AT A GLANCE
ALHAMDU is a musically driven, avant-garde short film about Muslim Futurism- what it could look like in a vibrant and joyous future where Muslims exist unapologetically. With a female-majority veteran team from the film industry, ALHAMDU is already halfway done after completing principal filming on the West Coast. We are looking to crowdfund the cost of principal filming on the East Coast, as well as post-production. The project is led by MIPSTERZ, a non-profit creative collective that amplifies marginalized creators through film, music, and illustration for the broad audiences ready to hear them.
While the final video will be accessible to all on YouTube, ALHAMDU campaign rewards are exclusive to Kickstarter backers.
COLOR. MUSIC. MUSLIM FUTURISM.
You may not acknowledge our past, but you will know our future.
What does an American Muslim future look like? Who gets to decide? Who gets included?
We are taking Muslim Futurism, Afrofuturism, and other liberationist ideas, from the spaces of academia and constructing a world where we tell our own stories. A future where Third Culture is the dominant wave, where Muslims exist loudly alongside each other in their found-families. Join us on this surreal, fashion-heavy, and multi-chromatic journey featuring both dynamic portraits and soft emotional stills. This is a bright America that exists tomorrow, shared today. Show the audience that they should have been paying attention all along.
Texture differentiates the scenes and color tells the story. From the different locations: the Californian desert and grasslands, the concrete jungle of New York; to the exaggerated fashionable aesthetic: street fashion meets your grandma’s closet, old world thobes and flowing hijabs, loud turbans and kufis, clashing patterns, obnoxious colors. Finding the wrong puzzle piece for the right fit.
"Alhamdu" is the Arabic term for "Praise be", Alhamdullilah being an expression of relief, joy, exasperation, etc to Muslims everywhere.
The soundtrack of the video is an original song featuring sounds and words from new Muslim artists. Produced by our very own, Yusuf Siddiquee, “Alhamdu” is best described as an alternative, third-culture hip hop sonic experience. Much like its creators, the song samples a previous generation and remixes it with the poetics of now. A classic Egyptian wedding song is looped and layered with live tabla and darbuka from percussionist extraordinaire Neel Agrawal. LA boom-bap rapper Haseeb the Few reminds us of days before the ‘gram, NYC emcee Ahmed El-Naggar ruminates on third-culture kids stuck between worlds, all while an Oakland chorus of voices led by Emily Afton shouts “Alhamdulillah” at the top of their lungs.
Alhamdulillah, we are out here and unapologetically ourselves.
TIMELINE AND BUDGET BREAKDOWN
Crowdfunding goals are set up based off of costs involved in the 3 stages it takes to create and distribute the work: Pre-Production, Production, and Post-Production. They encapsulate everything from location scouting, to paying make-up artists and gear rentals the day of shooting, to film festival fees.
Costs for production of backer rewards, shipping and fulfillment, and Kickstarter transaction fees have also been accounted for.
We are crowdfunding for the same reason we are making ALHAMDU: to be able to tell our own narratives. Crowdfunding is the best way to ensure that the talent and production team- both in front of and behind the camera- have full control over their story, are paid for their efforts, credited accordingly, and ensuring the work is produced and shared in a timely manner.

EXECUTIVE PRODUCER ROLE + CREDIT
MIPSTERZ is about presenting + producing. MIPSTERZ is a curated space for an emerging generation of Muslim creatives, enabling and amplifying our collective voice in the larger public space through film, music, and illustration. We are a creative collective recognizing the power in the minority voice and the broad audiences excited to hear them.
MIPSTERZ is a home for marginalized creators to build, collaborate, or experiment with diverse folks who share a common connection to a larger tradition. Besides creating original work, we run live events, actively provide mentorship, resources, and carve out positive creative spaces. We have worked with everyone from the popular media, academia, to museums and art spaces to bring our multi-dimensional third-culture inspired voices and stories to the forefront.
Risks and challenges
Every film has its own set of unique challenges. While we have a dedicated team of experienced producers, cinematographers, directors, etc we are still shooting outdoors and in several different locations, each with their own set of variables out of our control. Our current funding goal gives us a small buffer in the event we have to extend our shoot days, so that production can continue no matter what is thrown at us.
We own the rights to our music, our footage, and all liability and consent waivers have been signed by those involved in the production.
Pins, Totes, and prints are all work regularly produced, sold, and shipped by MIPSTERZ and the artists they support, having done a successful pin kickstarter in the past as well. Our team is well within our comfort zone.
Reward fulfillment is being done by White Squirrel, the service behind some of your favorite illustrators and kickstarters. They are detail oriented, professional, and incredibly easy to communicate with, ready to tackle any potential shipping issues- both domestic and international!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
