Conceptualizing The World One Piece At A Time

Titan City is home to entire factions of heroism and villainy, but it's also home to hundreds of unique crimefighters and crooks. Let's meet a few ..."

CONCEPT: The Victor: Despite the pompous name, he is actually a very capable villain used to getting his way. Will you be the one to break his winning streak?

CONCEPT: Wayang: The subject of unspeakably horrifying experiments, mad scientists transformed what was once a man into an empty shell, a mere shadow of a man. Devoid of anything but rage, now it is just a weapon to be pointed wherever the man with the controller wants...

CONCEPT: Dr. Tyche: Roboticist, engineer, mastermind, madman. The doctor's mechanical skills are matched only by his insanity.

CONCEPT: "A miracle of engineering and a symbol of hope, the statue gracing Phoenix Plaza continues to inspire the people of Titan City."

CONCEPT: "As a major American metropolis, Titan City is crisscrossed mass transit lines ranging from highways to canals to monorail to elevated commuter trains."

CONCEPT: “A subway system links the southern districts of Titan City. Some stations, like this one, are bright and shiny. Others, in poorer districts, are dark and unnerving. But what lurks in the tunnels beneath them?"

CONCEPT: Apokalyptykult has recorded dozens of multi-platinum hits. Renowned for their driving basslines and moody lyrics, they've taken Titan City's music scene by storm, often literally. People wonder what dark secret they harbor... they insist there's nothing secret about it.

CONCEPT: "In Titan City, even the morning commute can be a thrill! When mad science unleashes its latest warped breakthrough, heroes race to the battle from all over the city, alerted by TCPD and TCFD emergency broadcasts."

Either The Victor is a joke Villain or we are pushing CO levels of cheese. The rest look pretty cool though.

I've already seen the concept art for Dr. Tyche, but I still love the design so much. Both retro and futuristic, both badass and codger. I can't wait! :)

That Victor fellow screams WRESTLER, BROTHER.

I like the Phoenix statue but I think it would be better without the world globe in the middle. It made sense in Atlas Park with Atlas holding the world but I just don't see the need here. Besides that, the Phoenix Statue is awesome.

    8. Scott Corpany on

Hmm, maybe putting that in the actually active general comment thread instead of the thread just for this update would be a better idea. Anyway, thanks for the sweet art! Keep rockin'!

    9. Scott Corpany on

So is there a public Project Forum or any other place the would-be RPers of this game can jam on character and supergroup ideas? In particular, I'm curious how other people are planning to interpret the end of Paragon City and the Rogue Isles for those of our characters that are straight-up refugees, since an "official" answer in the game is obviously problematic.

I'd just brainstorm here in the comments thread, but I find picking out the relevant conversation thread from all comments too obnoxious to deal with.

another thing about the phoenix statue... i see a globe in the background that was made for dancin =)

Is there a way to contact someone with regard to a hero that we would like to make? Just to see if it may indeed be possible (or in the future plausible) to make...and maybe inspire a dev to go "hmm, this could work well."

Craig's comment brings up the thought of all the different ways that CoT can be tied back to City of Heroes, in this case the mental image of a cutscene in a mission where the leader of the villains in a mission is having a conversation with someone shadowed, who can't be seen clearly and is never identified, talking with the villain leader about 'not letting a simple Apocalypse interfere with long-term goals', and then making his exit... and all the player can see for certain about the shadowed figure is that they're wearing a Napoleonic-style blue uniform with lots of brass ornaments...

You know what really sells Doctor Tyche's look? The horseshoe magnet on his gauntlet. Don't get me wrong, the rest of the outfit is super retro-goofy, but the magnet just screams "Comic Book Mad Science".

I'm not sure about the fountain aspect of the phoenix statue (assuming I'm seeing that correctly); water flowing over a phoenix just doesn't seem quite right. Maybe it's backlit with red and gold lights?

      @MrPendent: Heh. I had a Sonic/Rad corruptor named Apocalypso.

    17. Mr Pendent on

As others have said--soooo much to love here. Kirby crackle, Apokalyptakult (which reminds me of the musical version of Mel Gibson's movie about Mayans I have been meaning to make: "Apacalypso!"), The Victor, the rampaging robot...

Best of all is the hero in the foreground of the Phoenix statue who obviously loves his city very much. <3

    18. Michael Prieto on

Wow. Apokalyptykult. I am SPEECHLESS. PERFECT. Has me laughing already. Inspired by Metalocalypse? I hope so. But the name is EVEN BETTER. I WANT WANT WANT this!!!

    19. Tessachan of Phoenix Rising on

Ok, you are aiming DIRECTLY at me when you mentioned Apokalyptykult, admit it! (It's true, I'm of two minds when I consider my fascination with Dethklok©...) I think Dr. Grrlfriend is going to be very mixed up about this.

    20. Percy Hodge on

I like the fact that the mass transit system isn't all the same.
Having stations that match the tone of the area they are in (Monorail vs. reg Train vs. Subway) is a vast improvement in "mood setting".

    21. Garth Thompson on

Looks nice. I hope these costume pieces are unlockable by killing these NPCs.

    22. DaWolv on

I heard the Atlas Park theme song when I saw Phoenix Plaza :)

    23. Ben Overmyer on

Cool observation about the Phoenix statue - there's a bunch of supers hanging out on top of various parts of it.

The artist who drew that obviously played and loves City of Heroes.

    24. Craig E Ransom on

Awesome look and feel. I'm going to feel right at home in COT!

@Neil Sandison "Dr. Tyche: I knew it was all a Nemesis plot!" NCSoft was a Nemesis plot!

I just -love- The Victors look.

Just from looking at the costume you're able to guess how his personality will be and to me that's the definition of a perfect costume. Thumbs up!

I see only ten pips on Dr. Tyche's belt, but I'll bet it goes up to 11.

very cool, love the 50's sci-fi look for dr. tyche, the phoenix statue looks awesome, can't wait to get grimy in the subway and sewers (who doesn't love sewers?), and the apokalyptikult looks like they'd be great for an SG battle royale =). all the concepts so far have been fantastic.

    33. Matthew B Sestak on

Wow, about 2/3 of the way through the e-mail of this update (before loading images), I realized that I was really getting the feel of the old bits of lore in Atlas Park and CoH in general. :)

Wow, I'm seriously floored with this concept. Awesome job so far. And I agree, the Phoenix statue looks amazing. That would def inspire me to save people even more.

Oh man, The Victor is awesome. Can't wait to thwart some o' dat! The Pheonix statue looks beautiful! And Dr. Tyche is so rad! Hope I can wield a staff like that in game.

I REALLY like the direction this is going. Pardon me for saying, but to me it looks like a great middleground between the seriousness of CoX and the silliness of Champions.
