What is the C.24?
The C.24 is a two octave wireless music keyboard designed for iPad. The ultra portable C.24 transforms from a protective cover into a piano-style keyboard at the touch of a spring-loaded latch.
The use of anti-polarity magnets creates the semi-weighted feel of the keyboard. By using magnets instead of traditional springs reliability and longevity are extended.
Each key press is sensed by an infrared emitter detector pair providing real time analog position data. Optical key tracking technology delivers MIDI velocity, monophonic aftertouch as well as detailed performance capabilities.
Just above the keyboard is the capacitive ribbon controller. The ribbon extends across the width of the keyboard and is divided into two regions, each with 32 embedded LEDs for visual feedback. The left region is configured to function as eight buttons, by default assigned to shift the keyboard’s octave assignment. The right region is designed for analog expression such as pitch bend.

Our team designed an open standard for hardware expansion modules.Tactile controls such as knobs, faders and XY pads will be available in the future. This allows you to configure your C.24 based on your performance requirements. Third parties have already started work on innovative modules.
Communication and compatibility
The C.24 communicates to the iPad via Bluetooth Low Energy. We developed an open standard for CoreMIDI over Bluetooth. This technology can be used by any developer to transmit and receive MIDI wirelessly to compatible iOS devices.
Miselu’s KEY application makes it possible to use Bluetooth devices to make music. KEY allows you to assign your keyboard’s output to any CoreMIDI compatible iOS application. You can also save presets, allowing you to quickly change your setup during a performance.
Who we are
San Francisco based Miselu develops music interfaces and instruments to enrich the experience of creating music with the iPad. The team led by Yoshinari Yoshikawa and Jory Bell, builds products with a strong design aesthetic, utilizing modern technology in bold new ways to enhance musical expression.
Why we need your help
We are a small company trying to bring a new type of product to market in a competitive consumer electronics space. While we are confident in our ability to engineer a high quality music interface and ramp it into volume manufacturing, you are the ultimate arbiter of whether this product is worth bringing into the world.A successful Kickstarter campaign will allow us to
- fund production tooling (injection molding, sheet metal stamping, etc.)
- purchase materials in larger quantities (at lower costs)
Producing abroad is never an easy undertaking as details can easily be missed, engineers have to spend weeks at the production facility and iterations are harder to implement. That is why we decided to assemble at least the first 1,000 units in-house. The things engineers learn and notice by assembling a large number of units themselves are crucial and lead to the iterative process that refines manufacturing to the best possible state. This is something that could never be achieved this well or quickly if manufacturing and assembling is outsourced. We believe this is the best way to guarantee that everything will work the way intended and -- at the same time -- get ready for mass production much faster.
We are currently evaluating production partners in China, Malaysia and the United States. Individual team members have long standing relationship with production partners and a combined production experience of over 100 years at companies such as Apple, OQO, Yamaha, Palm, HP, Heartland Robotics.

Risks and challenges
Miselu has a passionate and experienced team; having designed and shipped numerous products at both large organizations and scrappy startups including Apple, OQO, HP, Palm, MIT, Yamaha, and Native Instruments.
At this point we have built several iterations of working prototypes of the C.24 keyboard accessory and extensively tested all of its key technologies. We have longstanding relationships with our manufacturing partners and the product is explicitly DFM (designed for manufacture). in addition to our engineering expertise we have knowledgeable employees specifically dedicated to managing our supply chain.
At the same time, our team's century+ of accumulated experience allows us to know that unexpected challenges will invariably crop up and that one or more of these could negatively impact our shipping schedule:
* many of our custom parts will initially be sole sourced which is always a risk
* tooling issues could arise with particular parts
* natural (or manmade) disasters could impact our supply chain
* extended reliability and environmental testing could require design changes
certifications (FCC, TUV, UL, etc.) could take longer than expected and/or require design changes
* dialing in and stabilizing a cosmetic process (anodizing or laser etching) could take longer than expected
