About

Play the Demo Here!

(Click Play for in-browser, or download for PC or Mac)

Miscreation is a game about evolution. You start with a basic creature, which will evolve through dozens of forms — some good, some bad. As you play, you’ll find hundreds of different parts, which can be put together in any combination. See a monster you like? Try to become it. Prefer that monster with spider legs and a pitcher plant mouth? You can do that, too.

So many choices!
So many choices!

This game was inspired by a SNES classic, E.V.O.: The Search for Eden. Even today, E.V.O. is still a beloved classic, played by speedrunners and nostalgic 80s kids. It also helped inspire Spore designer Will Wright. But its core idea — evolving the player creature by swapping out body parts one at a time — was never used by another game. Our aim is to change that!

  • A unique evolve system to build your own creature
  • Try out body parts like a scorpion tail, a geoduck head, elephant's trunk, or eagle's wings!
  • Negotiate tricky levels by picking and choosing parts
This would be so much easier if you had wings.
This would be so much easier if you had wings.

The core of Miscreation is an animation system that allows every part in the game to connect: head, mouth, arms, legs, tail, wings (or back armor), ears, horns and the torso. Think biological Lego!

Get yourself a tail, for starters!
Get yourself a tail, for starters!

You start off as a blob. You don’t have much — in fact, you don’t even have legs. So maybe you should find some!

What about some stranger combinations? Maybe you have three legs — or eight!

And that’s just legs. What if you had a tail? A head? A set of wings, perhaps?

Not all parts are created equal. Miscreation is a classic platformer, with a dash of Metroidvania: you progress in the game by finding stronger and better parts, or just parts with a unique capability. If you need to get past a huge monster, you could evolve to have a huge mouth to attack -- or evolve wings and fly over it. Or you could evolve a scorpion tail to lob poisonous shots from far away.

How will you proceed?
How will you proceed?

It’s up to you to decide how to play. Do you want to be small and fast, or lumbering and powerful? Or do you want the optimal creature, powerful at everything? You can try — just keep in mind that there’s an element of randomness to evolves!

Ooohh that's a big bite!
Ooohh that's a big bite!

Developing Miscreation's core system has taken a large portion of our time to date. The good news is that the animation system is complete. Now, we just need your help to polish the way players evolve, and finish creating the art, music and levels.

The world of Miscreation takes place in grand Yggdrasil, the world tree. It is here that new life is born. And so does your journey — as a significantly less grand blob of yellow protoplasm.

"Hail, seedling! We are the Norns, caretaker of this great tree."
"Hail, seedling! We are the Norns, caretaker of this great tree."

You first encounter the Norns: three wise and ancient goddess. They will help you find your next form.

To do so, you need to find Essences, distilled information from various creatures. Each Essence you acquire gives access to new parts. As you start your journey, Essences can be found dangling in the sky, beneath the outer roots of Yggdrasil, and guarded by the legendary squirrel, Ratatoskr.

Time for some egg-hunting!
Time for some egg-hunting!

Win all three of these and you can begin climbing the tree as a new, evolved creature.

Oddball creatures. Nearly limitless customizability. We’ve made a game out of it — now we want to offer the same thing to our backers!

  •  $2 Thank you! -Your name will appear in the credits.
  •  $10 The Game - Get a copy of the game for Windows or Mac (Steam, Itch.io or GOG). If possible, we will also release on platforms such as Linux and Nintendo Switch.
  •  $20 Alpha Access - Take part in playing Miscreation before anyone else! We'll release a beta version of the game for testing and feedback several months before full launch.
  •  $40 Community Creatures - For all remaining creatures in the game, we will take community votes on what to make. For instance, we'll need to choose between creatures like a warthog or woolly mammoth. (Or, if you prefer, a carnivorous mammoth...)
  •  $100 Create A Creature - Design your own creature from scratch. The sky is the limit! You can do this however you like: sketch it, describe it, or have us give you a custom quiz to determine your dream creature :) Backers at this level (and their creature) will be specially named in the credits.
  •  $200 Creature Plushie - Have your personal creature brought to life as a 6-inch tall plushie! Our resident artist Yldenfrei loves to sew. So for the highest reward tiers, Yldenfrei will bring your creature to life as a plushie, shipped to your door ^_^.
  •  $500 The Mega Plushie! - Get a JUMBO sized (18 inches tall) plushie version of your personal creature! Backers at this level will also be invited to take part in design planning and approval of the final creature list.

Two out of our three team members do this as a full time job. So the first and foremost use for Kickstarter funds will go to keeping us properly fed, which is always nice. Kickstarter funds will also allow us to spend additional time on the project.

A portion of the funding will also be used for professional sound and music contractors.

We're a group of friends with passion for game development. We have worked on various contracts as well as self-published projects. Our last title was Reverie, a bite-sized, artistic exploration game.

Risks and challenges

As a team that has been working together for several years, we are certain of our ability to ship a product. We've published games on PC and mobile, and worked on multiple outsourced development projects. Further, the core idea of Miscreation — the ability to construct creatures out of disparate parts — isn’t just an idea. It’s already built and in use in our demo, with multiple rounds of bug-fixing and tweaks completed. Since the evolutions are the most complex part of our project, we feel that the remaining technical work and level design should be fairly smooth sailing.

The true risk for Miscreation is that we have few role models to work from. E.V.O. was published in 1992 — 26 years have passed since without a similar game. To do homage to the original while maintaining modern game design sensibilities, we've built our own systems from the ground up. Since we’re not copying any other game in existence, we haven’t had any guidelines to follow on the design.

To make sure that these systems are super fun, we ask for the help of our Kickstarter backers. We need your ideas and feedback to make Miscreation great!

    Community Creatures

The creatures of Miscreation play a vital role in the game: their parts (legs, arms, heads, etc) are used in your evolutions. We still need to create 20+ more creatures, and to choose exactly what to make, we'll rely on community support. Want a cute woolly mammoth? A unicorn? You can vote and choose!
