We have a show that we're very proud of, and we're campaigning to take it to this year's Edinburgh Fringe.
Rebecca Ridout - Helena
Dereck Walker - Liberty
David Kent - Author and Composer
Susan Raasay - Director
Michael Roulston - arranger and musical supervisor
John Moysen - publicity designer
Just over a year ago, three friends met in a pub in Putney to discuss the possibility of working together on a project. Dereck Walker and the lovely Kate Batter had worked with me in panto that year, and we were keen to create something together. We came up with the basic concept for "The Next Big Thing" and I went away to write the show. Although I have written songs and stories ever since I can remember, this was my first attempt at connecting the dots and creating a proper musical.
I took the first draft of my songs to arranger Michael Roulston, and we hammered them into shape. Then both Kate and Dereck threw themselves into the project, helping me through the read-throughs, the re-writes and the workshop we held in September 2013. That was when Susan Raasay came on board: her insight as a director let to a few more tweaks and re-writes... and then suddenly we had the makings of a show.
And I dreamed of taking it to the Edinburgh Fringe.
At that point we hit our first bump in the road. We all have to follow our destiny, and Kate needed time out to listen to where life was calling her next We were sad to lose her from the production, but we're very proud of what she's doing instead (she's climbing Kilamanjaro!) .
We knew that we could never replace Kate, so we looked out for someone who would bring a completely different take on the character. We conducted some tough auditions and some even tougher call-backs, and we found the perfect candidate in Rebecca Ridout. Equally as talented, sparky and compelling as Kate, she couldn't be more different. She will bring a new energy to the show. She also just happens to be fresh out of The London School of Musical Theatre, so we'll be thrilled to be introducing her to the world.
We've got a way to go yet, but I can't wait for rehearsals to begin...
Risks and challenges
The biggest challenge we face prior to Edinburgh is making time for the director, musical director and actors to develop the piece to its full potential. The biggest challenge we face once up there is seducing people to buy tickets(!) Edinburgh is a wonderful, exciting, scary whirlwind, and we'll have to pull out all the stops to bring our show to the attention of the public.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
