What in the heck is a Mini Opener?
The Mini Opener is a bottle opener that was designed to open those tiny liquor bottles, or airplane bottles as some people call them. It can also pry off beer bottle caps and pop the tabs on aluminum cans as well.
I came up with the idea when my daughter, who is a Flight Attendant, was telling me how hard it is to open the tiny liquor bottles that they serve on the airplane. Some of them are so hard to open that people try all sorts of barbaric things to get them open, like biting the caps off, bashing it into the wall of the airplane, cutting them or some people just throw them away when they can't open them.
The problem is that the caps are so small that in order to get a good grip, you have to squeeze your hands really tight and try to twist to break the seal. The force required to break the cap's seal and the awkward twisting end up causing a lot of discomfort in the hands, arms and even tension in the neck.
We did a lot of research about proper body mechanics and repetitive strain injuries. It was alarming to learn how badly your body is affected by opening these bottles. Ask any Flight Attendant who has been in the business a while and they can just show you their hands to prove what damage this repetitive opening can cause. We've seen all sorts of ailments that make opening these bottles difficult. Things such as arthritis, carpal tunnel, tendonitis, eczema and average grip strength make this common task a struggle.
We knew we had to find a solution to this problem, and that's where the Mini Opener was born.
Who can use a Mini Opener?
EVERYONE, The Mini Opener was originally designed for my daughter who is a flight attendant and opens mini liquor bottles, beer bottles and soda cans every day at work.
If you have trouble prying up soda can tabs or finding a tool to pry off a bottle cap and especially if you ever have to open those small caps on those mini liquor bottles, then the Mini Opener is for you.
The Mini Opener makes a great gift. Flight Attendants have been struggling for years with opening these bottles. Buy one for the flight attendant in your life, or just be selfish and buy one for yourself!!!
We Need Your Help
We have created a unique tool that solves an all too common problem that hasn't been addressed by the current bottle openers out on the market. The Mini Opener truely makes opening mini liquor bottles easier and can really save some wear and tear on your hands. We need your backings so that we can manufacture these openers and get them in the hands of everyone who needs one.
Keeping it Local
From the beginning, we knew we wanted to create a product that is high quality, durable, efficient and made locally. Of course we could have it made overseas for less money so we could gain more profit, but that’s not how we roll! We want to provide the best product to our customers and we want to provide jobs for the local economy. That's why Mini Opener is MADE in the USA
All of the prototypes were made by hand of recycled aluminum. You will also be happy to know that if for some crazy reason you wanted to throw your Mini Opener away…..its 100%recyclable. We don't recommend throwing away such a prized possession. The Mini Opener will be made with recycled Aluminum/Zinc and the manufacturer even recycles their own waste water from the cooling process, so nothing gets dumped into the storm drains!!!
What will we do with the kickstarter money?
Take the money and run…. Just kidding, that’s a Steve Miller Band song, not our business plan. With the kickstarter money we will purchase our Die Cast from a local foundry along with the 3D model. We will also pay for our initial bulk order of Mini Openers as well as the Kickstarter and Amazon fees. Then we will ship your openers to you!!!!!!!! All of the pictures and videos of the Mini Opener are of prototypes that were made by hand.
But $20,000 is a lot of money....
Believe me, we know it’s a lot of money. Plan A is to use $20,000 of our own money and the money from the Kickstarter backings to purchase the die cast, trim die, 3D model and the first production run of Mini Openers, which we will be shipping to you, hopefully 4-6 weeks after we get fully funded on Kickstarter. Any remaining openers we will be selling on our website, www.MiniOpener.com
If we don’t get funded on Kickstarter we will have to resort to Plan B. What does Plan B look like? Well it looks like I will have to make the Mini Openers one at a time by hand. Here's the catch; It takes about 10 hours of physical labor to make a Mini Opener by hand.
Needless to say, we like Plan A better.
What stage is the opener at now?
We have come a long way. The first model of the Mini Opener was actually shaped like a fish.
My daughter used this opener at work for awhile and other flight attendants wanted to know where she got the Mini Opener. After that we knew how popular it was becoming and decided to make a new opener shaped like a propeller that would appeal to those in the airline industry. The new designed allowed the blades to be used to open soda can tabs too.
After my daughter used this newest model of Mini Opener she thought it would be even better if we could somehow redesign it to open beer bottles too. So back to the work bench I went to redesign the Mini Opener. I added two hooks on the opener to be used to open the pry top beer bottle caps. We beta tested this model and it worked so well that it became the final prototype that will be die cast and manufactured for use.
The model shown in the pictures above as well as in the video is the final prototype. It is currently with the manufacture in Oregon getting the final measurements taken before our die cast mold will be made.
We have been granted our design patent by the U.S. patent office and we just recently received our utility patent as well. Woo Hoo!!!!! It was hard work but well worth it!
It looks heavy, what is it made of?
The Mini Opener will be made of a recycled Aluminum/Zinc mixture. Depending on the reward you choose, the finish of the opener will be a shiny chrome finish (Nickel), metallic black finish (Copper nickel), or the shiny Gold colored finish(brass nickel). It is about 4 inches long. It fits perfectly in the palm of your hand.
It weighs about 4 ounces, or about the same as 2 slices of bread, 2 golf balls, 8 pencils, or 3 extra large sized eggs.
After getting fully funded by our incredible backers, we will go right to work!!!
Week 1-2 Wait for payment to be processed and issued, Send out surverys to backers
Week 3 Money issued, Mini Opener order placed
Week 4-5 Mini Opener production complete and delivered to us, we begin packaging them and shipping the rewards out to you!!!!!!
Risks and challenges
We've been working hard on this project for the past two and a half years. Along the way we have done a lot of research to determine the best production path to render the most reliable, high quality bottle opener to get the job done.
We've toured a lot of foundries in search of the right one to produce our Mini Opener with the best of quality and keeping things local is important to us so we have chosen a foundry near Portland, Oregon.
We've made some changes to our design since the original prototype was made and we have come up with a final prototype that will go into production. We've beta tested it and love the results.
We've done a lot of the tough work and planning ahead of time so that when we are ready to start production, we anticipate an accurate timeline and hopefully smooth sailing from production to the shipment of rewards to our loyal backers. We anticipate having your Mini Openers shipped to you in at the end of June.....hopefully sooner.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
If you would like an additional Mini Opener, simply add $20 to your pledge and we will double your order.
Thankfully the TSA does not prohibit propellers on airplanes. The Mini Opener does not have any sharp edges or points and is not considered a weapon. The TSA prohibits the following:
Because Kickstarter prohibits offering more than 1 opener at a time in the rewards, we have to come up with a back door way to get you more than 1 opener.
As stated above, if you want us to double your order, just add $20 to your existing pledge amount.
But if you want the Trio of colors, (3 openers total, 1 of each color) Just pledge $70 and choose the $24 reward.
