TerraScapes: Hextiles is a 3d-printable modular flat terrain system for tabletop games of any genre! They are the every terrain!
This project will only be funded if it reaches its goal by Sat, May 25 2019 1:00 AM UTC +00:00.
TerraScapes: Hextiles, STL's for 3D-Printing!
TerraScapes: Hextiles is a 3d-printable modular flat terrain system for tabletop games of any genre! They are designed to provide the ground cover and open environment you desire most for your game. Bringing the Hextile concept to 3d-Printers was intuitive for me. Those of us who love this type of terrain know that Hextiles bring a level of modularity proportional to the number differing tiles! At the launch of this project, I have already designed, printed and tested 75 different modular hex tiles for this project! To offer so many options as anything but a 3D-Printable resource would be an exhausting enterprise for me to say the least!
I designed TerraScapes: Hextiles with the Hobbyist in mind! I wanted a flat terrain that I could modify to my heart's content. Hextiles can be whatever terrain you hobby it to be (yeah its a verb now..) You are only limited by your imagination! I am a hobbyist through and through. If you follow my work, you know that I often share my exploration into the hobby on my Facebook page and on my Youtube, MiniGrinder Studio. I've already shared my layer algorithms for painting each of these following examples! I am happy to dig deeper and take it even further and make more tutorials for hobbifying the elusive Hextile!
Hextiles with Hex Grids!
All the new Hextiles we've unlocked, I have been modeling them with the Hex grids in mind. As this would have happened anyways before the next campaign, I've decided to include Hex Grids in with this campaign! All reward zip files will have both versions Hextiles; i.e. with and without a Hex Grid. From flat to flat, the Hex Grid space is 1.25 inches. The Hextile can easily be scaled down squarely to 4.8 inches on it's longest axis from the default 6 inches. This will create a Hex grid space of 1 inch from flat to flat.
Variety is the Spice of Tabletop Life!
My goal is to release over 100 distinctly different 3D-Printable Hextiles in this project alone! I want to stress that after this campaign, all future Hextiles packs added to these Base sets will always be free and only at the cost of another download of their parent Base Set! There is so many more Hextile concepts just itching to escape my head. So even if we don't reach those stretch goals, I will bring those concepts to future campaigns. If those concepts fall under the Hobby Base Set, Pebble Base Set or if it is unlocked, the Stony Base Set then Backer's of those rewards will get a first look at those Beta-products at no further cost or pledge! TerraScapes: Hextiles is a new IP, but its potential I feel is extraordinary! I will need an army of fellow hobbyists to help me beta test these concepts while the rest catch up. It will be amazing to see what you all do with this versatile set of terrain!
Free Commercial Printing License to all Backers!
It's hard to build a hobbyist empire without some incentives! How about this for an incentive. Owners of any MGStudio digital products may print and sell any resulting physical 3D prints freely! No license necessary! I want to see Hextiles on as many tabletops as possible. Roadblocks which prolong that must be eradicated!
Whats in the Pledge Rewards
All pledge rewards will provide the Backer with a means of downloading the STL files for their chosen rewards. There are 2 different Base Sets available at the launch of this campaign. The first Base set is what I have been referring to as the Hobby Set. This basic set has no other details by design, giving the hobbyist a blank canvas in which to hobbify it! The Pebble Set already has small and large pebble details added to the tiles. While they do share a similar modular configuration, they are in fact different Hextiles altogether! This helps break up the monotony and helps up GM's simulate more realistic open environments! The last set, if unlocked is referred to as the Stony Set. Like the Pebble Set, it too is different than the other sets while retaining similar modular configurations. In addition to pebble details, these tiles will also boast some larger Stony natural structures! If the entire Stony Base Set is NOT unlocked at the close of this campaign, then the All-In pledges will receive every unlocked Stony Pack unlocked.
There is no pledge level for individual packs. I will be fulfilling these rewards myself on my website. This is my first digital rewards campaign, and I want to insure fulfillment is as simplified as possible!

the Hextile Design Philosophy
All the examples pictured in this campaign were printed at a .16mm layer height unless otherwise specified. I designed them to be as flat as possible to minimize their cost in materials and print time. These examples took an average 6 hours to print per 6 inch tile. While that may seem like a lot. It didn't take long before I was swimming in Hextiles! It's interesting to note that the topology generated on the surface of the Hextiles can also be adjusted. With the proper settings you can print the same tile with a .08mm layer height in nearly the same amount of time using an adaptive layering option in your slicer. So the same tile can appear more rocky at larger layer heights, and softer with smaller layer heights!
As you can see, the underside of a Hextile is also designed to save some time on your print bed, while keeping the tile rigid. Due to these spaces it suggested that they be printed with supports. While this does add some time to the print, it provides a nice flat and light profile.
One issue I've always had with hexagonal terrains is their tendency to slip out of place as you build your layout. The slots on each side were added to guide the hobbyist in placing 2mmx2mm rare earth magnets. This may sound like a ton of work, but I can personally attest how satisfying this is to hear them click together effortlessly. I even discovered that magnetizing them allows for the Hextile to be raised and propped up while keeping its connection to its neighboring Hextiles! i.e. Gentle rolling hills!! I realize many of you are going to want a more conventional and widely used locking system and I am not opposed to looking into this down the road. However, at this time I would prefer to keep the it simple!
I'm approaching this project with the mindset that I want natural looking terrain. If I were to only have one set, then the layout would look artificial and unnatural due to duplicate tiles. While it is possible to paint them up differently, I'd rather just have a similar tile on hand that was slightly different. This is a brute force way of simulating nature! More tiles equals a more natural look! The following image is a comparison between the Hobby and Pebble Set's Bridge packs. At first glance they look identical. That is because they share the same modular configuration! Look again. There are only so many ways in which the modular configuration can be arranged and each Pack has a the maximum amount. It's their contours which vary, and the added details.
If I've got your attention, take a moment to head over to my website and download my FREE Sample pack and check these things out!
Once the campaign closes, head on over to the above link and download the Sample Pack if you haven't already. When doing so, create an account with my store. This account will be used to direct you to your Fulfillment rewards once funds are received. If you already have an account with my store, simply reply to survey email sent to you after the campaign with which options you prefer for your rewards. I will not be able to fulfill your rewards if I don't receive a reply from your Survey email and if you don't have an account with my online store! After funds are received and when the files are ready, I will process your requests in order of when you backed this campaign! You will then receive an email with a code to use at checkout rewards!
It is my hopes that all stretch goals will be completed and fulfilled within 1 month of receiving funds. I am responsible for all art and modeling on this project so this is totally up to me. It is my aim to model all stretch goals on the fly during the campaign so that they are ready immediately!

I'd like to thank ALL the backers for their consideration, enduring support and love. John Popson for helping me navigate zbrush and limiting the number of headaches I've received on this project. Thanks to Reaper Miniatures for their continued support of my work, and for letting me use their miniatures in the marketing materials. Lastly, I'd like to thank everyone involved in making those little plastic aquarium plants that I cut up, glued back together, primed and re-painted! My Fungal Forest and Hextiles would be naked and chilly without you all.
Risks and challenges
There are very little risks to this project. 75 tiles and other pieces have already been sculpted, printed and most are even "test" painted! I plan on sculpting and test printing all unlocked stretch goals on the fly during the Kickstarter Campaign. I will also be fulfilling the STL files through my own website. My only real concern is if this project is wildly successful as I will have to process a lot more emails after the campaign closes. I will fulfill the rewards from this campaign in June of 2019!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
