Introducing The Misen Nonstick Pan
The Misen Nonstick Pan is, in our humble opinion, the best value in nonstick. It performs better than nonstick pans that cost over $130, at a fraction of the price. No gimmicks. No BS marketing claims. Just premium, long-lasting performance at an honest price.
We love nonstick pans for cooking eggs and delicate foods, but they have always been a frustrating purchase for us. Because the truth is that ALL nonstick pans eventually stop working and start sticking when the coating wears off. There’s no magic fix for this.
People basically have two options: buy cheap nonstick pans that may last a few months or years at most, or expensive ones that may last a bit longer, but will still need to be replaced. Both options seemed pretty bad. So we decided to create something better.
Our goal was simple. Create an insanely long-lasting and durable nonstick pan, and sell it for a price that’s fair and affordable. We think we nailed it.
So how is it that we can make a nonstick pan that performs better than expensive ones which cost well over $100, and sell it for a fraction of that price? Simple. By cutting out traditional retail middlemen and selling directly to you online, we’re able to offer incredible quality, at wholesale pricing
People often ask how long nonstick pans last, and the true answer is "it depends." The lifespan of a nonstick pan is not just related to the quality of the nonstick coating, but also to how frequently it's used and how it's cared for.
What IS much clearer, is knowing when you need to replace your nonstick pan. Scratches. Sticking. Flakes. Hotspots. If your nonstick pan has any of these, it's time for an upgrade.
The Misen Nonstick System is made of two key parts: an industry leading, PFOA-Free Nonstick Coating, and an innovative Plasma Primer. Both elements work together to form a Nonstick System that is absurdly durable, and provides long-lasting performance.
A good analogy for how nonstick coatings are applied is painting a wall. While the quality of the paint/coating and number of layers used matters, so too does does the primer, or how the wall/pan is prepared for accepting the paint/coating. This primer layer is a crucial and often overlooked element in making great nonstick.
Rather than using a traditional 'grit blasting' primer method, for the Misen Pan we decided to use an innovative Plasma Primer. Infused with Titanium, the Plasma Primer Layer is 2.5 times more effective than the traditional primers, and extends the hardness and abrasion resistance of nonstick coatings.
Plasma Primer: How We Tested
Admittedly, we were skeptical when we heard about the very buzzword-y "Plasma Primer." There are so many BS nonstick claims ("it'll last forever!") and infomercials, and we thought the Plasma Primer might be another gimmick. But after research, it seemed the the Plasma Primer was legit, and we wanted to test it out.
With the help of a low-profile shaking machine, we performed a series of forced abrasion tests meant to simulate long-term wear. We tested the Misen Nonstick Pan against many other nonstick pans without a Plasma Primer: Cheap Pans, Expensive Pans, and even Ceramic Pans. The Misen Nonstick Pan outperformed all of them.
In addition to the Plasma Primer, the second and equally important part of the Misen Nonstick System is...the nonstick coating itself! To again use a painting analogy, the quality of the paint/coating itself, and the number of coats/layers applied affect performance.
For our pan, we use Dupont's premier 3-Layer Platinum coating, modified to work even better with our Plasma Primer. This PFOA-Free coating is Dupont's most scratch and abrasion resistant nonstick finish, and is even designed to withstand normal metal utensils and abrasive scouring pads.
We know safety is a major concern with nonstick pans, and dislike how many brands omit information about their nonstick, like what coating they use. We want you to be as informed as possible about the tools you're using to cook for yourself, your family, and your friends. To answer a common question of "is nonstick safe?", the short answer is yes. PTFE cookware is safe to cook with, but you should avoid very high temperatures. For more information and specifics, check out our FAQ.
For the base of our nonstick pan we used a 4.2 millimeter thick, commercial-grade aluminum construction. This thick base ensures a flat, even cooking surface for the life of your pan, and helps provide amazing heat distribution for better cooked foods.
On the bottom of our pan, we bonded a stainless steel plate to ensure it's compatible with any heat source. Gas, induction, electric - they all work.
A Quick Rant! Many brands claim their nonstick pans are 100% dishwasher safe, and that you can use metal utensils on them. This is terrible advice! While doing either once in a while won't kill your pan, over time they wear your nonstick pan down faster. Don't do it!
It’s important your pan feels comfortable and balanced while in use. The Misen Nonstick Pan has a cast stainless steel handle, riveted to the base for a strong, reliable connection that will last. The pan also features a removable stay-cool silicone grip with a textured underside for incredible comfort and control.
The design process will always be at the heart of Misen. Lovingly obsessing over every single consideration of a product is pure joy for us, and it was no different this time around. After countless sketches, prototypes, testing, and an unholy amount of eggs cooked (the smell...), we knew we had a nonstick pan that was truly special.
Risks and challenges
This is our third Kickstarter Campaign, and with each successive project we've launched, we've made a point to be farther along in development and ready for production. All of our product tooling is finished, and we're ready (and excited) to start production.
The biggest risk, as always, is timing. While we've included a healthy margin of safety in our delivery estimates, unforeseen events can and often do pop up. While we can't control when these events happen, we can and will promise to communicate transparently and frequently with you. That's part of the fun of being a part of Kickstarter campaign, and it's what you deserve!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
