Hi there! I’m Alyssa Weaver, author and illustrator of the children’s book, Elliot’s Adventure in Canterbury, a delightful and adventurous story for young children set in the historic city of Canterbury, England.
This Kickstarter is a means to fund the printing and publishing of Elliot’s Adventure in Canterbury so children, young and old, can enjoy this fun tale! I am so excited to bring this fun little book to life! Keep reading to learn more about the book.
In the book, we follow a toddler named Elliot, and his friends, on an epic adventure all around the city of Canterbury; from having a picnic beside the River Stour, doing acrobatics in Toddler's Cove playground, and climbing to the top of the Dane John Mound to spot Canterbury Cathedral!
Elliot and his friends face very loud lions and aren't scared at all! Then they visit The Beaney House of Art and Knowledge and become inspired to paint their own masterpieces. The adventure doesn’t stop there, but you’ll have to wait for the book to read the rest!
Children will love reading the simply structured sentences to find out what Elliot and his friends are up to on each page, as well as learn the names of some of the historic landmarks of Canterbury. The story also shows how fun it is to use imagination, as Elliot dreams up fantastic scenarios, such as imagining a dragon soaring over Canterbury Cathedral!
All artwork, character illustration, and Photoshop editing is done by me. The focus is on the character design, while the background scenes are simple, colourful depictions of places around Canterbury.
The book will be printed from a UK-based printing agency as a saddle stitched softcover book, sized 210x210mm (About 8x8 in), 18 pages, in full colour.
The cover will be a satisfyingly sturdy 350gsm gloss coated, and the inside pages will be 350gsm silk coated. This will give the book a nice, hefty feel.
With your help, I can fund this project! I have a lot to budget for, and have done a ton of research to get this book printed affordably, without losing quality. You will help fund the following budgeted items:

THE BACKGROUND IMAGES
The background scenes are depicted in broad, messy, strokes of paint and charcoal sketches. This messy paint method reminded me of my toddler's finger painting and made the entire book feel as if each adventure was imagined directly from a young child's mind.
CREATING THE SCENES
Once I had painted the backgrounds and characters, I pieced them together to get a feel for how each two page spread would look. I chose to keep the cut-and-paste feel that was achieved by placing the cut-out characters with a border of white space around them onto the background. I love the handmade, scrapbook-like quality this method produced.
I had never illustrated an entire book before, and I started out quite overwhelmed! I'm a graphic designer, all computer programs and clicks of the mouse. I have only ever drawn for fun, and these days most of my 'work' is helping my son finger paint! The thought of drawing storybook characters and having a consistent style was daunting. I knew I wanted--and needed-- to find a simple style that I could realistically draw over and over again, that also felt appropriate for the intended audience--small children. What inspired me to choose the style I did was how easily the characters could be broken down into shapes. It's a great way to break down complex images to show children that drawing isn't so hard.
DIGITIZING AND EDITING THE SCENES
I then scanned all the individual images onto my computer, added small changes, arranged the characters, and created a 'final' layout in Adobe Photoshop.
I am a graphic designer, adventurer, and coffee lover from Texas. My husband, Taylor, and son, Elliot live in Canterbury, England, tucked cosily into a terrace house with our three legged cat, Sabre. We enjoy picking apples from the apple tree in our back garden, roaring like dinosaurs, and finding new adventures within the historic city walls of Canterbury!
Our family fell in love with Canterbury and wanted to remember the first year with our son in this beautiful city. This story was inspired by my one year old son and the joy he has brought to our lives. Through him, we get to go on a new adventure every day and see the world in a new way; through the eyes of a fun-loving, smiley and energetic toddler.
From the idyllic cobbled streets to the grand historic architecture, this book celebrates so many parts of Canterbury that we love, and know you and your children will love, too!
What makes this book even more special is not only are the scenes set in real life areas of Canterbury, but the story characters are based on some of the wonderful babies and toddlers we have met! Elliot has made some special lifelong friends in this beautiful city, some of whom are represented in this book.

Risks and challenges
Our time in Canterbury is coming to an end soon. I am highly motivated to finish this book BEFORE we leave. It will be a nice way to end the five years we have spent here.
However, we simply won't be able to print this book if the Kickstarter fails. Maybe in the future, but as of now, we are totally reliant on having this project funded through you.
We have found a UK-based printer with a fast turnaround. Easy! As soon as the Kickstarter is funded I will make a final check through everything, purchase the ISBN, and send the book to the printer as soon as possible!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
