BRINGING SAN FRANCISCO'S FIRST MURAL TO LIGHT
- Mission San Francisco de Asis is the oldest surviving structure in San Francisco.
- Hidden inside it is a mural painted by Ohlone Indian in 1791 under the supervision of Spanish Missionaries.
- It is San Francisco’s Oldest Mural, yet little is known about it.
- This mural has not been in public view for over 200 years.
- Ben Wood and Eric Blind rediscovered and digitally documented the mural in 2004.
- This project will transform their digital documentation into a physical public mural in the heart of the Mission District.
- The project will recreate the 18th century mural as a significant piece of Native American and California history blocks away from the original in Mission Dolores.
REVIVE HIDDEN HISTORY + BEAUTIFY THE NEIGHBORHOOD
This project is a collaboration with the Mission Community Market (MCM) on Bartlett Street. MCM is a weekly, outdoor event that celebrates the neighborhood’s diversity with fresh foods, local small businesses and youth activities. MCM's mission is to make Bartlett Street (between Mission and Valencia) a safe, beautiful, and fun public space. The Mission Dolores Mural is the perfect first step in this direction. This mural will tell San Francisco’s oldest story in a very public place, free to be seen by thousands of residents and visitors in the Mission District every day.
Where will it be painted?
85 Bartlett Street at 22nd Street in the Mission District of San Francisco, CA.
Who will paint it?
Jet Martinez, Ezra Eismont, and Bunnie Reiss. These famed local muralists from the Mission District bring individual and complementary styles and perspectives. The combination of their talents will make the recreation of the Mission Dolores Mural a brilliant piece of public art and a long-term attraction to historians, artists, and community members alike.
What will your money be used for?
$8,300 is the basic amount needed to transform the current digital documentation into a physical mural.$14,000 is the required amount to ensure a detailed and accurate recreation with high-quality material and future maintenance. This amount also will pay for the apprenticeship of Ohlone youth, a public opening ceremony with the artists and historians, and educational programming with MCM. For years this project has been voluntary. This funding will make the story of this San Francisco mural accessible to the larger public. Help us reach our ultimate goal of $14,000 to share this California treasure!
