thankful for our dedicated fans that stuck with us through it all. With the help of Last Triumph, we are more organized and streamlined than ever. This time around we can ensure a faster turn around, and high quality products in all of our creative avenues. Vinyl takes a while to press, but with LT's connections we'll be able to have it in a fraction of the time it took to print last time around. We have all of our reward merch lined up and ready to print.
If anything, the biggest obstacle we face right now is exposure. We're obscure, and out of the ordinary. But we know we have passionate fans that will spread the word. Come and be a part of this record with us.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
