About this project
Update #2: Rewards, Plus Five-Minute Pilot Episode (discusses the discrepancies between the Rewards and Project Description)
"This pain," he whispered, "is beautiful. My body will now reflect my mind in all its complexities and you will finally understand me.”
'Allo and welcome! I would like to introduce you to my series of dark fantasy short films entitled Gloom, which was inspired by a decade of illustrations and other forms of artwork I did during my previous years spent at the Savannah College of Art and Design.
First and foremost, this is a labor of love. Gloom has been and continues to be my major passion; a written and graphical work of surreal creatures, locations, and persons with an ever increasingly interwoven storyline. I would like to create a five-minute pilot episode to capture the world's imagination and, if this project is successful, move on to create various short films based on my written novellas.
What separates Gloom from other written novellas is that I am also a freelance artist, illustrator, and fledgling animator. I have been drawing doodles and illustrations since I was a very small child. With these various strengths, I am able to portray my visions in more than just my writing. I would like to create a five-minute pilot episode for Gloom so that people may watch and enjoy it. With that said, the art will be entirely created inside Blender (an open-source 3-D content creation suite) and GIMP (the GNU Image Manipulation Program) using high-definition textures (diffuse, normal, and specular maps) to detail the diverse digital models of locations and persons. So, why Blender? Simple. I love open-source and I love the Blender community. As a fellow Blender user said, "it is the mindset of sharing and building a community around [Blender]. That is what makes [it] the best software, because it does not need a salesman. It does not have customers; it has followers and fans." I fully agree. Blender has a support group like none other and, as for the program, it is absolutely spiffy. The same goes for GIMP; another open-source program with a capacity that is comparable to more expensive image compositing and authoring programs. With the most recent release, there have been many new developments with GIMP and, like Blender, the GIMP community is equally helpful and personable.
What started as simple doodles based off of my dreams quickly began to evolve into what would eventually be entitled Gloom, which has been an ever-present idea that began to take root in my freshmen year of high school. I am now twenty-seven-years-old and my style of illustration has progressed since then, carrying with it more nuance, but the themes have essentially stayed the same. Now, I am transferring that art style into a 3-D narrative. Please join me for the ride!
Did you know that the rewards increase appreciably with your donation? Well, they do. Would you like a limited edition postcard mailed directly to your doorstep? I can do that. Do you want your very own copy of the Gloom visual preview? It is practically on its way. Or, is it your ultimate desire to be a part of the creative process for Gloom? Maybe, if you are awesome enough. Also, if you give the largest pledge amount you will be the supreme god of Gloom swag! When you support my project, not only are you making it possible for me to make my wonderful series of dark fantasy novellas and a two-minute visual preview, but you are also getting splendiferous rewards. Did you know that “splendiferous” is an actual word? Look it up and be amazed.
Remember, Kickstarter operates on an all-or-nothing funding model where projects must be fully funded or no money changes hands. If I reach my funding goal on Kickstarter, it will allow me to fulfill the essential development costs. Below is a list of what that money will go towards:
- High-Performance Computer Desktop, ~$2,000
- Marketing, Rewards, & Web Hosting, ~$1,000
- Original Music by Sandy Lavallart (of Kwoon), ~€500
- Wacom Intuos5 Touch Small Pen Tablet, ~$230
- Wacom Wireless Accessory Kit, ~$40
If I raise more than my goal of $3,900, that would assist production even more and help me create an even better experience for you to enjoy! I want to offer you an experience that you are going to love. Below is a list of what any excess money will go towards:
- Better Marketing, to help reach more people
- Donations, to other Kickstarter projects
- "Making Of" Documentary
- More Updates & Content
If you are unable to make a pledge, thank you for visiting my Kickstarter project and for taking the time to read it all the way through to the end. You are instrumental in getting the word out about my series of dark fantasy novellas to all of your dapper friends that may also take an interest in my project. I hope that you will follow me on Facebook and continue to check my website for updates.
To all of those who have made a pledge, my appreciation knows no bounds. You are helping me achieve one of my creative dreams in a way that would otherwise not be possible. I hope you enjoy your rewards and, more importantly, Gloom.
Furthermore, if you are of the Twitter persuasion and want to let the world know of Gloom, use the hash tag #GloomTheNovellas and be sure to let me know about it. I would do a little happy dance to know that you are mentioning my series of dark fantasy novellas in your tweets.
Risks and challenges
What are the risks involved? As an artist, I am constantly questioning my talents and abilities. I have been an artist for quite some time, but not as long as some others. I am still young and I am always learning new things to better convey the little pictures inside my head. I will continue to work on a particular piece until I feel it is fit to represent my entire portfolio. Granted, on Kickstarter, you are getting a sneak-peak behind the curtains of my current works-in-progress, but I hope that you can envision the final product. I want every image to portray darkness and beauty.
What is the major challenge for this project? It all comes down to having enough time to launch my product on schedule. I want everyone to receive their rewards in a timely manor. Because this is such a large project for just one person, I have set the date for December 2013. It is a little bit of a wait, but not too long. Plus, if I raise more money than is necessary, I will create "Making Of" documentaries along the way, which I will then post on Vimeo and YouTube to make the wait a little less tedious.
What qualifies me to overcome these obstacles? To put it simply: I believe I can accomplish my goal if given the proper equipment. My passion for this project goes far and beyond any other project I have ever worked on. I have been plugging away at these concepts since I was 14-years-old, and I am now nearing 28. My ideas have blossomed and matured over the years. It has become an all-encompassing affair. I see it as my task to share the world of "Gloom" with all those around me. I hope you will join me!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
