About

WHAT IS LIGHTNING WAR ?

Lightning War is a tabletop “skirmish RPG” set in a high fantasy world's World War II. It combines the freedom and fast gameplay of a rules-light RPG with a tightly designed combat system and mission-based game sessions. Players must use creativity, strategy, and teamwork to overcome deadly scenarios created by the GM.

Think of it like a tabletop version of X-COM, with roleplaying.

THE STORY SO FAR...

The world of Lightning War is a place of powerful magic, whimsical spirits, and dangerous monsters perpetually threatened by a reincarnating Dark Lord. After centuries of peace, that ancient menace returned with an insidious new strategy. Through decades of subtle manipulation, the Dark Lord turned three of the most powerful nations of the world towards fascism and evil. Those countries declared themselves the Apex Powers – the rightful rulers of the world.

You play everyday people from the Allied Powers. It has only been a few weeks since the Apex Powers suddenly invaded your homelands, but it is already growing desperate. Anyone who can hold a weapon is being called to action. With meager equipment and only a few weeks of training, it will take all of your skill to survive.

GAME MECHANICS

In Lightning War, each player controls a team of characters: one specialist and two grunts. Think of specialists as your “main character,” but grunts provide bonuses while they are still alive. Together, all of the players’ teams make up a single squad. Your squad must work together to overcome challenging scenarios created by the GM.

The Core Mechanic. Characters in Lightning War have seven Abilities, which typically range between 2 and 7. When you make a check, you roll a “difficulty die” determined by the situation and compare it to your Ability. A trivial task may be a d4, while a difficult one is a d12. If the die result is less than or equal to your Ability, the check succeeds. Characters can automatically succeed at tasks with low difficulties if their Abilities are high enough. This simple and intuitive mechanic keeps the game moving quickly so that your table can focus on the action, not the rules.

Flashbacks. Combat in Lightning War is dangerous – grunts are killed by any amount of damage, and your specialist can be killed by a single lucky shot. However, once per session per character, there is a way you can cheat death: by revealing details of that character's backstory. The “Flashback” mechanic encourages you to give history and depth to characters who could otherwise be treated like expendable pawns.

Risks and challenges

Although I have years of experience as a game developer, this is my first time Kickstarting one of my projects. There's a lot of uncharted territory I'm having to navigate. Fortunately, I have friends and mentors in both the printing business and in the Kickstarter community I can turn to for help.
