The demo takes about 20 minutes to complete, and features half of the intro. Best played with headphones, in a dark room!
"There's nothing outside The Village except the trees, the dark, and the monster."
The young fallow Sage has lived in The Village their entire life, it's all they've ever known. The dirt and cobble streets, rickety wooden homes, small community, and... the monster. They never know when it will come, when it will attack their walls, or take one of their own. Any fallow that goes missing is sure to never be heard of again, to never return.
When Sage is pushed outside the wall by their own mother, for reasons unknown to them, they have to learn to survive in a world full of the unknown, and the monster.
Twisted will be the third visual novel from Fablesoft Studios! Visual Novels combine character images, backgrounds, sound effects, and more, to present a narrative experience that allows you to make choices to choose your character's direction, and ultimately their ending.
Our other projects include:
We're also part of the team that made Heartbaked, a deliciously sweet VN made for nanoreno.
We're no strangers to visual novel development, but this is our first foray into the commercial. Twisted is a small visual novel that we've been lovingly working on for over a year now. We want to create a fantastical, frightening world for readers to dive into, and offer an intriguing story with several branching pathways that lead to a variety of endings.
This Kickstarter will help us raise money to pay for a composer, and voice actors, but Fablesoft is creating a significant amount of Twisted in-house, including all writing and art assets. The sound design is being done with commercial free sound effects.
We have a lot done, but we're not home free yet. The sprites still need to be polished up with final versions, although the designs have been finalized. We decided not to put a limit on the amount of backgrounds and CGs, because we want Twisted to be a very atmospheric experience, so as we program and edit we choose places we feel need the art.
So far, including variations, there are 19 backgrounds.
There are 6 CGs in the demo, and at least 12 more planned for the full game, though that number will likely go up.
The writing for Twisted is complete at around 33,000 words, but we still have a significant amount of editing to do. We've met two of our stretch goals! Now we can add extra scenes to further develop the world, and give the characters time to grow closer...
- Play the part of Sage, change their pronoun, and discover the secrets of the woods outside the village.
- Two widely branching pathways full of twists and turns.
- The complex pathways means we have 10 endings for you to play through!
- Unlockable content!
- 6 CGs in the demo alone! An undetermined amount for the rest of the game, but there will be a lot! We want this to be an almost storybook experience.
- All original sprite art, backgrounds, and UI.
We're in the process of redrawing the sprites! Check the updates for WIPs. We now have just one left to go!
The above chart depicts how funds will be allocated should we reach our stretch goals. Money will go towards outsourcing first (composer, VAs), and then towards fulfilling rewards (making keychains, shipping, etc). While it says 10% goes to writing and art, a majority of the money will be put towards the above two items. Fablesoft Studios will be compensated if there are funds left after we've finished paying everyone else.
Risks and challenges
This project will eventually be completed regardless of whether we can get it fully funded. Our goal with this kickstarter is to make the game as immersive and polished as possible by providing features we need to outsource for, such as an original soundtrack, and voice acting. Each goal in between is just our way of saying thank you to our backers for having faith in our project.
What we're most worried about is being able to advertise well enough to get Twisted enough exposure to the people who'd be interested in playing. We're going to do our best to make this campaign successful.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
